I. RIG'S SAGA

The Viking High King is murdered and his Regal Horn is stolen by a man named Hagen. This event kickstarts a saga that will take Rig, his son and heir accompanied by his right-hand man Brand through the new continent of Northgard. The continent where he will make new friends and foes and discover a much greater threat than Hagen, and the reasons behind his father’s assassination.

II. CROSS OF VIDAR

is a Northgard's expansion pack bringing a new campaign to the game that takes place in an entirely new civilization: The Southern Kingdoms. This expansion also introduces a new faction unlike any seen before in Northgard, The Kingdom of Neustria.

After uniting all of the clans behind him, Rig will have to prepare them against Ragnarök but the clan’s faith in the King seems to diminish as time passes. It might be time for them to find a new home, but this won’t be an easy task…

Survive and conquer the unforgiving wilderness of Northgard by mastering the unique attributes of the many different clans that inhabit the continent!

Each clan has its own unique characteristics, bonuses and features. Since our vikings first stepped foot upon Northgards shores, several new clans have joined the battle, each introducing new ways of playing and methods to achieve victory.

After each additional clan release, Northgard is upgraded by free major content which add new ways to play, and allow you to discover all the possibilities that Northgard offers you!

Since the beginning, Northgard has grown with the additions of:

Northgard: Ragnarok

This review is for single-player only... When I first saw the 'Northgard' store page, it reminded of games like 'Age Of Empires', 'Civilization', and 'Settlers'. These types of games are my favorite, so I bought 'Northgard', and all of the DLC clans. PRO It's a nice game. I like the graphics. I like the scenarios. Controls are fairly easy to work. Each section of land you conquer has limited space for constructing buildings, so resource management is VERY important. The game clock runs through the seasons, and you need more wood and food during the Winter, so plan accordingly. Most of your regular citizen jobs are "set-it-and-forget-it" types. For example, assign a citizen to chop wood, and as long as things are going good you'll never have to mess with that citizen again. Just check on your "job slots" now and then to make sure they are still filled. CON I wish I hadn't spent so much money buying all of the DLC clans. Game play doesn't seem to be that much different when using another clan. For many players, just playing the base game would be satisfactory enough without the extra clans.

Decent game, but the last thing I want to see after purchasing a game is a bunch of "Buy Now" buttons on the title screen.

I really wanted to like Northgard. This game is aesthetically beatiful, and the ideas that constitute its core are really good. The lore is original and captivating. That said, it has 2 killer problems for me: 1) I don't f***ing understand what I am supposed to do in the game and why, the tutorial suggestions don't really help you learning to play and it's not clear at all how to set up a strategy somehow useful to achieve one of the not-very-well-explained types of victory 2) This looked to me more like a collection of mini tasks than a deep strategy game. There is an insane amount of numerical restrictions that really kill the mood and made me so annoyed... the game dynamics that I faced are a nightmare: I couldn't build that there because there's a very small cap to the number of buildings you can build in a zone, ok then, let's colonize another zone, wait, I need food for that, ok let's produce food, well I need wood for that, then try to collect wood, maybe build another woodcutter, wait, to do that I need more... wood!? The same goes on with a variety of mechanics and honestly it feels like you spend your time trying to overcome the limitations and restrictions the game designers put in the game instead of focusing in appreciating the atmosphere - learning the distinctive traits of your clan and its difference with the others - and thinking about a long term strategic plan for your village.

