About the Game

Praey for the Gods is a boss climbing open world adventure game where you play as a lone hero sent to the edge of a dying frozen world to discover the mystery behind a never-ending winter. Arriving with only the clothes on your back, you must survive the colossal dangers that you encounter. To restore balance and reclaim the land from the brink, you will be faced with questions that not even a God knows the answer to.

Scale Massive Beasts

Overcome impossible odds to climb atop and defeat the massive beasts that are bound to this land.

Climb, Glide, Swim

You can climb on virtually anything you can get your hands on, from ruins and mountains to the massive beasts that inhabit the land. Ascend to the tops of mountains and then glide over the open world to reach previously inaccessible locations. Swim in frigid water to uncover hidden locations that contain secrets and treasure, but don't stay in too long or your swim could become your last.

Explore, Craft, and Survive

You'll arrive on a frozen island with only the clothes on your back -- it's up to you to survive. Make fires, hunt for food, and find the equipment you need to make it through an eternal winter. Nature isn't the only danger, so craft weapons, defeat minions for better gear, and venture into long forgotten caves to discover their secrets. Triumphing over these trials will prepare you for the impossible odds that wait.

Make Your Path

Praey for the Gods is a non-linear game where you choose who you battle and how. While destiny will give you a nudge, virtually all the large beasts can be attempted in any order allowing you to set the course.

Unravel the Mystery

Why won't the winter stop? Why has no one returned? Cryptic paintings left behind allude to a story once thought forgotten. To restore balance and reclaim the land, you will be faced with questions that not even the gods know the answer to.

A Beautifully Frigid World

Explore a landscape of unending winter framed by snow-capped peaks and crawling fog. The remnants of an ancient civilization lie before you, but don't let awe turn into carelessness -- snow storms can crop up at any moment and bury you in a blizzard. Luckily, you can leave footprints in the snow and follow your footsteps back if you are lost.

About the Development Team

Praey for the Gods is being created by No Matter Studios a tiny studio of 3. Brian Parnell, Tim Wiese (glasses) and Hung-Chien Liao. In 2014, the friends began working after-hours on their first game. By January 2016, they had enough confidence in their progress to leave game-studio jobs in San Francisco and move to Seattle. Working in Parnell’s basement, they pursued an all-or-nothing dream to make the game of their dreams.

8 hours later, beaten all the bosses on hard difficulty with some dumb death due to wonky controls/movements whatever you call it, which can be improve. And yes, I like the game and looking forward for new stuffs! Survival - Pretty much expected with hunger/tiredness/warmth bar - non auto-health regen definitely a challenge Boss Battle - Actually makes you learn their movement and care for surrounding - half hp? that's 1 hit kill, and I'm fine with that Controls - bit disappointed at glider strafing - evading interrupted by smallest ledge/box/stone - confusing direction movement while holding onto bosses fur Items - equipment extremely fragile (really hope they increase the durability for each equipment) - sleeping bag only can be use once - please add camp fire in crafting menu

Has that Shadow of the Colossus feel (which i love), but with survival added to it. Great game so far and the fights are good an engaging. Some of the bosses did some things that actually surprised me. Camera angles can get a little weird sometimes, but it's a very good game overall, especially if you love SotC I look forward to more updates and the rest of the game

