Splatter blood across the land through four massive zones, each with their own unique environments, characters, and secrets. Use satisfying and versatile sword techniques to shred enemies to pieces. You take the role of a downtrodden swordsman of a nearly extinct race known as the birdmen. Years of training and battle leave you unfulfilled and without purpose, so one day, you leave home to discover the fate of your lost childhood love. Your quest for perspective is abruptly cut short when you are shot from the sky by a group of human warriors who specialize in trapping birdmen for use as slaves.

You wake up with your wings clipped and sword confiscated, in a land ruled by a sadistic king who posesses a strange obsession with harvesting the mysterious "red seeds". You come to realize that the fate of the one you've been searching for is intertwined with the king's nefarious ambitions. In order to meet her again, you must get your hands on a sword, escape enslavement, and carve a path of blood to the ominous Spire City.

The weak fear you, and the strong want you to fail. To keep moving towards your goals requires an infallible attitude, but what if you go too far? The pursuit of strength can take its toll on a man's soul, and at the end of it all, will you still be capable of happiness, and love?

This is a story of perserverence. Hope has evaporated from the land. Even those who do not directly oppose you will cast doubt upon your intentions... but with every opponent mercilessly cut down, your will hardens and the voices of doubt grow more faint.

Great little game, it can be difficult If you don't play many games, but for experienced gamers I think this one is good when you don't know what to play and have some time for yourself. Also, there is nothing on this game on the internet, if you want to get all the achievements there is a guide I made that you can check out that at least tells you a thing or two about the game. 4 dollar for this little gem? worth it.

The game is excellent so far. Things I like: -Very smooth movement. The jump, wall climb and glide mechanics are pretty well done! -Great combat. Really fast combos combined with the movement and special attacks make the combat fun -Cool bosses -Really fun Storyline -Awesome MUSIC! Lastly, the one thing I will say about this game is that is is very challenging. I got stuck a couple of times trying to figure out where to go at the beginning and what to do. Be sure to have your explorer hat on and talk to the characters hanging around for help!

Definitely give this game a shot. It's got just the right amount of difficulty for this type of game, and the combat is extremely fun. You'll want to play it all the way through at least a couple times, as the game just gives you that feeling of "I did it, but I can do better!"

I did enjoy the game. It was good. The controls are very smooth and responsive (I used an Xbox 360 controller), which is important since you will be doing a lot of precise platforming that was quite entertaining as well due to the glide and climb mechanics. The combat is alright. You have the option to learn useful special moves from tutors located in the world that were a bit challenging to find sometimes. The boss fights are probably the most entertaining parts of the game since the bosses are all unique and have some pretty cool moves. They can be a bit challenging sometimes, especially the main boss. I enjoyed the difficulty, it would have been pretty boring if you could just walk over the bosses like they were nothing. The story is not very deep but that was not what I was looking for in this game anyway. I have found 2 endings, there might be more that I'm not aware of. The reason I don't 100% want to recommend this game right now is because of its price. 8 euros for 6 hours of content is not enough for me. I beat the game two times, where the first time took a bit over 4 hours, and collected all the achievements. I would have preferred more content in the form of special moves, zones, story and bosses. My experience was enjoyable, just not worth its current price in my opinion. Verdict: Buy during sale

The game does not give the best first impression. It first launched in a really tiny window, it doesn't explain it's controls or mechanics very well, and the opening 30 minutes might be some of the most boring in gaming history. However, things make a dramatic change for the better and I can confidently say that WotR is well worth the asking price (+) Tight platforming. Fast, challenging combat (+) Excellent music (+) Great sense of progression (+) Art direction (-) Very slow start (-) Progression requirements can be too vague at times (-) Blocky character sprites sometimes blend into background https://youtu.be/M1qpQPslEJw
Highly Recommended Combat Platformer
Way of the Red is a simple pixel action platformer, with heavy combat and exploration elements. It is very easy to pick up and play, and the level design is spot on. The character is nimble, so it makes the fights fair to fight. This was a wonderful experience. The gameplay was superbly tuned, music was amazing, story was gripping. It was short and left me wanting more, but at the same time it was the perfect size. Several different ways to play lead to subtly (or not-so-subtly) different endings. Heartily recommended!

