A port of the successfully crowdfunded Sega Mega Drive / Genesis title, Xeno Crisis is an arena shooter that can be played solo or in local co-op mode. Take control of battle-hardened marines embarking on a deadly mission to confront an alien menace and get home alive! Run and gun your way through thousands of adversaries as you explore the devastated research outpost, searching for survivors, and ultimately facing the origin of the outpost's demise.

Outpost 88 is divided into seven distinct areas, each being randomly generated with each play, meaning that your strategy must evolve on the fly if you're to succeed in your mission. Collect dog-tags from vanquished enemies to upgrade your equipment between areas and look out for special weapons which will give you a momentary advantage.

There are several weapons at your disposal, each with their own characteristics. Although your standard issue pulse rifle is perfectly capable of taking on the enemy, other weapons can give you advantages in certain situations, so picking them up is generally advisable - just don't run out of ammo!

As you progress through the colony you will come across many different enemies, each with their own traits and means of attack. Many of them can be gunned down without too much thought, but others will require the player to outflank them, attack them within a certain time window, or be avoided altogether!

At the end of each area you will be given the chance to exchange any dog-tags you've collected for upgrades ranging from extra health to weapon power-ups to extra continues. Which upgrades you go for will depend on your style of play.

* A faithful port of the hit 16 bit game with added extras.

* Incredible pixel art from the legendary pixel artist, Henk Nieborg.

* Intense FM chiptune soundtrack by Savaged Regime, originally created for the YM2612!

* Two difficulty levels and three modes of play.

* Seven varied areas to traverse.

* Many different enemies to tackle.

* An arsenal of 10 weapons to master.

* Upgrade system allows you to change your tactics each playthrough.

* Play solo or local co-op with a friend! (2 player requires at least one controller)

Just your typical retro twin stick shooter. Looks good, sounds good, plays good. Not much else to say really. Controls are tight that the game is challenging but fair. In addition to that, you can play co-op, so that's a plus. If you like your old school shooters, maybe get it on sale.

Unfair, unbalance, cheap, idiotic, and borderline un-fun. This game is purposely too hard and too crushing in any way to enjoy. Even if one can say "well the fun is in the challenge", no absolutely not. There is fun in challenge and then there is cheap hits, bizarre game play decisions, unreasonable requests for a good end game, ineffective upgrades, and countless design choices that will always make you feel you could virtually do NOTHING to do prevent. On top of asking for the world, the game insists on continuing to climb in difficulty. There is no way I can recommend this to anyone. If you get pleasure from this game, good for you. However, investing any time into this game could be spent better, I'd rather sit through a documentary on watching paint dry and STILL feel I spent my time better than this game has given, AND I doubt throughout all this work to a good end the game could and would ever deliver.

Pros ----------------------------- 1. Amazing Music 2. Upgrade System Between Stages 3. Stages 1-3 are great. Cons ------------------------------ 1. Stages 4-7 are in the wrong order as far as difficulty is concerned. 2. Starting from Stage 4 onward enemies can spawn directly underneath you with no warning causing cheap hits or worse death leading to restarting or being unable to finish the game. 3. Dodge. It's extremely unsafe and if by accident you double tap it the animation stops completely leaving you standing there like an idiot taking damage. 4. Stage 7 Shield Enemies. Only way to break the shield is with a lucky weapon drop, wasting a grenade or using the games extremely risky dodge ability. Dodge directly into the shield will break it but sometimes you still take damage anyway or bounce off directly into the bullet just fired at you. 5. Life System. The game gives you 3 lives to use which sounds great. If you use any of them you get the bad ending which isn't a bad thing on its own. The only reason this is an issue is because the game gives you the bad ending before the final boss fight. So if you use a life for any reason anywhere you can't finish the game. Tips ---------------------------- 1. Not every dropped weapon is worth using at the moment they spawn. Some of them will screw you over more than help you. Make sure you remember the discard key or suffer. 2. Upgrade firepower to max after the 1st stage. Seriously everything takes way too long to die otherwise. After that its up to you.

I want to love this game but I just can’t. I’ve put 8 hrs into this and have had some fun but I’ve come to the realization that the game is incredibly unfair. I was expecting a very difficult game that the more I played the better I would get. That’s true to an extent but when enemies constantly spawn right underneath you it doesn’t matter how good you are. Most times I lose heath is due this and I don’t understand why this hasn’t been fixed. I feel like I can’t progress anymore because of it so I’ve wasted 8 hrs playing it. Very disappointed in this game.