I updated my review after beating this game on legendary diffuculty\boost survival mode and reading\watching a bunch of negative reviews on this product. NoMatter Studio, if you read reviews, please, check this. In first place, I bring up some technical issues\quality of life stuff. Now, to users. Things you should know before you buy: actual technical issues and quality of life points. Here I'll tell you what I have actually faced here. - clunky controls Most of negative reviews were about them. I didn't feel that my controls were clunky at all. But, maybe, it is due to the fact I play on minimum quality level with 800x600 resolution (otherwise my PC gets overheated pretty soon and just switches off, thus, it is either 'Shadow of the Colossus PS2 original release graphics, or nothing), but on this quality level the heroine response quite flawless with no lag input (played with PS4 dualshock gamepad, connected to my PC via USB). What I did face, though, here is: when I switch back to keyboard, and then to gamepad during the playtrhough (when I need to aim very precisely with a bow, for example), there may be not lag input, but a moment when the heroine won't react to gamepad at all, and the game need second or two for re-recognizing it. Thus, if you play both with a keyboard\mouse and gamepad attach, you are warned: it may be issues right after changing controls. - camera Ah, yes. You will face some moments with it. It tries to brign you feelings of colossi shaking, flying, turning, moving and so on. In some cases it actually helps you by telling if the surface you are grabbing to is flat so that you can actually stand on it. And it really helps. But, mostly, it will cover your screen with fur\stone\whatever colossi has on its body you are grabbing to, confusing you and giving you some disorientation and additional time to understand where you are and where you are crawling now. For real, this may be your most dangerous enemy sometimes. Not too often, though. Again, ocassionally and not for long. - unskippable cutscenes Some of them are totally unskippable (not too many of them, mostly - some plot-driving ones), and for the most part - you can skip them, but not from the start, and usually have to wait for a second or so after the video starts. I understand why it may be issue, especially during tough fights when you just want to re-try the battle and don't want to watch the scene you already know by heart. - ocassional lags with grabbing When you want to climb from one surface to another (both of wich are stick together, but either at some weird or sharp angle, and, clearly, there is no empty space between them), the heroine may choose not to climb from one surface to another, forcing you either to stand on the ground and re-grab to the surface you need, or, if there is no such option, just release yourself and regrab with your grappling hook. I didn't face this issue while fighting colossi, but there were moments with it during regular open world exploring - ocassional music fading When you switch to your inventory\settings screens and back to game, there may be a chance that overall sound volume lows down. This can be fix easily by switching back to the settings screen and return to game again. Got it a couple of times. - black screens at locations switching (cave entrances, in and out) Got this bug once: I left the cave, could hear my heroine walking, breathing and jumping, open inventory\settings\save-load screen and so on, but the location itself was totally black. This was a one-time issue, and everything solved once I've loaded the game (had a manual save right before leaving that cave, thus, nothing was lost), but, still. It is a really tiny chance you may face it (literally, I've played for nearly 30 hours and completed the game twice, and only once met this bug. But you are warned: it _can_ happen). That's for actual technical issues me myself faced. Now for quality of life stuff. - no choice of what to pick if there are a lot of stuff on the ground If there are a lot of things lying around you, it is very difficult to choose manually what to pick and what not to, as you have to aim very precisely to the very item you need, and there is no button like 'highlight all the lying stuff' like in Diablo, and no additional window\scrolling option to switch through loot before gathering it. Only aiming for now. Very, very precise. As your pouch is divided into sections for: weapons arrows support\healing items, it can be a problem sometimes. It my case it was like: There were a lot of arrows, and a tiny berry among them. I had my backpack already full of arrows and, not only didn't need them, but the game told me that there is no space in my inventory (for them - yes, pretty fair, all arrow slots were filled). Thus, in order to pick that stupid berry, I had two options: Either to move somewhere and to drop all my arrows to pick up those which are near the berry I need Or, to aim with a mouse, to a very particular pixel at which the main heroine at last understand what particular thing I want her to pick. And I don't think I need to explain further why it is an actual flaw and should be fixed. - no default weapons memorizing (at least for me. Devs replied that this should not happen and they are investigating this case) The issue is, you have three hotkeys: one for meele, one for range, one for grappling hook. And here is the case: To shoot your bow and to shoot your hook, you press the same button. And, if, you _didn't_ equip your hook, the game picks a bow as a default. This fact is okay and I get it. What is not okay: If you did not use your bow at all, but use only grappling hook all the time (and, believe me, you will use it, you want to use it, it is a must to use it at some points), and then die or load game manually, and just hit 'aim\shoot button'... The heroine picks the bow instead, just because she can. Even if you didn't use it at all since the very start of the game. Alternatively, after death or a manual load, if you don't have a bow in your inventory (and, still, used your hook before you died or when you made a new safe file), and, again, you just hit 'aim' without telling the heroine to equip your grappling hook manually, she just won't react to your command and won't aim at all. At least until you re-equip the hook to the hotkey. Thus, now you are warned. If all the listed technical issues\quality of life stuff is totally unacceptable to you, but you still interested in the game concept\want to try it, but afraid that the game costs too much and is still so unpolished - I'd recommend you either: wishlist and subscribe and follow the updates, as the developers releasing hotfixes frequenlty and react quickly to bugs and feedbacks, or to get Praey of the Gods on sale. Despite all the listed, I still recommend this game. Like, hey, it was made by a team of only three developers. It is a finished product, it is definitely not rushed out, it is made with care, and there are may be some uncomfortable stuff, but overall, everything here is more than good and worth trying out. Really. Thus, those were technical issues. And now the original text of my review, totally subjective, and only about how it feels (at least, to me). Well... I have just finished my playthrough (hard difficulty, boost survival mode). Overall feeling: Nice, really nice. Throughout the whole game I was wondering if it's just a game-fanfiction, or a true sequel to Shadow of the Colossus. And, after beating the game - yes, you can call Praey for the Gods a real non-official fan-made sequel to that great game. Now pros: First off, the colossi themselves. The rest in comments. Start from 1st page to continue.

