I just came off a replay of Hakuouki, and was desperate for more interaction with the Shinsegumi. This game caught my eye initially because not only was it on sale, but the art was beautiful and even though I knew it wasn't at all connected with Hakuouki, I decided to give it a shot. Before I get into the review proper, a little note: I did my best not to compare this game with Hakuouki, since the two plots are pretty much night and day, and that's fine. The Shinsegumi are a popular subject for media material, so Hakuouki definitely didn't 'do it first' or anything. That being said, let's start with the negative and end on the positive. Negative: - The available guys all seemed to be in-love with the heroine from the moment they met her. This isn't exactly new for otome games of this nature, but most of them offer some sort of buildup. This one never did, and it was jarring. - The heroine, likewise, seemed in-love with them right off the bat. I tried to rationalize it was her being swept up in the events of that night since they did just rescue her, but again it was weird. - I wasn't expecting a deep, complicated plot when I bought this. But I also wasn't really expecting to finish every route, extra stuff included, in a couple of hours. A short game wouldn't bother me, if the plot was at least decent and the plot for this game just fell flat. It was the same thing, time after time, and each route only offers minor changes (in my opinion, at least). - The soundtrack has some issues, which I've seen mentioned in other reviews. While not awful, the looping isn't done well and it's a little choppy, the way it shifts between tracks. This wasn't a huge issue, since I just turned the BGM off and listened to my own music, but still. - No Hijikata route. I guess there was a trade off? We could romance Shinpachi here, but not Hijikata. Okay, look, no bullet points for this complaint: I'll be honest and say forceful guys are not exactly a turn on for me when it comes to romantic plots. I don't mind if the guys are a little rough around the edges, but when it starts to become physical then it crosses a line I'm not comfortable with. I mention this because in this game, nearly all of the guys are extremely forceful in their attraction to the heroine. Given the period the game is set in, I am used to the guys being 'protective' of the heroine and holding her back, expecting her to listen to their orders. If that had been the case, I'd have overlooked it. That was, sadly, not the case. I can't even remember the amount of times the situation turned sexual and the heroine spent most of it trying to tell the guy to stop. Most of them continually said it was 'her fault for being so cute' and that 'it seems like your body likes it' and I just, I was disgusted. Maybe it was translation? I'm not entirely sure and at this point, I don't really care. The only two options who didn't do this to such an awful point were Nagakura Shinpachi and Harada Sanosuke; the former was actually rather sweet and I'm glad I did his last, meanwhile the latter wasn't perfect but it was better than some of the others. Souji and Hajime both had varying instances of these bad scenes; it was disappointing because outside of those scenes, Hajime's route wasn't awful. Souji's route left almost no impact on me either way, which is disappointing as he'd been my first pick. Heisuke's route, however, made all of the others look tame. Now let me start off by saying that it was Heisuke's route that caused me to break my rule of not comparing this game to Hakuouki; in Hakuouki, Heisuke took me by surprise as being one of my top three routes, so seeing the way he acted here was...hard to swallow. His overall personality would have been fine, I'm not really into guys that act like bratty kids but, whatever. No, it was the way he treated the heroine. He was constantly groping her and basically violating any and all personal space boundaries. That scene during the fire where he sexually assaults her? I had to walk away for a moment. It gets worse from there, and what's worse is even after spending so much time telling him no, in the end the heroine is in-love with him and accepts his actions. She does this in all of the routes, but not until Heisuke's did it just drive home how awful this game was at handling relationships. Again, I know that given the time period, women did not experience some of the freedoms we do now, and so when I play games set in these kind of settings I try to remember that. Does that mean I support plots that use sexual assault for the sake of drama and shock? Hell no. It also means I don't agree with notions of 'violence = love' which is an awful trope and shouldn't even be a thing. It was just a huge slap in the face when after repeatedly telling him to stop, the heroine found herself liking his actions. She even tells him at one point 'no means no' and he then tries to guilt her into complaining about how she always tells him no. Ugh, if there was ever a moment I wished we could get refunds on games from Steam... The positive aspects are pretty much what I stated earlier: the artwork was very lovely and the game was on sale. If I had to come up with another, I guess Shinpachi's route was pretty nice? I got the sense that he and the heroine did have some sort of connection, and even the scene where he had to strip her was given context, plus he clearly wasn't happy doing it. His route is the only one I can safely say I didn't mind playing. Overall, this game was a huge disappointment and while I'd gone into not expecting much, I left with such a bad taste in my mouth. Every person is entitled to their own opinion, but I'd give this game a pass if you're considering it.

