This game from the good games i played Game Play: Fine Graphics: Fine Audio: Fine My rating for this game 5/10
  • Jun 23, 2016

I thought about liking this game anyways just to offset the like-dislike ratio a bit, but this game honestly isn't good enough to warrant that. The art and gameplay are slightly reminiscent of the Heroes of might and magic games which is why i bought this, however, it is far inferior to those classics. It only costs a dollar, so if you are curious then perhaps it is worth buying regardless. The biggest problem I have with the game is the overall alpha level feel and polish. There are very few assets in the game and there are no movement or attack animations. I found the game too easy though I have not gotten too far yet. Every part of the game reeks early access with the constant feeling of "this part might be good once they do a proper job on it". Edit: I have edited this review in response to a comment from the developer. There is now a tutorial available, and it seems I was mistaken about the developer not intending to update the game. It will perhaps improve in the future. However I still do not really reccomend the game in this state unless you are curious.
I want to like this game, it’s nearly fun.
This game is almost fun, but it falls short in so many places. pros

The concept, the setting is very cool
The voice acting isn’t bad
Cons

The controls are really bad. Clicking on a character or enemy often doesn’t work as they have to be clicked in precisely the correct place
Visually, the game is much too cluttered. There is just way too much detail for such a pixelated low res game. THe monster design all the way to the pixelated scribbles on the back drop just leave too much of a visual mess
The combat is straightforward but uninspired.
The game defaults to Monitor 0, instead of whatever your primary display is (shift + win + arrow key)
Overall, I would much rather play The Banner Saga than this.

This game has a nice idea & has promise, but it's very unfinished. I like the art style and music but both end up being very repetitive. There is only one battlefield where all fights take place. When there are lots of people on the battlefield, it becomes very confusing and hard to tell who's where. There's no strategy in this game at all. The skill tree is pretty useless. Even the upgrading of your army feels very lame. There is only one attack spell, and even that is useless (it takes off 30% of your health every time you use it and it hardly causes any damage). Enemies are very unchallenging. There are only about 5 monster types. There's only one boss in this game and I killed him about 1/3 into the game. The game has no finale. I feel like this is an opportunity for a good game but it was wasted.

The title itself betrays a large part of the story. We play as Xzus and visit the purgatory. I have to admit that playing simple titles with a simple pleasant game mechanics and a certain amount of pixels is quite enjoyable. Though the game itself is not too long, however, it has it's own encouraging atmosphere.

WTF! you call this shit a game? I can't even play it ^Decided to give it another shot after it was fixed, the game is pretty much nothing, repetitive, I don't even enjoy the story progression if there is one. sorry mr. developer
  • Pale Dolphin

    Jan 28, 2017

Game's not worth of a review. Reasons: 1. Game doesn't work. It loads the initial screen, shows the main menu covered in clouds. You can't click anything on the map. 2. Help menu literally says: "Blah blah blah". I can't stress it enough, how bad are games like this one, and how none of devs like this should be able to make profit off of their broken product, while cheating the player base.

so far, just about every game in the "new reality studio pack" bundle has been total garbage. even though it may seem like a deal, spending the dollar on this would go much better to a bum on the street than playing this crap.

Heroes of Might and Magic and Kings Bounty style of fighting in very ugly game, with annoying sound effects. Gameplay is decent and when I spent 10 cents with coupon for this game, I must say that it's worth of it.

The game is reminiscent of the very first Heroes of Might & Magic, but even that had better graphics. I like the gloomy atmosphere & music, the fog on the map is nice, but the enemies get redundant. The battle music could use a few more tracks, but the real let-down of the game wasn't all that (you almost expect it from this type of game), the big flop was the ending. It left me asking "Is that it? What just happened? Did I just beat the game?" Good for an afternoon if you need to distract yourself from something you have to do online, but not much else.

I have no idea why the reviews for this game are mixed. Purgatory is a turn based RPG with a skill tree system, a decent amount of enemy types, great music, a compelling story, and a decent amount of levels. You cannot do much better on steam for 99 cents. The main issues that people seem to have with this game is the balancing, the shortness of the game, grinding, and the lack of enemy types. First of all, the balancing does have major issues, but only if you take the time to grind and level up the main character, Xzus, a ton. If you play the game the way it was meant to be played, pushing through the levels with the troops you have earned , forming a formation and strategy and attacking the enemies, then this game is balanced perfectly. If you want a challenging and fun experience, do not grind on the first couple levels until you have mexed out the skill tree. Another issue people seem to have is the shortness of the game. I think this is one of the best criticisms a game can have, since it means that you wanted more of the game. Anyways, this game only cost 99 cents, and thinking that you would get a ton of time out of it is idiotic. The game takes ~5 - 10 hours to beat depending on how you play it. For 99 cents, this is more that acceptable. Another apparent problem people say is that you must grind in this game. This game actually contains little to no grinding if you play the aforementioned way, pushing through with your current troops instead of farming easy battles. The final problem i have seem people complain about is the lack of enemy types. This isn't that huge. Though you dont face new enemy types every battle, the game throws new ones at you from time to time. I do get this complaint, but its not a massive deal. OVERALL One of the best games you can get on steam for 99 cents IMO Great Story Great Music Great Art Decent Gameplay FOR ITS COST it is very good would reccomend

This is a tactical RPG set in the afterlife. Based on the vocalizations of the protagonist, I'm not sure Purgatory is where this actually takes place... but then again, he could just have a cruel tongue... Anyway, for the price it is... decent. Not great, but not bad. And with such a low price, there is a chance you could recoup the purchase price with the Trading Cards it drops...
  • Salarn

    May 1, 2018

https://youtu.be/AUXBEj3yXoU The overwhelming strength of the protagonist is a design oversight that removes all encouragement to use any other troops made available to players, draining all strategic challenge out of the game.

This is a game I REALLY want to write a positive review for, however the latter half of this game DRAGS. And I don't just mean a little but to the point I was excessively bored. This could have been remedied if say you had a speedup function during the enemy phase, since enemy phases take so long in this. The thing is I love this game's concept, its execution, and how it tells its story. But the way the gameplay comes across is dull if even they changed the battle music, or the background every so often that would put some MUCH needed spice into this game. Plus the drop rates for the two highest units (the hellhound and abomination) are ABYSSMAL, I only went through most of the later areas once because at that point I could one shot everything except cerberus. I do not joke about that. Its just if those was made a wee bit better (and had a more definitive ending) I could more easily recommend this.

This is a real gothic pixel art tactical turn based strategy game and I love it. I like the smeared and extra unclean style of the pixel design, because it fits incredibly well to the story. As a lonely undead hero with hordes of different soldiers you have to face the attack of other undead. Skeletons, hellhounds and ghosts can be used in the individual battles. These are numerous and with almost 11 hours playing time you can slaughter your way through the map. Between the fights there is always background information about the story. There is a detailed and balancing long skilltree with which you can expand the individual skills of the player. Defence, attack and magic. All this is known from other tbs games and will not surprise experienced players. At some point it will be possible to summon your own creatures on the field. The music is quite good and Purgatory is well developed for an insider game. One sees the love for detail, if one looks at e.g. the designations for individual sections on the map. Sometimes you can also see insider jokes in the description texts. Just these small points I liked very much.