If you took Shadow of the Colossus, combined it with Breath of the Wild, and added some good, and some dumb mechanics, this is what you would get. There are many good things with the game, and many bad things as well. Lets start off with the good things.

Most of the colossi (all but two) are extremely fun to fight against. If you've played Shadow of the Colossus, and liked fighting Avion and Phalanx, then do I have good news for you. There's two flying colossi that are just as fun.
The music, and sound design for this game is phenomenal.
The exploration aspect is amazing with you being able to practically go anywhere you want, so long as the thing you are trying to climb is not ice. Not to mention the puzzles that you can come across, which utilize drawings found on rocks and cave walls to guide you in completing them.
Now for the bad things...

If you choose a game difficulty where weapons break, you will quickly find out that every weapon is incredibly fragile, and will break incredibly quickly.
Animals take an incredibly long time to respawn, but I'm hoping that this will be changed in future updates.
Snow storms are a thing that encourage you to not play the game. If you're caught out in one, you can't see a thing, and you start to freeze to death. The solution is to hide in a cave, and wait for it to stop. Now this wouldn't be so bad if snow storms didn't last 20 minutes, with a 2 minute break in between each one. Also certain clothing have cold resistance, but from what I can tell it doesn't help at all. You'll still start to freeze if you're in a snow storm.
In addition to your cold meter, you also have hunger, and tiredness, which is just a nuisance. Both deplete faster than the time it takes for your weapons to break... So if you pick a difficulty where those matter, you probably won't be seeing much colossi as all you'll be doing is trying to find food, and sleep.
Remember when I said there were two infuriating colossi? Let's talk about the mechanics you'll encounter with those two (without spoiling anything). When it comes to Shadow of the Colossus, NONE OF THEM were smart. What I mean by this, is that if you were about to stab one of them, they wouldn't slap you like a mosquito, killing you in one hit. Guess what? There's a colossus that does that in this game. It has a weak spot on both of it's arms, and if you don't get to it and hit it quick enough, you're dead. Instantly. That's one of the infuriating ones. The other is like if you combined Gaius, and Malus. There's a certain pathway you have to take up its body, you have to jump to and from different limbs, it's about as skinny as Gaius which makes grabbing the limbs a nightmare, and it walks while you're trying to jump from limb to limb making the jumping part a nightmare.
If you rage easily, or hate bad game mechanics, play this on Easy/Normal, and on Story mode (which means hunger, and tiredness only affect how quickly your stamina regenerates, and weapons can't break. They can be damaged, but can't break). Overall, like Shadow of the Colossus, it's a good game, but it has some dumb parts to it.

Cool game, but i hate those one-shot attacks from bosses. I get it, they are big and strong, but I'm on easy mode for a reason, so don't annoy me with bs like that. edit: thumbs up for caring.

