Stretching across North and East London, the Gospel Oak to Barking Line – affectionately known as the ‘GOBLIN’ – has grown into a major part of the extensive London Overground network; a network which has specialised in re-vitalising neglected routes throughout the Capital, converting them into railways which are fit to serve a modern-day city. Explore the railways in the north of the Capital with the North London & Goblin Lines Route Add-On for Train Simulator.

The Gospel Oak to Barking Line was formed from an amalgamation of routes built in the 19th Century; the Tottenham and Hampstead Junction Railway, which opened in 1868 and spanned North London from Highgate Road to Tottenham North Junction; and the Tottenham and Forest Gate Railway, which first saw trains in 1894 and connected Tottenham to the existing line at Barking. Various stations have played as the terminus for each end of the line, including St. Pancras, Kentish Town, Moorgate, East Ham, Barking, Tilbury and Southend (the latter two being for specials only), however, the line came to Gospel Oak in 1981, and has stayed between there and Barking since.

Due to the GOBLIN’s route being a very indirect one into and out of London, it was pencilled in for closure under the infamous Beeching Report. By chance, very little of the Capital’s proposed changes took place, and the line itself escaped the axe. Even with the line remaining open, much of it suffered from poor maintenance and reliability would suffer greatly, trains not built to cope with the commuter demand were forcibly in service across the line, and all platform staff soon disappeared. Only one train per hour was operating by 1980, not ideal as an East-to-North connection.

Improvements would start to roll in with privatisation, National Express’ Silverlink introduced newer Class 150 DMUs across the line in 2000, along with CCTV and Information Points, all of which gave a great boost to reliability. It wouldn’t be until Transport for London took over though, that major developments would be seen and brand new, purpose-built rolling stock would arrive. By 2007, the line was operated by London Overground and new services were added at peak hours, weekend & evenings, platform staff were reinstated, the line was included as part of the Oyster Card system and added to the Tube Map.

In 2010, an 8-strong fleet of new Class 172 ‘Turbostar’ DMUs entered service, replacing the Class 150s and providing more comfortable and spacious journeys throughout. Despite this however, even these new Turbostars were not enough to meet capacity demands, and TfL began looking at longer DMUs that could replace them. Before an order was settled however, it was announced that the GOBLIN would be electrified, making diesel obsolete.

Since June 2016, extensive work has started to erect 25kV AC overhead catenary over the GOBLIN. Everything from track lowering, bridge rebuilding, platform lengthening and much more is required to ready the line for new electric services; the line was partially closed until September 2016, and has been fully closed since. Services are set to begin once again in February 2017, and with further evening and weekend works, the GOBLIN will be fully electrified by the end of the year, ready for a fleet of brand new 4-car Class 710 ‘Aventra’ EMUs to take over from the Class 172s in 2018.

The Gospel Oak to Barking Line has had some tough calls in its past, but has risen from strength to strength in recent years, thanks to the projects of London Overground, and is today a major commuter route for those in North & East London that is set to only improve in the future.

The North London & Goblin Lines for Train Simulator is a stunning recreation of the North London Line (between Richmond and Stratford), GOBLIN (between Gospel Oak and Barking) and the West London Line (between Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction), all operated by London Overground Rail Operations Ltd. When combined with the various freight connections and locations, the North London & Goblin Lines easily boasts more than forty-miles-worth of suburban railway to explore.

Would 100% Reccomend this DLC, it is great and a good price for the amount of content that comes with it.

Firstly, I have to say I'm extremely dissapointed with the class 172. I work on these units everyday in the midlands and I can safely say that this train sounds nothing like a real 172. Also the controls arent very smooth making it very hard to drive. However the route itself has be done to a high standard. But given how bad the Class 172 is I just cannot recommend this add on!

Now i have a big opinion on train simulator as a whole. But i will talk just about this route. In a word, if it wasn`t for the fact i got this for £14.99... i`d be well p*****d off. Still the trains lights randomly turn off... No passengers in train....very awkward to drive.... the 172 is in a word... no more than a class 170 with a few add ons. he sounds are c**p..... If you really want this and don`t own north london line...... buy that instead. The scenery is all that could save this route.

I have mixed opinions about this route.
Class 172
The model of the 172 included in this route does not look completely accurate. The doors don't look correct and the front somehow doesn't look right. The sounds are the usual class 170 sounds with a bad attempt at recreating the distinctive mechanical transmission of the 172. When you open the doors, the emergency brakes are applied and it takes a while to release them. The only thing that's good about this train is the passenger view.
GOBLIN
The GOBLIN itself is a nice route. The stations are nicely detailed and the scenery is accurate.
West London Line
The West London Line is also not very good. DTG has used the workshop route by Danny so the line doesn't feature any custom assets. Without any custom assets, the stations on the line don't look accurate at all. There is nothing to tell you where to change power mode except the fact that the power cuts out.
Overall
Overall, I would if recommended this route as it is a nice expansion to the North London Line. However, because of DTG's failed attempt at a class 172 and the workshop West London Line, I can't.