Awesome isometric shooter in the style of Robotron and Smash TV. Guns feel satisfying, sound effects give tons of impact, and the music is amazing. If you enjoy fast paced skill based shooters give this one a go you won't regret it. If there's one issue I have and it's an incredibly minor one it's that your character slides a little after you stop moving which can make precise dodging a bit trickier compared to other games in this style but once you get used to it it's not too bad. Edit:The movement issue seems to be a problem with my PS4 controller. Was avoiding projectiles with ease while playing the Sega Genesis version a bit.

Growing up with a Sega Genesis I had 3 favorite games. Ghouls and Ghosts, Lightening Force (TFIV), and Altered Beast. Now entering the ring 25 years later the new King in Genesis action titles... Xeno Crisis! First off, I love all things twinstick shooter. It's the one genre that never fails to get my adrenaline pumping. Robotron was the first I remember playing as a kid and it had a large impact on me. Moving onto 16-bit consoles the only game I remember being twinstick was Smash TV on SNES. It was an amazing experience for the time as well. Now, with that said I just want to reaffirm that we are indeed seeing a new Sega Genesis title released before our very eyes and it is indeed twinstick! The pixel art, animations, sfx, music, and gameplay are absolutely amazing considering the hardware limitations faced by the devs. XC ends up playing like a combination of Smash TV, Total Carnage, and Alien Syndrome albeit much faster paced and with a sleight bit of procedural generation mixed in to keep things fresh.. I haven't made it too far into the game yet but from what I've played thus far this is a straight up diamond buried in the trash bin we know as Steam. Absolutely adore this game and what it represents. An amazing job by the devs! Well worth the wait and admission cost.

The controller support on this game is absolutely fucked. * My Xbox 360 pads refused to work past the menus. Two of them, wired and wireless. The only Xbox 360 pad that worked consistently was the emulated one built into the GPD Win 2. * The DualShock 4 isn't detected well enough. The triggers on it (important for dodging) don't get set off unless you push the trigger all the way in, meaning split second dodging is almost impossible. * The Switch Pro Controller, despite being part of a platform supported by the devs, isn't picked up at all unless you turn on Steam Input, and even then the default button controls are off to the point where you can't play with the buttons to shoot since they go in random directions. This is literally the only strike I have against Xeno Crisis. It's a high-speed, great memoir to the games of old like Smash TV. The enemies are interesting, the bonus weapons pack a great punch, most of the things you can do and upgrade are always useful (except melee due to it's horrific range, at least it makes up for that by being 2x the score) and the overall difficulty is tough but fair, even after 3 hours I still haven't managed to beat the game's seven stages, and I want to keep trying. Shame there's no online co-op, but at least this game supports Remote Play Together. Highly recommended if you want something to scratch that Smash TV itch.

This game is just a perfect arcade game like the good old ones: fast, a bit hard but not frustrating, with a nice music, perfect sound effetcs and with an amazing pixel art. Do you know when you remember a nice 16-bit game or an arcade and then you play it and it sucks because it's just old? Xeno crisis is on the opposite, you remeber it was cool and IT IS COOL. I just love it, bought without waiting a sale, I'm ABSOLUTELY soddisfied. I've readed about problems with Xbox joypad, didn't have any at all. Plays smooth and all right with my 360 wireless pad.

I really want to be able to play this game because it looks great, but for anyone who has played Binding of Isaac, the keyboard controls are switched, meaning WASD shoots and the arrow keys are for movement. It's like playing the piano that's got the tangents in reverse order. There's no way to edit the controls in-game either, except for a pop up window you can spawn when launching the game - BUT - the input menu there is so confusing and unintuitive that nothing I've tried has worked so far. Therefore I'm forced to leave a negative review and ask for a refund, and when an easier way to configure the controls comes along, I'll try it out again.

I really wanted to like this game as i LOVED smash tv back in the day. But for some weird reason the controls are backwards. you move with the arrow keys and shoot with WASD. its so counter intuitive and for some weird af reason you cant re bind the keys. I don know who thought that this would be a good idea? So unless they release a patch to bind keys my thumb will stay down.