Took me 15.5 hours to beat the game and unlock every achievement on Legendary-Survival. Pros: - Considering everything, I'd say the game is fun, the fun aspects outweigh the downsides. - The graphics work for the game, played on highest settings, and the location, the lighting, the setting... it just works. - The existence of a grappling hook is the biggest plus this game has. Climbing some of the highest hills effortlessly feels fantastic. - The addition of a stamina-based slow-motion when aiming mid-air with bows-grappling hook allows you to do some cool shiet. - The survival mechanics aren't obnoxious. You don't instantly perish when you're hungry or tired, or even when you're freezing to death. - Boss design, especially the later bosses, is solid. - The music, while I can't call extremely memorable, works with the intensity. Meh: - The undead seem to appear very infrequently, which is counteracted by the fact that they appear in packs, so I actually don't mind it. However, I had to go out of my way to actually farm some undead kills for my last achievement. - While I get that the land is supposed to be barren and devoid of life, there is a lack of hostile forces that bother you during your playthrough. Even a cliche wolf or a bear could've worked wonders, though I guess the lack of enemies work for the setting. - Because I'm a dumbass I checked every nook and cranny to make sure I found every relic in the game. Because of this, I managed to upgrade my stamina to the max very early on. Some of the bossfights, however, feel like they had max stamina in mind, which makes relic collection more-or-less required to not have a frustrating time with the game. - The hand-to-hand combat with the undead has almost no weight behind it. You can easily get ragdolled as you can ragdoll them. This, I don't feel like is a big problem but I think is a misstep. - Either I somehow totally missed it but there's almost no auto-save. Dying can almost reset your progress back to the temple, just after the last bossfight. Cons: - Controls feel grounded most of the time but when they get janky, they are JANKY to the max. And clunky. - The heat mechanic sometimes... feels off? Like even when I have the heaviest armor set with max heat, I feel like it wouldn't have made any difference. - While the boss designs are nice, the way you approach every boss feels disappointing. From an enemy that's just twice the size you are or like a boss that's taller than the tower you're standing on, it just boils down to mashing "or holding" your climb button and hitting chimes 3 times. Feels lackluster and disappointing, IMO. - Some bosses will shake non-stop, and your only way out of the situation is to wait until they reset back to a stance where you can actually hold onto. Again, this feels disappointing. - Higher difficulty levels makes the second boss fight EXTREMELY more difficult than it has any right to be. It is the biggest "quit moment" I can think of in this game. While even in the very last boss you can hit the chime, hold on, and hit the chime until it's complete, your stamina level and the water surrounding the boss makes it impossible to finish a single chime in time, without drowning. I've died uncountable amount of times on the second boss, at least 10 times more than I did in the whole game, combined. There are no bigger challenges than the second boss, IMO. - Ragdolling, and the recovery from the ragdolling is extreme. Mini-boss fights are almost painful if you bungle the dodge, not in a way that like you die instantly if you fail the dodge, but if the boss ragdolls you, you're just out for solid 5 seconds. This happens a lot of times, back to back, which just leads to frustration. - The protagonist is able to climb mountains like she's a mountain goat, and hold onto non-existing crevices with her fingers, but a smooth iron structure is too much for her? This is a weird choice. Though I feel like there are definitely missed opportunities with this game, and the way I worded my review sounds like I hated my time with it, it's actually the opposite. I enjoyed it, but I can't help but feel disappointed in what this game could have been.
A mixture between Shadow of the Colossus, Souls-like, and Breath of the Wild
"a combination of different things in which the component elements are individually distinct" The game is basically divided into three parts, the 8 colossi, 3 champions, and the survival elements of the open world. The Colossi: The absolute pinnacle of the game. They are extremely fun to fight, requiring thoughtfulness and strategy from the player, with unique approaches to each one. I also enjoyed that some colossi have more than 1 way to approach them which was extremely fun to figure out as SotC did not have this. I also like that you can go to the colossi out of order, though I wish they had taken this further. I have three main notes about the colossi though: 1- There is a new mechanic introduced into the game with the last two which I do not like. It either signifies that they ran out of ideas and introduced a new mechanic just for the two bosses, or thought of an interesting mechanic but did not implement it into the previous 6. Either way it makes these two feel really disjointed from the rest. 2- I wish they had taken more of a liberality for the design for the colossi, some of them are unique although some of them look similar to others in the game or from SotC. 3- I also hoped that the colossi would have been roaming in the lands instead of in a confined area. Yes it would have been hard and yes SotC doesn't do this, but I see this as the next step for what a spiritual sequel might do to enhance the experience. The Champions: They play the same as each other, with basic Souls-like combat. It's clunky and simple, though I did enjoy them as they are only three, I wish it was more fleshed and ironed out. Although I did enjoy the basic cycle of hitting their legs and dodging and then climbing up to hit their sigil one time, doing this cycle for 3 times. It was very easy, but the frustration came from the floatiness of the combat and the clunk of the character falling and flailing around. As they stand they also don't give you enough reward. each one gives you either a sword, grapple and bow, completing a set. Survival Elements: The game has survival elements, having to maintain your hunger, sleep, and cold while trying to figure out the boss isn't enjoyable AT ALL. Having survival elements also affects your experimentation, as you would try to use your bow and shoot at different targets but nothing would happen, so you load to a past save to not waste arrows. This immediately sucks the player out of the experience, SotC did not suffer from this and allowed to player to express himself. Also health doesn't regenerate which also contributes to further save abusing and less experimentation. Open World: It resembles the Zelda korok, you do mini puzzles and get a totem, three of them and you can upgrade your stamina or health. They are a cool idea and different than how easy it is in SotC, though I wish they were of less amount and more prominent in their locations, somewhat similar to the location of white tailed lizards in SotC, mostly they are at the different save shrines. In this game if you want ALL of them you HAVE to look up a guide. I was able to max out stamina on my own without looking up a guide but I reached my max and couldn't find any more without a guide, and as I dislike this kind of design, I did not look up a guide. I did enjoy the puzzles though, as some were simple and some were thought provoking. Very delightful. I also thought that the different armor sets and how to get them were fine. The Atmosphere and Lore: I enjoyed it and it was thought provoking, the different visuals and design of the world were very thoughtful. The lore notes also added some backstory, though I wish they were lesser in amount, as they feel like a checklist at the moment, and I wish they were more insightful, giving a good base of knowledge for the player to complete the rest on his own. TL;DR: A very enjoyable entree, soured with some unfortunate appetizer.