I like it. The Turbostar is not the fanciest train in the stable, but easy and relaxing to drive. The scenery is very detailed and varied, DTG has their home turf down pat. I get ~40-50 fps, very respectful considering the detail (many routes ~15fps on my GTX1080). Best seat upholstery ever! Even though TSW is already pre-purchased, I will be enjoying TS2017 for quite a while yet, so many great routes still to do...
The North, West London Lines & GOBLIN for Train Simulator
This route is basically the old North London Line iwth a few more miles of track and a 172 thrown in.
The Rolling Stock
Included with this route is a Class 378 and a LO Class 172. The Class 378 is the same as the other two ones. The Class 172 though is terrible. The sounds do not at all replicate the mechanical engine noise of he 172. The cab of the 172 is basic at best. No functioning TMS, no DOO, dodgy horn. 3 out of 10
The GOBLIN
The Gospel Oak to Barking line is actually pretty well done. The scenery is good and definatly gives it the rural feel that the GOBLIN has. I definatly like the Crouch Hill and Upper Holloway stations. 9 out of 10
The West London Line
The West London line is decent. The stations seem a bit bare but the scenery between stations is good. The only other problem I have with this bit of the route is the switch from DC power to AC power between Shepherd's Bush at Willesden Junction. There are no signs to tell you to change power so you only know to from previous knowledge or when the power cuts out. 6 out of 10
The Scenarios
The are a total of 7 scenarios for this route and three Railfan modes. One of the scenarios is on the West London line and the rest are on the GOBLIN with two of them based on the morning Woodgrange Park- Willesden Junction service. They are pretty good for once. 8 out of 10
The Final Score

[th]Catagory[/th] [th]Score[/th]

Rolling Stock 3.0

GOBLIN Line 9.0

West London Line 6.0

The Scenarios 8.0

Final Score 6.5

Really recommend this DLC to those that are new to train simulator. The class 172 is a really high detailed train. Same with the class 378. Over all it's a 9/10. (Feel free to add me as a friend)

What an amazingly interesting run through parts of the suburbian and industrial parts of London. The work that has been put into this route is nothing short of fantastic.

Now where to begin with one. Well in short The Goblin Line is pretty much an extension on the already released North London Line but now you more track to play with and plenty of scenario making possiblities. The Class 378 in the Overground livery makes another return but now we have the Class 172 'Turbostar' units also in the Overground livery but in a 2-car formation. Top speed isn't really high on most runs as it's around the 40-45mph mark but again these services aren't really designed for high speed and freights are even slower. The power for trains will vary alot as some sections of track can be diesel only, overhead gantry, third rail and even fourth rail for sections used by the London Undeground. There's not a whole of downsides to this route but they are there. The first one would be the price as it might seem a tad high but if you already own the North London Line then the Goblin Line should be marked at 40% off. If you got VERY lucky at the start of the summer sale as a glitch instead of changing the 40% to 50% off it instead ADDED 50% on turning it to 90% off as a result myself and many others paid only $3.99 before the problem was corrected. Probably the only glaring problem is the Class 172. It handles poorly compared to the 170, controls feel very heavy and the train will set it's brakes to emergency when the train is stopped at a station. Overall I'm still happy with the route.

Am thoroughly enjoy this addon. Wish there could be East London Line to complete the circle. In fact Installing this addon solved the non spawning problem i was having with the 378.

First off I must say that this route is a great expansion on the North London Line. I love how you get not only Gospel Oak-Barking, but also the West London Line to Clapham Jct as well. However there are 3 problems that earned this route a thumbs down. 1: The Class 172 is absolute garbage. Seriously, the controls are so sticky, it's nearly impossible to drive the train. You need to start decreasing the throttle about 5 mph before your desired speed and the brakes are practically nonexistent. Good luck stopping at those tiny 2 car platforms with this thing. 2: The route crashes too often. As with most DTG addons nowadays (especially expansions on existing routes like this or the NJT Morristown Line), the game tends to crash at complete random when I'm driving this route, no matter where I am or what train I'm driving. My current PC can run this route at excellent frame rates, but the game still just crashes whenever it wants to. It's like I question wether or not I'll be able to make it to the end of the route without the game crashing every time I drive. 3: There's a really really annoying audio bug that happens when you go under bridges in this route. Sometimes the reverb effects will be reversed. Basically everything is loud and echoing out in the open air and the audio is normal when you go under a bridge or in a tunnel, when it should be the other way around. So far the only way I know to fix this problem is to restart the game. I even found out that this bug carries over to other routes, meaning the audio stays messed up no matter what route you drive on until you restart the game. The worst part about all of this is that DTG will most likely never fix it. They're known for neglecting this kind of stuff in their games. Also now that Train Sim World is out, Train Simulator is pretty much history to them and there's no hope at all for updates and fixes for existing content.

