About the Game

Recount the bygone era of Pacifics in Scotland, and provide a glimpse into the potential future where 72010 is brought to life in this exquisite Just Trains Pro-Range Add-on for Train Simulator!

Following the nationalisation of Britain’s ‘Big Four’ railway companies into British Railways in 1948, it was decided that many new steam locomotives would be built with a standard design in mind. This practice would ensure common parts were used across a variety of locomotive types, nation-wide, avoiding the significant cost of maintaining older designs that differed greatly from region to region.

Robert Riddles, former apprentice of the LNWR, subsequent Stanier-assistant and Vice-President of the LMS, was appointed ‘Member of the Railway Executive for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering’ of British Railways. Riddles, along with two assistants (both former LMS), were to oversee the design and construction of Britain’s new standard locomotives.

The standard locomotives were to incorporate the best of the ‘Big Four’s successes, however naturally, with three ex-LMS men in charge of constructing the new locomotives, many aspects of the former operator’s designs were present and this became apparent as new traction rolled off the production line. Common features found on the locomotives were high running plates, taper boilers, two cylinders and streamlined cabs. For express operations, the reliable 4-6-2 Pacific design was used.

One such 4-6-2 rolled out of Crewe Works in December 1951. Designated the BR Standard Class 6, or 6MT (Mixed-Traffic), this new locomotive was primarily based on the previous 7MT Britannia Class, and was destined to work in Western Scotland. To be useful ‘up north’, the Standard Class 6 was built with a smaller boiler, increasing the route availability by saving weight. A total of 10 Class 6 locomotives, which were named the Clan Class, were constructed; the last of which was ready in March 1952. More were planned, another 15 in fact, however continuous steel shortages delayed the order, and the publication of the 1955 Modernisation Plan put paid to any hope of seeing more Clans.

The 6MT Clan Class got its naming from a desire to represent Scotland on the rails. Previously, the Highland Railway had its own ‘Clan Class’, which was steadily disappearing after a lengthy working life. Each of the 6MT locomotives, 72000-72009, were named after a Scottish Clan, specifically; Buchanan, Cameron, Campbell, Fraser, MacDonald, MacGregor, MacKenzie, MacKintosh, MacLeod and Stewart, 5 of which were in common with the older Highland locomotives. The aforementioned plan to build extra Clan Class engines already had names in place, 5 of which were not actually ‘Clans’ as they would’ve served the Southern Region if true.

In service, the Clan Class was subject to a mixed reception. Those who were trained to make her steam had little quarrel over performance, the fleet could cope with any duty it was designed for. Many crews out of Carlisle and Glasgow, where the Clans were based, found them trickier to master as the low number of locomotives hindered effective training. Nation-wide trials took place in 1958, and while inherently similar in performance – regardless of location – their utter similarity to the Britannia Class caused confusion. The Clan Class was often booked to operate Class 7 duties, naturally, being pressed into services that required more power resulted in falling behind schedule and, unfortunately, damaged the Clans’ reputation to the point of being deemed a failure.

Despite what management said, and the lack of chance to improve the fleet, those who had the chance to man the Clans were taken by them – when steamed and stoked properly of course. In many regards, the Clans succeeded in fulfilling their duties as a standardised, all-purpose locomotive.

As is the case with all BR Standard Classes, the end of the steam-era saw plenty of locomotives retire long before their operational lives were at a close. The Clans were no exception, with the eldest having survived only 14 years on the rails. Due to only 10 being in service, it did not take long for all the Clans to be scrapped, none survived beyond August 1966.

There is some light at the end of the tunnel for the Clan Class. In recent years, the Standard Steam Locomotive Company have begun work on what would’ve been the 11th locomotive in the class, 72010 Hengist. This loco, when first planned, was one of five bound for the Southern Region and could have lived a rewarding life racing down to the Kent Coast. With any luck, 72010 will one day be reality, resurrecting the Clan Class and becoming the 1000th BR Standard steam locomotive ever built.

The BR Standard Class 6 includes all 10 named members of the 4-6-2 Pacific locomotive, in clean, intermediate and weathered BR Brunswick Green livery and features the standard BR1 tender; also included is the in-production 11th member, 72010 Hengist, complete with modern safety features and modern BR1B tender. First Open, Tourist Standard Open and Brake Standard Open Mk1 coaches are also included in multiple BR liveries.

A selection of career scenarios are included which see you put the BR Standard Class 6 to work on the Western Lines of Scotland route, and a variety of Quick Drive consists will allow you to experience the Class 6 wherever you may choose!