Amazing game. The combat is what I enjoyed most. The bosses where really well made and the few patterns they had made them difficult but fun to fight. Same with the enemies that usually had 1-2 types of attacks. You could really see the smart design choices the developer made. The music was awesome, specially the song that played in the cave. I´ve always dreamed of a fast paced platformer when you use primarly melee combat. This game was a dream come true! The death animation of the player is kinda lame. There were some stressfull parts where I couldn´t make some jumps, and stuck on them for a long time(specially on the king's tower). Fighting golems felt boring and tedius except when they where fought alongside crows, which made it interesting having to juggle between stomping golems and killing crows. Otherwise fighting golems slowed down the game and was not fun imo. This game is a 7/10. The unreachable platforms didn´t feel like my fault for not reaching them. Having to retry the same jump about 50 times really ruined the hype to meet the final boss for me. Besides that and the lack of game feel this game would be perfect. This was the most fun I've had playing a game in years, I wish I knew more games like this.

I don't normally write reviews for games, but then I saw how few reviews this game had after I finished it. It seemed wrong given how much I enjoyed Way of the Red. This game is exactly what I was looking for, and I hope it receives more notoriety. The controls are excellent. It really feels good to play this game. I really appreciate that the developers took the time to get this right. I've played more than a few indie games that looks really nice, but when I actually start playing, they just feel off. It is an absolute pleasure to be able to hop quickly from one narrow platform to another and stick the landing without having to "adjust" to the game's controls or physics. Combat feels good as well. The way you are able to string together combos and kills is very flashy and satisfying. Way of the Red is shorter than the standard metroidvania platformer. Honestly, I look on this as a pro. I think the game is priced well for the experience I got from it. I don't always want to play an 80 hour epic (in fact, I want that less and less as I get older). I got a satisfying experience that I actually want to revist in the future. I didn't find every power-up, and I look forward to my next playthrough so I can find more. There is one thing missing from the game: credits. I want to know who the creators are so I can follow thier future work. Of course, I can look on the steam page to see who it is, but this is an excellent game. You should feel proud to put your name on it. I hope to see more from you in the future.

The best metroidvania I've played since Symphony of the Night. Control is fantastic and very fluid. Story and world is short, but very interesting.

Overall, given the cost, this is pretty worth it. It's fairly short, and there's really just one part that gave me some significant annoyance. There's a "challenge" you can do at one of the first villages and due to the controls being just a little flimpy at times it can be kinda maddening. Sometimes if you hit jump again too soon before hitting the ground, or even right as you hit the ground, you won't jump. Sometimes you'll land and hit the D-pad but won't turn. If you hit jump again near the ground before quite landing you'll "glide" for a split second and that seems to wonk up your ability to swing. Similarly, some state transitions, such as gliding to landing and whatnot, kinda muck up your ability to attack in weird ways. I also don't particularly like that one button is jump as well as wall-grab as well as glide while in air.. BUT despite these nitpicks, none of them were a real source of frustration during the normal gameplay, it was just the challenge that it really stood out. With that out of the way, the music and aesthetic are solid. The story is cute, I kinda got into the little bit of the world we got to see and wanted to run about sword-chopping all the jerk enemies and it was generally pretty satisfying doing so. There seems to be a couple endings based on a pretty obvious set of choices throughout the game, and there was a good bit of platforming, fighting, a decent variety of enemies, etc. - it all kinda came together nicely for the duration that the game lasts for. For an afternoon or evening of fun it's worth a couple bucks, in my opinion, if you like the aesthetic and want to see a birdman through his quest for revenge and (ideally) the freedom of his people.