I have a lot to say about this DLC but I will keep it short and simple and get right into it. Considering there are technically 2 routes packed into one DLC, the price is reasonbly high but I HIGHLY recommend you buy this when its 50% off. The route itself is extremely accurate and the scenery is also nice. However, the trains are controversal. The Class 172 sounds are not very accurate and they sound like they were pulled off from the class 170 dlc. The livery and design of the train is nice though with working destination. The interior of the train is also very well detailed. The Class 378 is also a very nice train with a outstanding design and livery. The interior of the Class 378/1 and Class 378/2 are the same and both very nice as they have a unique interior but the sounds aren't as accurate as I would have expected to them to be. In conclusion, I recommend this route if you like London Overground and doing stopper services. I'd give it a 8.5/10!

Please note this is NOT a review of the content of this DLC, but a warning of a potential issue for people buying this DLC who do not already own the earlier ‘North London Line Route’ DLC. Purchasing this DLC will grant your account the ‘North London & Goblin Lines’ and the Goblin scenarios. Your account will also be granted the older ‘North London Line Route’ DLC. However you will not have access to the North London Line scenarios which are normally provided with the ‘North London Line Route’ DLC. And as your account is now flagged as owning ‘North London Line Route’ you have no way to purchase them even if you wanted to. If you are affected by the issue you will have to contact Dovetail support at https://dovetailgames.kayako.com/ for a key to add the North London Line scenarios. If you have money to burn, you can purchase the ‘North London Line Route’ DLC *first*, which should add the route and its scenarios, and *then* purchase this DLC for the Goblin extension and Goblin scenarios. You are effectively paying twice which seems daft and I don’t believe it’s intended, but it’s the only way to avoid the issue. This however doesn’t help people (like me) who weren’t aware of this before buying this DLC. I have asked Dovetail to let me know when they have resolved the purchase issue and fixed it for existing accounts – if they do, I will update this post accordingly ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Technical information for those interested. Appid’s can be found at https://steamdb.info/ The purchase of the older DLC - 51894 ‘Train Simulator: North London Line Route Add-On’ adds the following content: 258663 Train Simulator: London Overground Class 378 'Capitalstar' EMU Add-On 325974 Train Simulator: North London Line Route Add-On 500217 North London Line Content & Manual The purchase of this DLC - 114630 ‘Train Simulator: North London & Goblin Lines Route Add-On’ adds the following content: 500211 Train Simulator: North London & Goblin Lines Add-On 258663 Train Simulator: London Overground Class 378 'Capitalstar' EMU Add-On 325974 Train Simulator: North London Line Route Add-On While obviously giving you the newer Goblin package, notably the North London Line Content & Manual is missing, hence the scenarios for the North London Line are not available. Steamdb confirms currently the only source of North London Line Content & Manual is through the ‘Train Simulator: North London Line Route Add-On’. Unfortunately, once you have purchased ‘Train Simulator: North London & Goblin Lines Route Add-On’ the older DLC is no longer available to purchase (you are considered to already own it).

2019 Review of North London and Goblin Lines: THE ROUTE - Immersive - Detailed - Reasonably accurate - Really can't fault the GOBLIN or NLL routes. THE CLASS 172 - Updated: now nowhere near as bad as most reviews make out! - Sound changes when window opened (a DTG first) - Driver cab door opens - DTG have attempted 6 speed gearbox but it's not great as there is still a constant torque whine. - Big CON: Emergency brake STILL comes on when doors are open. Overall, it's a good addition to your routes. The 172 is now much better and actually has some unique features. 7.5/10

    Feb 5, 2020

IMPORTANT NOTE : This does not include NLL as a standalone route or scenarios for the NLL route, even though it is added to your account with this purchase. Scenarios for the NLL will also not work with this route, so buy the original first. I was caught out by this but thankfully DTG support helped me out. As for the route itself, it is very nicely modelled and contains two overground stock (the 378 and 172). I cant speak for the accuracy of the locos, but heard the 172 has poor sounds compared to real life. Overall would recommend in a sale.

This game is alright, it isn't too bad. It's just that the trains stop working randomly and just reverse when you put the forward throttle which needs fixing ASAP.

it is a great route but it crashes when you reach the end of the line I reconmend it because it is a Transport for London route
  • sja914

    May 24, 2020

I think this route is still pretty decent. The scenery work is good overall and no route is ever going to be perfect, for numerous reasons. However, I do feel a good amount of immersion when driving these lines and there are a few gradients to keep you honest. I'll give the route a thumbs up. Just be aware that if you want tons of AI, then like many other DTG and third party routes you'll need to turn your settings down a bit. Also the 172 isn't great so I'd recommend driving with the AP 150/1 enhancement on the diesel lines if you have it.
  • oscar162

This route is good, if you like driving freight trains and stock moves etc. You can do stopper services by LO, but the trains provided are of poor quality, although the class 172 does have opening cab doors which is good. Also I didnt get the scenarios for the North London Line-Why?

This route is good, if you like driving freight trains and stock moves etc. You can do stopper services by LO, but the trains provided are of poor quality, although the class 172 does have opening cab doors which is good. Also I didnt get the scenarios for the North London Line-Why?