I thought some time if I could recommend this game or not. Sadly I came to the conclusion to not recommend it. While I like all of the Dogenzaka Games in general, I'm pretty fed up with this one. The artwork is beautiful as always, but it's the only good thing about the game. The music is not bad, but there are some tracks which are rather short and sound kinda strange in their short loops. There are typos and grammar errors as well, but I don't mind these flaws very much. What's so annoying about this game is how it is cencored. Don't get me wrong, there is some xxx-content in the game, and that makes it even more disturbing. While you sometimes stumble over passages like that, the endings are cut short! The best endings depends usually almost identical story pathes as the normal and bad ones, and is then cut short. You get one or two sentences suggesting xxx-content left for your imagination, and then the game apruptly ends, leaving you with a trophy and and empty feeling. I found out you get even more content when you get the "bad" or "normal" endings. That's really disapointing. If they decide to make the game for younger audience, why didn't they put in any other content? The game lacks also very much of it's historical background. They could have put some of this inside instead. I didn't expect a second Hakuoki, but I expected at least a full game, not some random scenes which are cut short on top of it. Well, it's not the worst game I ever played. Even though I'm disappointed, I think there are people who would like it. Don't buy it if you are a hardcore Hakuoki or Hijikata Fan, he's not a love interest in this one and the games have not much in common. All other can think about it and might buy on sale. The full price seems a little too high for a cut short game.

The only thing not cringe-worthy about this otome is the art. The writing is just plain bad...cringe-worthy, even. It made me laugh out loud in places, but not in a good way. The looped music is generic and does little to enhance the mood or quality of the poorly written story. There is no character progression and the MC is a carbon copy of the female protaganists in the developer's other visual novels. In short, do not pay full price for this VN for it is a sub-par otome and not worth the money.

Recommended... maybe. (I say "maybe", because it wasn't utterly horrible, but not anything special either.) The story in the introduction was okay. While I liked the opening for the game (at the beginning of the prologue), the prologue itself wasn't particularly thrilling or exciting. The route plots varied... somewhat. They were mostly focused on relationships. I liked that to some extent, but I felt the situations were cliché and I could guess what was going to happen. The clichéness I could handle, but if I play a game, it should be interesting. If I can all the time guess what happens next, it's not exciting anymore. (Gosh, I sound like Heisuke...) So no particularly adventurous plots and if there were moments like that, they were gone in an instant. I liked the art. The characters were all attractive, the backgrounds didn't stood out to me (which can be good or bad, depending on you)... So I won't really complain about that. As for the characters. Gosh, some of them made me SO ANGRY. This is a game so I shouldn't take them too seriously but I was mostly really annoyed by how forceful some of them were and didn't take NO for an answer. The MC didn't resist enough in my opinion, so I don't know whether she truly disliked it or not. BUT. They were a couple of sweethearts that made me squeal in their routes. It's a MUST in my otome games, at least. I did notice some typos. Words that didn't belong together, some odd phrasing... But it wasn't enough to put me off. Except, in some riskier scenes, I felt like facepalming. And laughing. So. This game has good and bad things. I don't regret buying the game but I think you shouldn't expect too much. I suggest buying it on sale, if you don't mind some cliché romances and hilarious (or not) misunderstandings.

Recommendation: Maybe+ I've played a few Dougenzaka Lab games, mostly on my phone cause they are...well...mobile games after all. Mobile to PC ports. So I'm not expecting something on the same level as say: Hakuoki or Nameless. It's cute, I love seeing the various forms the Shinsengumi members take, especially Souji and Hijikata. Saito is my waifu though forever always and I played his route first. I will say the naughty parts certainly use some creative word usage, I'll give them that much... not exactly classy. I've read fanfiction with well written saucy bits more impressive than what this gives. It isn't my favorite Dougenzaka Lab game. Pub Encounter and Men of Yoshiwara, imo, are stronger otome visual novel games than this (I played those on my phone and bought them again on steam on sale) I bought this on sale, for like....5 bucks? Well worth the 5 bucks but not the 15.99 price tag. Though more convenient to buy on steam than on the mobile platform just because they charge, what, 4.99 or something per route, then 2 bucks or something for the extra chapters too. So horse a piece I suppose.