This game was hella good times. It's a little bit on the short side, but what it has is finely crafted and controls smooth as butter. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone fond of games like Symphony of the Night or Mega Man Zero. 9/10

    Dec 17, 2017

Controls are a little stiffer than I anticipated but this game is really fun. It's a little slow to start but once you get all your main attacks unlocked (it won't take long!) flying around and swording enemies feels great.

Way of the Red is a pixely action adventure game where you play as a birdman on a mission of justice(?), fighting your way out of slavery to the great Spire City to kill the King inside. There's some other plot bits going on there that are pretty glossed over and left for the player to decipher on purpose that help flesh out some background, but ultimately the game is pretty story light. The game's not a very long one, and has 4 distinct "levels", each with a boss at the end. Each area has combat powerups and a hidden collectible to get as well, that help determine the ending of the game you get. Getting the "Good" ending requires forgoing all possible hidden collectible powerups (or rather: not "using" them) - which, in a skill based game like this, doesn't really leave you much weaker than you'd expect, especially since you can still seek out the training characters and get their powerups. The game really isn't so much of a metroidvania as it is a game with big levels that aren't always completely linear. There's very little backtracking after the start of the game, which serves as a slow ramping up to show you getting new abilities and display how they work. The music is enjoyable and fitting for the game, but since you spend a decent amount of time in each area, the tracks can become a bit repetitive after awhile. Each area's track is fitting for the area and loops nicely. Sprite animations are well done and smooth, and the game's pixel art is cohesive and doesn't try and be over grandiose or use too many colors - it sensibly tries to keep the NES/SNES aesthetic. The game's meat is the combat and controls, which are swift and responsive. Attacks can be quickly strung together, both on ground and in the air, and you'll need to get used to doing this in order to succeed, especially in the game's later levels. As a tiny little birdman with a sword, almost every enemy in the game outranges you - however, you're much more mobile, able to glide, fly, and wallclimb, and gain projectiles of your own later on. You need to stick and move and push out punishing multihit combos strung together in order to cleave your way through enemies that are bigger and further reaching, and when done properly, feels very, very satisfying, and looks impressive to boot. You do need to be careful, as turning around mid combo is not possible, so button mashing too much will have you swinging at empty air unable to move while enemies come up behind you. Quick, precise motions are the name of the game. If you get hit by enemies, you do a small jump back hurt animation, Castlevania style, or Ninja Gaiden style. Every level has an end boss, which generally has 2-3 attacks it strings together, including one attack that normally gives it invicibility frames so it can recover from your withering assaults. The bosses are enjoyable fights and good punctuations to the levels they're in, and can be handled with lightning fast aggression, or slow plinks and pokes. Overall absolutely worth the price. Not a long game, but that means it doesn't overstay its welcome. Later patch changes made it so there's more checkpoints in areas which helps alleviate some of the frustration in the harder platforming segments which include Castlevania Medusa-Head style enemies dead set on picking you out of the area. Definitely recommend to any fans of platformer action games.

Way of the Red looks cute and simple. But it is a great little game with tight controls and very satisfying hack and slash combat. The story is fine, though nothing we have not seen before. The overall feel of the game brings to mind Cave Story with swords, and is a great choice for killing a few hours.

A real hidden gem. What if a sidescrolling beat'em up were also a platformer? You'd get highly compelling frantic action, that's what! The character designs are very imaginative, and the open-ended story about finding passion is pleasing (multiple endings). A smaller game with some rough edges/physics bugs, but that really only adds to the charm. If you enjoy high difficulty and fast-paced gameplay you're sure to have a good time.

I don't have this game completed and I don't care! This game has a brutal difficulty curve, far more brutal than I can deal with. I'm stopping this right now. I don't mind a hard difficulty curve like Castle in the Darkness, but this... this is so hard I've died probably over 100 times to the first boss and I don't know how to improve.
