I went looking for something to replace my past addiction to playing Super Off-Road Racer at Holiday Hills. I found it in spades with Super Pixel Racers. Really good stuff, and a bit more of a challenge than you might expect!

Could have been a really fun game but the controls are dodgy. Point mode works as expected once you get used to it but I wanted to use classic mode. For some reason when turning right it would sometimes turn left, while turning left worked all the time, i would find myself having to turn all the way around 270 degrees to the left to make a right hand turn like zoolander. I tried another controller but couldn't get the game to recognise it even though it works in windows and other games. Keyboard controls are way to slow to turn. Disappointing as it seems like it would be awesome with good controls.

The controls on keyboard are awful and but even with a controller the controls don't exactly feel good.

The controls are super tight! I guess the reason why some reviewers think the car is not responding to a direction input is that the car only has one pixel image for a direction angle of around 22.5° so that a 90° turn has the car changing its image only 4 times. It's easy to see when you drive in a cardinal direction and input a small direction change: the car will not change its image, but will change its movement direction! That's why some may think the car is not responding, "lagging" or "latency" but in reality the controls are super tight! Put attention to the small white arrow around your car, this indicates your movement direction much more precisely than the car pixel image. With that out of the way I finally can say that I love this super nostalgia gem of an awesome oldschool pixel racing game! I loved playing Offroad decades ago and this game enhances and extends this genre in so many levels. Foremost the drifting mechanic adds an enormous amount of interesting challenge to the game. It reminds me of Hotshot Racing where also drifting gave you nitro boost, but as isometric view in a pixel style. It's so rewarding when a drift turns out perfectly around a corner and you feel like a pro. There is a learning curve and a high skill ceiling, but the game's difficulty rises player friendly slowly within 6 leagues, with around 15 races each and around 1 minute each race. There are different modes mixing things up: the standard Mario Kart mode: race against other NPCs for 3+ laps, Timeattack: beat the set time around 1 minute the race the track for 3 laps (beating the gold time is challenging), Takedown: nitro boost crash into other cars and take them down, and another mode where the track is not a round course, but one line like in a Rallye aaand randomized before you and a white arrow indicates the next curve for you like your Rallye companion :-) Equally rewarding and fun is celebrating to the awesome 8-bit track between races. After a race I always spend 30s just dancing and being in trance diving in the nostalgia feel of this awesome soundtrack and enjoying the moment. Upgrades are spent on each individual car and not globally for all cars, so rising into a new league will reset your upgrade progress because you then drive a different faster car. It doesn't even matter much what you spend your cash on, because you can come through all races pretty much without them. The upgrades are just there to make it easier to progress if you're stuck. Also every higher league will net you double the price and require double the upgrade price. So each league has it's own cash ecosystem. You only need to upgrade to get through this exact league you're currently in. The multiplayer is present and has a really cool feature. You can login in for an online race and play single player while waiting for other players to fill the lobby. It's pretty empty, but I'd appreciate if you add me and we let our drifting tires whirl dust into the screen! The only negative thing regarding the game I can think of is that there is no skip button during the 5 second long finish result screen, but this is super nitpicking. Outside the game I need to say that although this game released on all major platforms, there is no cross-play. This would be really cool if they added it to let the multiplayer thrive more. But the devs seem pretty silent. The community is pretty small. Worse is that there is an achievement for not only taking part in but winning an online match with a full lobby. The chances that this is happening is so small. Also achievements shouldn't depend on other players which are uncontrollable, so this is a clear negative in my book. Nonetheless, I love this game and fully recommend it! Give it a go and see for yourself!

Fantastic game ! I'm 47, played SuperCars 1&2, Super OffRoad, Nitro, Overdrive, Jupiter's Masterdrive and the likes back in the old Amiga days and this is by far the best Top-down racer I've played in years. Magnificient pixel art, wonderful handling (classic hard, having so much fun I did not even tried the other mode), fantastically panting races....and a lot to do (races, time trials, takedowns, cup, customization...)what Can I say? I love this and I played Ultimate racing 2D, Roadclub, Mantis Burn Racing, Super Arcade Racing, Little Racers Street, and others, not one can measure up to this one, except, but it's my heart speaking, Death Rally Classic (not the garbage new one). Thanks a lot devs !

Pros: Steering feels great, slidey arcade fun Rumbling with controller gives solid feedback for nitrous and sliding Great soundtrack Varied environments, night/day/dirt/snow/pavement Cons: Low track variety Can only customize car color and stat upgrades Steering can feel too sharp sometimes(i.e. car has perfectly sharp steering, doesn't require braking skill) Don't know if developers will keep updating the game with features, seems like little communication Fun little game, worth my money, haven't tried multiplayer yet but it's easy to pick up and probably great for as a couch multiplayer. Wish it had a map creator/editor and more car modification options.

This game is A LOT OF FUN. I'm a sucker for pixel graphics and these pixels are crunchier than a bag of kettle-baked Lay's. The mechanics of the game (steering, drifting, nitro) are pretty easy to master but when you hit it all just right, drift perfectly through a hairpin curve and nitro boost out into the straight away you feel like a gawdam champion. 10/10 would recommend. Haven't tried online yet, I doubt there's enough a player base but whatever. Still worth the 10 duckets I dropped on it during the sale. It's a nice little time killer and just plain, good fun. 10/10 would recommend

I downloaded the game because of the nifty pixel artwork and the nice concept, and because it showed up when I search for games like "Super Cars" and "Micromachines" on steam. I tried the game for a few minutes before giving up, uninstalling it and asking for a refund. I mean all they had to to was make the car turn left with left and right with right. Instead I got a convoluted "pointing control" scheme which resulted in me losing the control of my car and crushing every few seconds. The "Classic Control" scheme was even worse somehow. No matter how much I tried I couldn't control my car adequately to finish a lap, let alone win a race. My advice to the developers of the game: Play some "Super Cars" or "Micromachines" and see how the games control there. That's what the average person who stumbles upon your game expect the controls to be like. As things are the controls are terrible, *especially* for fans of old top racers.