TL;DR: I struggled over whether or not to recommend this one. Ultimately, I'm choosing not to, but please feel free to read my review to see if my concerns about it will bother you. The story has its good points too, so there may be many people who are happy to overlook what I didn't like. --- Overall Impression: My first impression of the game was that it was "otome by boardroom" because the prologue is flat terrible and the characters felt like cardboard cutouts. Considering the mess of many of the routes, I still sort of feel that way. I ended up playing the most upsetting route first, which negatively impacted my enjoyment of the rest of the game. It did end on what (for me) was the "best route", and that softened my feelings towards the game. Ultimately, my feelings are very mixed. Content: There is at least one character (Heisuke) who outright treats the heroine as a sex toy. He sexually assaults the heroine multiple times. His route was actually rather horrific to me and as the first route I played in the game, I almost dropped the game entirely. I'll talk about him a bit more in the "Love Interests" section of my review. I'm not sure whether this game is rated R-18 or closer to X. It depends on the route. Some routes are very 'fade to black' with gentle language. There are other routes where the language was rather vulgar and distasteful. I write erotica for a living, so I'm not prudish, but the poor translation made the sex scenes very hit or miss. Otherwise, I'll give my general warning of, "This game is created originally for Japanese audiences/sensibilities and set in a historical period. Please be forewarned that you might be taken aback by some situations." Translation/Editing: It feels like not much care went into the translation. There are the usual offenses from this publisher such as missing punctuation, typos, confused words (your/you're; etc), smashed sentences (missing the end of one and the beginning of the next) - something some people don't care about much or are willing to overlook. There are also frequently giving people the wrong names, once a characters name hadn't even been translated from the Japanese, and there were frequent missing words (sentences like "Have eaten today?"). The translation appears to have been done fairly literally, leading to awkwardly worded scenes or scenes that lose their feel because they're written in short, declaritive sentences, like a child's What I Did On My Summer Vacation essay. It also makes the sex scenes extremely awkward and sometimes very vulgar. Honestly, of this publisher's games, this is the one whose translation/editing I am least impressed with. Art/Character Design: About half of the character designs felt strong and the other half felt rather boring. A couple of the CGs were pretty good, but most were just fairly generic "affectionate heads" - that is to say, the couple in question tucking their faces close and looking sweet on each other. The art wasn't awful, but there were few moments where I thought, "Oo - a CG!" The Heroine: Bland as bland can be. Sometimes she had sparks of personality - but in those cases she was extremely selfish and/or stupid. She also seemed to have no backstory other than, "My family died in a fire. Also, my father was a fireman." What was she doing to support herself before the Shinsengumi came into her life? Apparently nothing, but how is that possible? To entertain myself, I decided she was probably secretly an arsonist. Honestly, it fit. In every route there were at least two fires - often more. In most of these routes, many of the fires were fairly mysterious and seemed to start for no apparent reason... unless you realize that a lot of what happens in the game is honestly classic arsonist moves. She always happens to be on the scene, happy to help, throwing herself bravely into the fire; etc. Yes, yes - I know how common and how terrifying fires were in the period, but play the game with the idea she's an arsonist in mind and see if she's suddenly not actually somewhat interesting than if you accept the idea she just is this paper-cut-out heroine. The Love Interests: For the most part, most of the routes were okay. I really enjoyed Sanosuke's route - his was the only route where his character stayed consistent. The other men were all over the place - it was like someone kept forgetting which route they were writing. It felt as if the scripts were probably handled by multiple writers except for Sanosuke's. He was "himself" in other routes and in his own. I really enjoyed Soji in everyone else's routes, but when I got onto his route, he was only "that" briefly before going off the rails. Every route started out promising and, except for Sano's, got sloppy in the middle. Most of them ended strongly, at least. The route I hated - hated! - was Heisuke's. It was honestly horrifying. I'm going to spoiler in the rest of this, so skip the rest of this section if you don't want to be spoiled. It started out cute, with him being all "genki-desu" and friendly and childishly charming, as you'd expect from his type. Then you were immediately his favorite toy and all the adults around him were sort of, "Well, I mean, please forgive him... Not like we can stop him." Probably because he's absolutely DANGEROUSLY INSANE. He's Id incarnate. All he thinks about is his immediate desire. He sexually assaults the heroine multiple times in public - even drags her directly into dangerous situations so he can get off on it. He literally does not care that it upsets her. He doesn't care about even so much as also helping a little girl escape a fire when he comes to rescue the heroine. The heroine has to basically beg him to take the girl along. The endings for his route show him at least trying to understand the heroine wanting him to think of others, but it's pretty clear that even in the best ending that he doesn't really get the idea that other people are real. Story: I mean... what can I say about it? There wasn't really a story. The Shinsengumi help put out a fire and immediately start hitting on this poor girl. They weirdly introduce themselves/each other, ignoring the fire in order to hit on her. Their leader turns to the girl and says, "Pick one of my captains and live with him - you don't have a home now, right? It'll be fine!" The most threadbare reasoning to get a random girl to live in close quarters with them. She picks someone and is almost always immediately in love with him - and don't worry, he almost always immediately was in love with her from the prologue. Why? No reason I can tell. Possibly because she was cute and helped them fight the fire? But with maybe 20 words exchanged between them and he's jealous of her attention and she's lonely without him. It's positively insulting. Certainly, it's unfulfilling to have no build-up to romance. Often, there's not even build-up to the sex scenes. Oh, right - sometimes there will be events that happen that parallel historical events, but they're given no real weight. Sometimes it happens as pure info dump that has a character spouting something that sounds like it came out of a history book. I guess it's just to remind everyone that they're the Shinsengumi, not firefighters. Because that's like 90% of what some of the routes are actually about when it wasn't about trying to sex up the girl who is constantly saying, "No!" I usually say, "Story doesn't much matter to me - I prefer characters." but I think I'd honestly have preferred if it were a game about Shinsengumi-era firefighters to this. In closing... Bleh. Sano's route is lovely and a couple of the others had their nice moments hidden in the rough, but unless you read my review and thought, "Oh, but, that doesn't sound bad, actually?", I wouldn't recommend getting the game.