At first this game will kick your ass ruthlessly and without any trace of mercy. But then you keep coming back, start learning how it works and gets better and better. But that won't do any good, because the game will keep kicking your ass like if all your effort at becoming better was actually nothing. So it's almost as if the game was life itself: no matter how good you think you are at it, it will still kick your ass savagely. Great game, recommend it.

Let no one tell you otherwise, Xeno Crisis is a difficult game, and I mean that in the traditional sense. It's also one that grows increasingly addictive as you start to build up steam. For the uninitiated, Xeno Crisis is a Smash TV-style twin stick shooter with a Genesis-styled aesthetic and designs that would be right at home in Contra, Alien Storm, and many other alien-centric games of the 16-bit era. Likewise, it has a difficulty comparable to games like Contra, in the sense that your reflexes and situational awareness will define your results, and it can be pretty unrelenting at times. That being said, having played predominantly on the 'Easy' setting and a little bit of 'Hard' (and the difference between the modes is very noticeable), I've had an absolute ball so far with this game. It's a game that I find myself increasingly motivated to have 'just one more run', to try to get that bit further. From what I can see, the level arrangement is semi-fixed, but it does appear that the game has some variables in terms of what spawns in any given room, adding to replayability, and I've certainly had a range of surprises in successive runs. I've read to complete a full run, but that hasn't killed my motivation to try again in the slightest. The fantastic soundtrack and visual design (including some delightfully grotesque bosses) further solidifies Xeno Crisis' package, and if you're looking for a traditional twin-stick shooter that's easy to pick up and play, but challenging to master, this game will serve you well.

    Apr 27, 2020

while i wholeheartedly recommend the game to both old school and new comers to the twin-stick shooter genre of arcade games I only have one gripe with this game in particular that i'll get to in a moment. If you like SmashTV, you'll feel right at home here. If you like the hardcore action of Contra, you'll appreciate this game as well. This game does a great job replicating the nostalgia of inserting Quarters (or tokens) into your favorite Arcade machine and kicking your ass to try and steal your money. Gameplay is quick, smooth, action packed and unforgiving as you shoot, dodge and melee your way through hordes of enemies that "come out of the god-damned walls" while navigating a maze-like stage that's randomized every time you play it to keep each play-through fresh and new. After each stage you can purchase upgrades for your character so you can better combat the alien enemy and if you get a "game over" and run out of continues you lose everything and have to start over from square 1. As i said, game's unforgiving and wants your quarters. While i love the high difficulty and fast paced action of the game my one and only problem is the ammo system they have in it. While it's normal to play games where weapon pickups and upgrades have limited ammo like in "Metal Slug" it bothers me that your primary weapon runs out of ammo as well. Usually like in some older games you can run out of ammo for your primary gun and end up swapping to a lesser, weaker gun like a pistol with a lower rate of fire but sporting infinite ammo so you have a way to defend yourself, but in this game that's not happening. if your gun goes click, you get dick. Once your primary is empty you're left with your melee attack until you pick up more ammo. Usually ammo drops when your gun had about 25% ammo left, but if you're going to provide ammo for me when my gun's running low, why not just give me infinite ammo? or better yet if you wanted to simulate a reload, why not just have a reload function? It just kinda breaks the flow of combat sometimes and just adds another obstacle to an already difficult game full of them. I've tried playing on "Easy" mode to see if this gives an "infinite ammo" perk to your primary gun, but no, Easy mode does no such thing. dare i say "Easy" mode is probably just as hard as "Hard" mode only with somewhat less enemies thrown at you. Maybe i'm missing something, or maybe i just need to learn how to dodge better, but regardless it's still a fun game to play. just wish they'd change that one "feature" regarding ammo. besides that, I definitely recommend the game to fans of old-school arcade games.

Great game. Even better when you get to use a Genesis controller.

The fantastic soundtrack and visual design (including some delightfully grotesque bosses) further solidifies Xeno Crisis' package, and if you're looking for a traditional twin-stick shooter that's easy to pick up and play, but challenging to master, this game will serve you well.

while i wholeheartedly recommend the game to both old school and new comers to the twin-stick shooter genre of arcade games I only have one gripe with this game in particular that i'll get to in a moment.