The Theme is cool, vikings, good voice acting, and the in-game world is lovely. The concept is great, you can achieve victory by various means. You can battle to win, study lore to win, create artifacts to win, or become so popular that you win. Well, there is one really bad part of this game that spoils all the enjoyment. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) is terrible. I mean, really, terribly awful. The enemy will always be some % of your progress, depending on the difficulty you choose. So on easy, you are ahead of the enemy. They will attack you once every year or two. On medium, the enemies are usually ahead of you in most ways. They will attack a couple times a year. On hard, the enemies are always ahead of you and attack your borders 4 times per in-game year. On extreme, they are always ahead of you, and constantly attack your borders. Sounds ok, if the enemy actually suffered any loss. Nope! The AI has infinite, unlimited, instant resources. It automatically spawns a new hero, automatically generates a new military force, and suffers no resource costs. If there is more than 1 AI enemy on a map, they ALL attack you and ONLY you. They never fight each other. They might fight Draugr and Wolves.. but that is just to expand the AI territory. Basically, the AI makes this game so linear, so basic, so simple, that it absolutely loses all flavor. You cannot explore because you must hurry and satisfy the win-con versus the AI. You cannot enjoy a city-builder, because you must build the following buildings; x-y-z in that order, so the AI doesn't ROFLstomp you. There is a single procedure to win. 1) Scouts and Lumber, build houses 2) Expand territory and harvest Food & Stone until you hit an enemy border. 3) Military, Forge, and City Hall upgrade, so you can make your warchief. 4) Trade, Iron, and Fortifications so you can unlock upgrades. 5) Defend zone-by-zone against enemy raiders 6) Rebuild any zones you lose. 7) Wait approximately 1 hour for win conditions to be satisfied (unless conquest, then you mass up troops and go straight for the enemy city hall, skip any skirmishes and border fights, just hit their main base, done. Rinse, repeat for each enemy). Sure, you can sometimes choose that process, based on the map. Maybe you spawn near lots of food and iron, so you can go for military might. Maybe you spawn near a bunch of lore stones, and shoreline so you can do that. Maybe you spawn near lots of stone and monsters so you can go for fame wins. Point is, you really just have a couple minutes to survey your map, make a decision on which of the win-cons you will focus on, then spam spam spam the same boring routine until iWin. There is nothing original about it, the clans have different stats that make some victories more tangible. So if playing hard or extreme, your choice of clan matters. In normal and easy, the choice of clan can be a stabilizing factor for a more chillax experience. But, ultimately, you are still just racing against time to obtain win-con. I don't like 'timed-event' games like this. If I want to take my time doing things, that should be possible, but not in Northgard. You are just being rushed and harried through a messy gameplay to a basic win-con that leaves you feeling flustered, and disinterested. Like, why did I just spend an hour for this? Graphically cute, the concept advertised is not what this game is. It is not a city builder. It is not a sim. It is not RPG. It is not adventure. Once you figure out the process, the win-pocedures, the game is the same experience EVERY time. You just go thru the steps, 1-2-3 win. 1-2-3 win. Unless the AI just randomly decides to win. It can do that, because unlimited resource pool, instant spawns, and spontaneous progress. Bottom line: the AI sucks, and the game is boring because of it. Really boring. The developers really need to change the AI to behave within limits of resources, time, and progress. But instead, the devs are just creating new variations on the theme.. Buy new clan! Spend microtransaction on bad game! No thanks. I bought it on sale, and I regret the purchase. It is not worth $11. I would consider this game to still be under development, and should be Free-to-Play if they are going to also sell so much additional content. I guess the campaign is worth paying through once. That's kinda neat. I really did like the voice acting.

    Jul 19, 2022

It's a cute game with more depth than it lets on, but the core gameplay loop is unfortunately very dull. You also don't get an explanation as to how anything works, the story missions kinda try to do it, but fail miserably. The AI will, regardless of team compositions, always only go against you as the player, never against another AI. You cannot go for a non-military victory when playing PvE. You will not win a non-military victory in PvP due to meta. Defense is basically non-existent, your towers and 'defenders' are worthless, you get no bonus for defending your territory, nothing - you have to meet offense with offense breaking any path that doesn't focus on instantly pushing for max gold gain while maintaining the lowest possible food and wood productions to not have disease wipe you out and then starting the conquest around the end of year 2/beginning of year 3. The story is a bland and boring 'I must revenge dead family member #13' with some 'Norse' mythology slapped on top, but at least you get to experience some different sides of the game due to heavily curated story missions that don't force a domination route. Clans fail to break up this fundamental issue since the goal remains the same, while the path to it is only slightly changed. Overall a 4/10, I'd say? Probably best to wait for a sale or simply stick to Civ VI and save yourself the hassle altogether.

Game used to be fun, but now if you try and play the clans that come with the base game, you will get crushed by dlc clans. They made them wildly more powerful than any of the base game clans to try to get people to buy them, which is really scummy. Don't waste your time unless you're ok with some light pay to win.

I guess this is not a RTS game but we can still control units individually. "Attack Ground" command has been found 25 years ago. Use it. I hate it when my units are moving past the enemies when I right click where they are. Other than that, it's a well crafted, balanced game. I enjoyed playing.

I guess this is not a RTS game but we can still control units individually. "Attack Ground" command has been found 25 years ago. Use it. I hate it when my units are moving past the enemies when I right click where they are. Other than that, it's a well crafted, balanced game. I enjoyed playing.

Haven't played an RTS game in a long time... and there are some interesting mechanics in this game that reduces some of the problems that most RTS games have. Well done!