"Hey I just met you, and this is crazy, everything's burning, so I love you maybe." Yeah... that's pretty much the only way I can sum it up. Protagonist is a bland, boring, doormat. The only thing that was pretty memorable was while going through Okita Souji's route I was like "I think this dude's got TB". Went on wikipedia, and voila, sure enough, dude's got TB. Props for getting that detail historically acurate, game. On my scale of trashy romance stories, I would rate this: dirty sock.

I honestly don't understand how this game has 'Mostly Positive' reviews when honestly the writing is so bad. The music is at a decent level and the art in my opinion is gorgeous but that makes me dislike the game more. The art is so beautiful and to only be accompanied by rather crappy writing just throws the whole thing off balance and is slighlty insulting. Now if I wasn't looking for something super story depthy wise and just wanted a quick dating sim to maybe pass the time I would say it would be..mostly harmless? But to pay such a high price on a game with such bland and flawed writing makes zero sense. The characters have one defining trait and barely any depth there is a reuse of many phrases and ideas and the plot barely goes anywhere. The situations they are thrown in is kind of boring (at least to me) and didn't keep me engrossed too long. Though that isnt going to stop me from completing the game strickly because I'm a jackass and constantly want to complete games even if they disappoint me together as a whole. Now I'm not sure about the rest of the games by Dogenzaka lab but the one other I have played- (Being Office Lovers) Has also greaty disappointed me. I'm glad I got this game for the anime game sale a few weeks back or I wouldn't have been buying it any time soon, and if I had would have been returning it right away. I feel bad for anyone who spent almost 16 dollars on this game just to be disappointed in it's content.