I think it the best SoTC clone out there. The climbing mechanic is mostly similar. For those who complained that SoTC was too empty outside the boss fight, this game try it best to fix that by adding survival elements and mob in the open world. It might not have the production value of a AAA game but it is competently made for a 4 man project.

3 people made this game. Is it the best, no, however it is a labor of love and considering 3 people made this, it is by far better then it should be. So worth it to at least throw money at them in hopes they can start something. Hope them the best, and see what else they can do. Labor of love 2022 award.

Pretty good. Some what a mix between BoTW and SoTC. It does boss fights quite competently. And exploration is fun by it self. But the exploration and fight sequences feel very disconnected. Mellee fight is bad. But everything else is very well done. It didn't take long to beat it, and there probably is much more to find in the game. But I am done for now and it was a good experience. Also thanks for the photo mode. I like it.

Doesn't feel good to play, the sound effects are really awful and not at all immersive, the music is atrocious and annoying epic movie garbage, 2 minutes of any boss track and I want to rip off my ears because the music's intensity is at 100 100% of the time. It's like listening to the more intense music from the soundtrack of Inception, but without ANY breaks or change of pace or anything during the boss. It's just generic epic music crap and it's the worst thing about this game. The bosses themselves look and feel meh, they aren't particularly fun to fight because of the clunkiness of everything. The survival feels tacked on and absolutely unneeded. These devs just don't understand what made SotC fun at all. It's a shame because I was really looking forward to this one. It tries to take from so many good games but does it poorly and worse. Just play SotC. Skip this.

