About the Game

It's that time of year again where developers release Christmas related games that soon destine themselves to haunt the steam libraries of gamers annually, or at least until they are deleted. No doubt, this game is no exception. Secret Santa is a pixel art 2D arcade stealth game featuring Santa doing what most would consider illegal and sneaking through people's house at night. Your job is simple. Guide Santa to the Christmas tree of every house and drop presents off without being detected, shot, chopped, or blown up in the process. Enjoy 30 stages of Santa working his way through the nice and naughty list, only to face the real challenges ahead with 3 more difficult lists on his belt to overcome.

Full disclosure: I know one of the game's developers. So far the game is pretty good! I am only on the second section (The Naughty List) by this point but it is already getting more challenging. The guard dogs are vicious The rifle carrying Grandma's are a crack shot The Egg Nog is tasty

This game will make you jump! Every time I get caught my heart skips a beat and all the hairs on my body stand on end. Just wait until you encounter the gunner grandmas, yikes! It's a nice simple game where you can just jump in and fart around when you got nothing else to do but don’t feel like investing in a more complicated game. For the price, I have no complaints. This would be a great game for my phone. I hope to see it on the app store someday. I would suggest letting people know in the menu, that the spacebar is the main key to press for selecting menu options and the in game ability key as well.

Briefly: An arcade stealth-puzzle, Secret Santa is short but fun game with a hilarious idea and moderate execution. In some western cultures during Christmas, Santa sneaks into peoples' homes and leaves presents to the nice children. Why he has to sneak like that? Why not just boldly step into their homes and be warmly welcomed? Well, that's just the weird Finnish way. Anyhow, this becomes the idea behind Secret Santa. Children and sometimes adults are on the look out to catch Santa while he sneaks to the Christmas tree, leaves his gifts and sneaks back to the chimney.
Mission Christmas tree
Each level starts and ends at the chimney. Santa has to find his way to the Christmas tree while avoiding any "guards" like children, gun-wielding elderly and dogs, and traps like bear traps and effing mines and lasers. Santa gets three doses of sleep powder to take out guards to add some tactics to the party. Bonus points (and an achievement) can be got by also feasting on all the cookies and eggnog you can find, usually hiding behind an additional set of traps and guards. As a funny detail, the levels are children on "Nice lists" and "Naughty lists" etc. Nice people's houses are (quite logically) the easy levels and the naughtier they get, the more traps and guards there are. Also, as a nice detail the naughty children surely don't get presents. Finally, you even get to play as Krampus, with his own powers! In a way the easy and medium levels act as organic tutorials, introducing new mechanics and traps. The level design is good and diverse. Everything is deterministic, if not always synchronized, rendering the levels into kind of stealth puzzles, especially once the freaking murderers appear.
Technically simplistic
While the game is good, its options are limited. The controls are arrow keys and space (for action) but they cannot be changed. There appears to be no controller support currently. Aspect ratio can be changed conveniently at any time but otherwise there are no resolution options or option to go windowed mode or adjust volume settings. As for gameplay, my only qualm are the clumsy, unreliable hitboxes. The game appears to use two different kinds of hitboxes, ones for stationary traps and ones for guards with sight. The stationary traps were okay: you hit the trap if your shadow directly under you hits it so that's logical. However the guards, with their various lines of sight, would sometimes notice Santa even just seeing a tip of his hat. I felt it didn't make sense much as it surely looked like they wouldn't notice him. It could be even rage-inducing at times to lose a level repeatedly through such shenanigans. A word on the music, I'm sure you are not surprised that it's a bunch of remixed Christmas tunes. A pleasant soundtrack, it's not fancy but it works.
Merry Gear Solid vs. Secret Santa
There was a short-lived controversy in the discussions about the similarities between Merry Gear Solid (MGS) and this title (SS). Having checked some videos of that game, they share the idea but MGS is a full-blown puzzle game with a story, while this is more like a casual arcade stealth game. Gameplay is quite different between the titles, MGS having and using special items in a single house while SS having individual houses with the idea "get in, do the thing, get out". Besides, the devs of Secret Santa even credit MGS devs, so I think they are alright.
Conclusions
I beat the whole game in 1.5 hours. Was it worth it? I think it has just enough content for the full (anyway cheap) price. It's fun though not exactly relaxing (considering the annoying hitboxes). Also, for once I completed a seasonally fitting game.

1 Dollar for every hour of fun if you want to complete the whole game. Did I say fun? If pulling your hair and screaming at the top of your lungs once you think you've finished a level and the laser (that I swear shoots chili at you) hits you in your fat santa toe, then yeah, it's fun. It's not overly challenging and playing as Krampus at the end was a blast! Worth getting for the price!

I tried. I really did. I watched Michael's RageQuit on this. I was prepared for it. I was wrong. Nothing prepares you for the ass kicking that you receive in this game. Grinch didn't steal the Christmas, the kids in this game did. Brings you back to the olden days when everything was difficult as hell. Props for that!

+ Good and challenging level design (Combination of Stealth, Strategy, Puzzle and Precision) + Very good soundtrack + Accurate controls + Good variation of Enemies and Obstacles + Kept me interested to finish it the entire time - Really harsh hit dedection - It's not always obvious, when they can spot you or shoot you. - Easy to get blocked by a wall or furniture in the levels sometimes Overall, it is a nice, but short game.