The first time I’ve learned about the Shinsengumi was when I played Hakuouki. It’s hard for me to put in words of how much I love that franchise; however I do know that it’s a very loose adaptation of the real Shinsengumi, and other people could get the identities of its members and make more adaptations based on their own insights. I had that in mind when I got this otome game so I will try my best to NOT compare this to Hakuouki or the real people that were part of the Shinsengumi. The MC is the cheesy little airhead that most of readers of these kind of visual novels are used to. She often asks herself if her beloved really likes her and “why does he keeps teasing her”, blablabla. Same old thing. Now, Dogenzaka has a habit of creating maybe the most atrocious love interests ever made for a dating simulator. I’ve seen this on other games from other developers, but the “a*sshole syndrome” is strong in their titles. The story is really simple. There’s only 7 chapters, 3 endings (which aren’t that different anyway lol), a sequel and a “dating scenario”. Everything happens very quick, the MC is already in love with one of the guys in the early chapters and the same goes for them. I wish that the chapters were longer at least, it feels unnatural the way they “fall in love”. Now, let’s talk about the guys: - Okita: shallow and overall forgetful route.
They could’ve talked about the fact that he has Tuberculosis, but they just had him coughing all the time and didn’t touched the disease subject anymore. Alright, even if it’s sad they could’ve said more about it or they could’ve simply not included that aspect at all. The time period of the story matches the Ikedaya Incident (where according to my research it was when they discovered his disease at first because Okita fainted), but still. Leaving no answers about his coughing fits was annoying. He’s forceful too.
- Saito: Kinda cute. I like reserved/shy men a lot, so I liked him. No big complains here. - Shinpachi: Ah, he was a cutie pie. Sure, it was cheesy as hell, but I don’t care. There’s a few awkward moments tho. - Sanosuke: I thought he was going to be an a*sshole but he turned out to be okay. Like all the other routes, it’s all pretty shallow, but this character has a certain charm of his own. - Heisuke: The first route I’ve played and that almost ruined the entire game for me.
Ok, I said on the beginning that I was going to try to not compare it to Hakuouki, but I LOVE Heisuke on that franchise! And finding out that he’s a f*cking psycho rapist here was terrible! Seriously, the only thing that ever happens is Heisuke trying to f*ck the MC all the time, especially when there’s a damn FIRE happening and he’s like “oh well let’s f*ck and burn babe”. And she forgives him because that’s just “how he express his love”. HOW ABOUT NO??
5/10. I recommend getting this game only on sale and if you’re up to read cheesy love stories, don’t expect a deeper plot here.
AND AVOID HEISUKE LIKE THE PLAGUE!
Well I've always liked Shinsengumi related stuff, anime, manga, otome games, history textbook! I just have played 2 routes: Saito and Heisuke, I found Saito route very sweet, even if I think that the plot is a little poorly written, but in my point of view it was cute. In the case of Heiseke tho... I really don't know what to say, but I'm seriously disappointed AND SURPRISED! I didn't have the guts to finish. I mean, rape in the middle of a fire and then feel in love?! What the hell?! I'm still questioning myself if I"ll or not finish the other routes, I'm kind curious, but I don't know if it's worth my time, the art is beautiful, the plot a little nonsense, the music is bad, but you can eliminate that putting earphones and listening any other song, Heisuke in this really turned me off but Saito gives me hope, so I don't know.

I cannot recommend this game at any price. The music is badly looped and doesn't match most scenes very well, the art is okay and the writing is just plain terrible. Couple this with the fact that most of the routes are *incredibly* rapey and the characters often stop to have long, heartfelt conversations in buildings that are ablaze, I think this would have to be the worst otome game I've played so far this year.

Although the art is extremely well, I can't really seem to enjoy it as much as other otome games that I've played. The chapters aren't very long and you have to choose answers suddenly right after you just answered one a few minutes ago. The writing could be way better. It's to vague and not really going into details or using bigger words. It only took me about two hours to complete one characters route, and the extra endings all together. It would also be better if the heroine wasn't someone that gets in others way, instead of being a damsel in distress most of the time.

I want to like this game but replaying it from the mobile version, there's nothing really better with the PC version. First of all they got rid of the Live2D style movement from the mobile version which a PC game would have no problem doing. The story writers must be dudes as there is so much rape. Next is the story. I played Saito's route and it's pretty bland. You meet them when the city is on fire. Then it's some banter before the city is on fire... again. But oh hey! The Shinsengumi are the one's shooting the city. Why? You don't find out! However that's enough for MC just to trust them. Then more banter about that before you get the sex scene. Where Hajime just rapes you. No consent on the MC part, he just "tears up my insides" when he does that. Sex isn't supposed to hurt and if he really cared about her he would have controlled himself before scarring her for life. Of course however whoever wrote this has her thinking it was OK and it "felt good" (it won't). He ditches her to play "I'm not good enough" emotional abuse so she'll hunt him down and tell him how he is. It's all about him and what he want, not her at all. Cue saving a kitten from YET. ANOTHER. FIRE. Animals tend to stay away from things that are on fire. The sequel to Saito is about the only sweet thing in his story, the "Date Scenario" should be called the "Date Rape Scenario" The MC even says "No means no" and Saito is still "I'm going to ignore you and sexually assault you anyway!" The write of these must think it isn't rape if the man isn't mean when it's bullshit. Hearing that the other routes are just as rape filled, I think I'll pass seriously playing them and only getting the cheevos just to complete the %.