Some people complaining about the controls, but I can say that if this game LOOKS fun to you, and you take the time to get used to "pointer" based controls, you will experience a level of nuance that will blow your mind. The "classic" controls feel like what you would find in Micro Machines, Super Off Road, or RC Pro-Am. However, the turn speed is locked in this mode. With pointer mode, you can flick the analog basically 1:1, meaning you can whip around hairpin turns with ridiculous control. It's almost a little exploitable when you truly get the hang of it, but tons of fun when you unlock the faster cars. Unfortunately no one was online in my first session. But the career mode is very fun, experience all the tracks for the first time and unlocking faster cars. Most if not all of the cars are based on real world counter parts, with hinting names like "Impression" and the not so hinting "Evolution". You get the idea. My only true grip would be that without a multiplayer base, I'm not sure the game is quite worth the $15, but the look and feel is pretty polished even for it's minimalism, so I see why it's priced there.

Super Pixel Racers is fine. The first couple hours I was hyped as the game scratched the nostalgia itch. Many of the Steam reviews mention an old-school arcade game and I'm no better. The top-down view takes me back to Combat Cars. After 40 races there's little left to keep me interested. It's not all grim, Super Pixel Racers gets a few things right. First, I found the handling to be a joy once I got the hang of it. After driving cars from behind or inside for so long the top-down view can be a difficult transition. It's like rewiring your brain! It takes time to get a feel for it, more than a couple races. At least it has both a pointed mode where you point the joystick in the direction you want the car to go. And classic where you steer the car left and right no matter which way it's facing. Anyway, driving is extremely arcade. Do you consider it driving if the car is locked at full throttle the whole time? You only have control over if the car will drift. So you will be drifting around every corner, building up your boost. To say again, you have no control over the speed of the car. It goes and you steer it. I found it to be a lot of fun and satisfying when you get a perfect drift around a corner. The game is broken up into several racing classes. You start in C-Class (it's too easy), then move to B-Class (also too easy), then to A-Class (brick wall hard). I wish Super Pixel Racers started challenging the player sooner. You should keep in mind A-Class isn't the final one. After that, there are Rookie, Pro, and Master cups! There's a ridiculous amount of content in the game 40 races and I'm only on A-Class. The races are starting to become too similar and the thought of continuing isn't appealing. I made it this far because there are different kinds of races. As you would expect the game has standard ones where your goal is to come in first. Then endurance races have you racing until the timer runs out. They feel like RallyCross as the game feeds you the corners instead of giving you a map. Endurance races are my favorite since they take the most skill and planning your boost is more difficult. The final type of race is Takedown. Instead of racing your task is to knock the other cars out of the race by damaging them. Very strange in a racing game because the best way is to drive against traffic to ram the other cars. Not for me. From races, you earn money to spend on upgrades and new cars. The upgrades are the normal stuff. Top speed, acceleration, and durability. Allows you to make up for where you're weakest. While there are new cars I never made enough money to buy one. They're extremely expensive and I wasn't about to grind races to afford it. The cars are locked to the class and I wanted to move on. There doesn't seem to be much of an improvement and the money is better spent on upgrades. Two issues with Super Pixel Racers. First, there are way too many smoke effects filing the screen. If it is related to car damage I can't tell but they get in the way of me being able to clearly see. It's annoying. Second, the game turns into bumper cars. In a drift, you lose a little bit of control and the AI gets in the way. Then you kinda stick together. In fact, you kinda stick to the walls too and I've been locked to a straight wall as everyone drives past. It gets worse in A-Class where the slightest tap ruins your race. Overall, Super Pixel Racers is fun for a bit. Eventually, it grows stale as there are too many races with little payoff. Choosing your upgrades more carefully would have been fun. Buying new cars would have been fun. 40+ races with almost no differences at the end of the line. The developer is skilled but this is far too much of the same content. I only recommend Super Pixel Racers if you need an old school racer. Click to see my curator for more reviews!

Controls aren't bad, they are broken. Both keyboard and controller have the same issue. There is about a half second latency from input to response. You can see problem in the arrow that tells you what direction you are turning. When you apply input instead of responding, the arrow will twitch in the wrong direction, vibrate, then respond. This is a disaster for an 8-bit retro style game whose core should be based around a high framerate low latency feel. Game looks great, and I hope they fix the controls because it looks like it could be fun, but it is a horrible chore right now. Like one of those drunk driving sim cars they put high school kids in to demonstrate poor response time.

"PLease connect a controller" Like... Really? I'm playing on a COMPUTER. You asking me to forfeit a PERFECT controller, that its a Keyboard, with all its hundreds characters, to use a controller, that I simply DON'T LIKE, DON'T NEED TO, and more importantly... ITS ALREADY CONNECTED. Dude... You have a game with good graphics. All oldies like me would LOVE to TRY your game. But... You just don't want us to play. Unninstalled. Besides, when you start the game, it says: version 0.9.0. Which means it isn't even complete. Avoid this game at all cost.