This is a fantastic engine to drive once you figure out how to steam her. Just did a run last night on the West Coast Mainline over Shap with eight coaches and averaged 70 mph most of the way, cresting Shap at 48 mph. Be sure to read the manual, it's found in your Train Simulator installation and will explain how the brakes, reverser, injectors, and other tid bits of how the locomotives operate. The F4 HUD will not work with these locomotives! Also the F5 HUD incorrectly says that the Clans start with the damper and blower on, they do not. I initially had the same problems as Mr. Andrew did, minus the overpressuring, until I realized the damper wasn't open. Firing should be just like in real life, a 3-5 shovel fulls at a time, every few minutes or as often as nessecary to keep the fire mass in the ballpark of 650 lbs. Building the fire up to 700-750lbs will give you maximum heat when you're working the engine hard. Not mentioned in the description is that the Pack comes with JustTrain's collection of AI locomotives. Included are the A4s, V2s, 5MTs, and 4MTs. Hopefully a few of those models make it to Steam in their drivable form in the near future.

Very good locomotive pack, good modeling as always from JT. And a definate learning curve from other steam locomotives I have. The scenarios are great and challenging. And the Hengist is great! The only thing I thought Jt could have done which would have been cool, was to include ALL the clans, the ones that were built, and ALL the ones that were planned for a kind of "Alternate reality" where they all were built. With 2 versions of the locomotives - Classic (W/O Weathering) or Preserved which would be like the Hengist will be. That would have been cool to see and I hope that they can add them in in an update or something.

Unless you're familiar with Just Trains work it is EXTREMELY recommended to read the manual first as this will save a lot of headaches and premature tantrums. This Clan Class is a significant improvement over the earlier one brought out by DTG and once you're used to the controls it will perform beautifully with few nasty surprises. You get 10 members of the class in clean and weathered appearences along with a 11th bonus loco that is being built to modern standards. You get coaches in two liveries and three decent scenarios. The view outside isn't too bad but the AWS will be heard outside the loco preventing an accidental E-brake application. Handling is nice and fairly trouble free. Wheelslip can still occur but not to the same frequency and frustration as the other add-on. Sounds are much better though it can get a little distorted sometimes. Unlike most pick up and go loco's this one can be used in both warm and hot modes letting the driver become more involved in it's operation which is really nice. For players the may already own Just Trains 7MT Britannia will feel right at home here as the 6MT is pretty much a scaled down version so the manual and controls are very similar otherwise newer players may face difficulty Great add-on that was VERY badly needed.

I very much enjoy this DLC, the steam operations are superbly detailed and the graphics are wonderful. That being said: this engine is a lot harder to drive than the standard Black 5's that come with the Western Lines of Scotland. For instance: if you wish to set the reverser, you first have to operate the locking notch, then you can set the reverser, and then you have to set the notch again. Firing the engine, working the injectors, etc. It all requires a lot more steps and this is really challenging if you try to look out for signals, stick to the maximum speed and so on. It's great fun, but I would recommend reading the manual before you buy the DLC, just to see if it is for you.

By far the best and most advanced British steam locomotive I have ever bought. I checked Just Trains' website and it seems they have more BR Standard Class locomotives. I love the attention to detail and the advanced mechanics of this DLC and its engine. I definentely recommend it!

I just bought this engine and I already love it, the amount of detail is amazing, the sound feels the most realistic I've ever heard in TS I love all the little fun effects like the reverser "creeping" if I don't lock it. HOWEVER the manual, which is really needed for this locomotive, appears to be outdated and feels rather unclear to me. I have found out that to conduct blow down, you should hold shift+y and not y alone as instructed in the manual. Also the ashpan doors seem to be operated by shift+control+7 and not by control+7 as in the manual, but I can't exactly tell if I'm right because I can't see any difference in the exterior nor any message that something changed, no matter which combination I use. Rocking off the flames gives some sparks if the right hand rod is used, but left hand doesn't seem to do anything. Cleaning the smoke box sometimes gives an effect, sometimes it doesn't for a reason unknown. Same problem is with the "B" key whistle which sometimes gives a sound but more often only a cloud of steam and no sound at all. I have trouble operating the vaccuum brake, despite the manual telling that all I need to do to prevent the brake from applying itself back is to keep the small ejector open a little, I have to keep it open all the way as well as cracking the large ejector a little bit too, causing the engine to waste more steam than it produces. I've tried to fix it by lowering the reservoir meter but I couldn't see any information about it in the manual, so I can't even be sure if it's a right way to do it. In other words, the locomotive is amazing and worth recommending, but the manual will give you some angry time and leave you questioning yourself very often if it's your mistake or the dlc build's error when something is not working, because the manual is unclear and there doesn't seem to be any pop-up informations in-game either.

This is an extremely realistic locomotive made by Just Trains, you should read the manual on their web page. Overall this locomotive is really enjoyable to drive. 10/10 Recommended.