I enjoyed this game. It's entertaining enough considering it's pretty much smut. The translation was decent, and the graphics were good. The storylines weren't really drawn out, which would have turned this visual novel from a moderately entertaining way to pass the time to utterly ridiculous. A few critiques are as follows: The mc is very passive, which is ALWAYS infuriating. The men are overly arrogant and pushy, which may rub you the wrong way (unless you're more of a masochist/submissive type of person) There is one story line that takes it WAY too far. If you played it, I'm sure you know which one I'm referring to. That scene alone should have had a trigger warning for victims of sexual abuse and trauma. I'm a pretty open minded person, and it was a bit much for me. At the very least the aesthetics of the game are pleasing to the eyes, the male MCs are beautifully drawn, and there is enough content to keep you fairly interested to play a few routes. I wish there was a "Meh" button, but since there isn't, I won't be a hater.

When I first bought this game, I couldn't continue past the prologue because it was just so boring. I recently decided to start playing it again because I finished Hakuoki: KW & EB and wanted more of the Shinsengumi, but this was just awful. There is no real plot, the characters are a poor version of the characters in Hakuoki, (they made them similar , probably on purpose, for example Saito being the silent one, Heisuke being childish etc.) it's also very short and not worth the price at all. You can basically finish each route in less than one hour. I would only recommend this game if you're looking for some shameless smut with no plot, but wait until it's on sale. TL;DR: Stick to Hakuoki.

THE CRINGIEST OTOME I'VE EVER PLAYED. this game literally disappointed me. the fact that they made us choose someone we met 5 seconds ago is so frustrating and it doesn't make much sense. I bought the game because there was a discount and i wanted to try a game with Shinsengumi before buying the Hakuoki series. I made fun of the game every single time i could because the story lacks reality.. Iwanted to play every single route to write a full review but i gave up at Sanosuke's route..like..i cant continue this bad game..it really wastes your time.. xxx content in the game was REALLY disturbing. Like all of the love scenes had sexual scenes and in soujis route, it even went as far as sexual abuse and that is not nice.. About Sojis route: Well i love sarcastic characters but when they try to touch someone sexually to make fun of them is not cool. In the beginning i thought the game would be about his illness (coughing and things) but creators didn't even touch the subject. I actually like Okita's character but like i said things he did and said were really disturbing. pros: good character designs (except some of Soji's behaviours) art is really good cons: cringey story line (if u love them, you should check this game out!) abusive sexual content sexual content contradicting dialogues.. missing parts that shown but never explained..

All I wanted was to enjoy a peaceful VN and take a break from some bigger games. That’s all I wanted. Purchased in 2017, downloaded in 2020, I was aware that this was an adaptation to Hakuoki. I’ve already finished that series and I was excited to play a short alternate version of it, and like I typically do, I start from the character tropes I like least to most. Starting with Heisuke; the “childish” one. Chapter one and two, a little strange but overall no problem. The MC is notably pathetic and helpless, however. Chapter three is when I pulled all the breaks. “What? No. That’s disgusting. This can’t be right.” His entire route is the stuff of nightmares. The only thing Heisuke wants to do is fuck the MC whether she wants to or not, no matter how many times you reject his advances or push him away, he always continues as if you agreed to this. This route is rapey, nauseating, rude, crude, and sexist. I went back and checked out the reviews and decided that this is a revolting game not worth reading. Fast forwarding through the other playthroughs, it looks like no matter the decisions you make the endings, good or bad, are all incredibly similar. Choices don’t seem to matter except for the achievements and cutscenes, and quite frankly, spending any amount of time on this VN is a waste.

The art is beautiful and the guys are good looking, but I do wish they would add more guys to choose from.