    Fantastic Boss Slayer

Very underrated game, if you're a fan of Shadow of the Colossus you'll feel right at home playing this game. The world is very open and interesting to explore. The giants you encounter have amazing designs some of which I would argue are cooler than the Colossi in Shadow of the Colossus. The game is very realistic as your female character is constantly hungry and goes out of her way to piss off oversized beings, the devs did their research. The game is quite short (writing this review after game completion) so it's hard to justify the full price tag, if you can snag this on a discount it's a hard recommend from me. One of my few complaints about this game is the lack of music, music only plays when you encounter a boss so you'll be exploring the world listening to your parents arguing in the background. When the music hits though, it hits for sure.

This is literally like Shadow of the Colossus but with new environment. And I say that as an positive thing. Gameplay is mainly just boss fights, though there are some random enemies in the wilderness you can encounter as well, but none which you have to fight. You can always just run away from them. They have added survival elements as it is in frozen lands, but do not worry, you can customize the difficulty on that part very well. There is no horse like in SotC, but then, you have gliding blanket and grabbling hook. Audio is okay. Athmospheric and such. There is very little of speaking and no other NPC's at all, what I saw. Which is not a bad thing, but understanding the story might be a bit harder. But there are note's scattered across the lands to remedy that. Visually stunning. No complaints in there. Overall, I think it is very good game. Only negative I would say is that there is more or less half the giant bosses compared to SotC, so it can feel a bit short. Especially if you b-line straight to the bosses, like I did.

Praey For The Gods IS a Shadow of the Colossus (SOTC), Long Dark, and Breath of the Wild hybrid While still in Early Access at the time of this review i can safely say that this game has INSANE potential. I may be biased being a die hard fan of SOTC, but a part of me doesnt care because why would anyone complain about that? Its a SOTC clone with a new twist i can finally play off steam. The Bosses (9/10) -Only 5 at the moment -All fairly simple, none took more than ~20 minutes to kill (
EXCEPT THAT BIRD ASSHOLE
-Each fight was vastly difference with different environments and techniques you needed to kill the Boss. -Mini bosses scattered around the map that pose just as much of a threat, if not more, than the bosses themselves. The Map (7/10) -Small but still allows for a lot of exploration if you're just messin' around -Have the option to walk the obvious path or say fuck it and scale a mountain like a badass -Weather changes and day/night cycle can actually effect you in terms of enemies spawning and your survival ability -Literally only artic areas... which i knew... but i feel like trucking through snow over and over is going to get stale Basic enemies (7/10 -Only bumped into the easy to kill zombies, the horrifying ghosts that i could never kill without taking damage, and the skeleton warrior squads. -Not much variety but i didnt expect much since SOTC (which i compared this game to) had virtually 0 enemies so it was nice to hack and slack some baddies on your adventures -Some rewarding some give you nothing but less health afterwards Survival and Hunting (8/10) -For those who never played survival games its pretty straight forward - Food for hunger, fire for Warmth, bed for Rest... -Normal and Easy mode having these drain wont kill you, just make you slower/stamina regen worse -Survival is still necessary in Boss fights which i found silly as i was found making fire on top of snowy mountains while a boss tried to fuck me up Crafting and Repairing (6/10) -All weapons have durability -Durability doesnt last long but no bosses require weapons to fight - its all for minibosses, enemies, and hunting -NEVER let a good weapon break - always try to repair before it breaks. -Kind of wish the craftable and simple items had durability and the sick steel swords youd find wouldnt break after a bit but what can ya do, and its not necessary Puzzles (7/10) -Some insanely easy (small obstacle in your way), yet charming and fun to complete -Found myself in caves with puzzles that would involve other caves that i couldn't even figure out (not amazing at puzzles) but im eager to go back after my play through and give them a shot Overall (8.5/10) -Still Early Access and has SO MUCH POTENTIAL -Thinking about more areas, more craftable items, more BOSSES wooo -Lets get real we all wanna play this for SOTC 2.0 - give this a buy on sale and spend atleast 4-5 hours on your first playthrough and being immersed as fuck in this artic hellish world where you fight the Gods you once worshipped.
