The game is simple and mindless, which can be both good and bad. There is literally, only one monster boss that makes anything tougher, the Minotaur. Outside of that one thing, you stomp everything. It's ok to kill an hour mindlessly, but if you are looking for anything more, than this isn't for you. After you have played for an hour or two, you know all there is to offer from the game.

Most of the positive reviews seem to be coming from people who remember playing the free browser version of this game years ago when they were kids. You know what, if Monsters' Den had been available back when I was in school and looking for a way to kill time between classes (or during classes), I probably would have enjoyed it very much, and I would have fond memories of it now. But I never played the browser version of this game and I feel no nostalgia for it. I am evaluating it as a standard RPG/dungeon crawler relative to all of the similar games I have played, and on that basis it comes up short. It is simple and functional but it is completely lacking in style, atmosphere, and storytelling qualities that would make for a compelling gameplay experience. It feels exactly like the simple browser game that it is, and after having spent a few hours on it, I feel like I have seen everything it has to offer, and I cannot find any motivation to continue. If you just want a "coffee break" dungeon crawler that is easy to get into and play for an hour or two, then sure, go ahead and grab this; it's cheap and fairly well made for what it is. But I am looking for something more, and I see no reason to spend time on Monsters' Den when I could be playing Darkest Dungeon (a dungeon crawler that is dripping with style and atmosphere) or Lords of Xulima (which has a similar combat system but is a much deeper game overall).

It's a browser game from the late 90s or 2000s. If you were playing such things then you know what you're in for. Bland, basic, repetitive, but functional. I spent an hour with it before going "oh. right. this is the game." No depth, no updates to the extremely out-of-date UI, very little of anything, really. Just a decades-old browser game ported to Steam with minimal effort to cash in on peoples' memories. It's an old browser game. It's a thing to kill 30 minutes with. It's massively outdated on that front. I wouldn't buy it unless you have a massive nostalgic feel for it.

I can't recommend this one at all. It's almost like a proof of concept for the two that came after and, as such you'd be better off skipping this first instalment and going straight to Chronicles, Godfall, or both.

This game is pretty much identical to the website version, there are very few changes like the menu screen. Some of the text hasn't even been changed like with difficulty selection that still proposes one of the game modes is "new". Overall I would recommend this game if the images interest you even though it is bare bones, however it is quite an enjoyable experience. I am not sure it is worth the $5 price point considering you can still find practically the full game online for free though.

Book of Dread has always been my favorite in the Monster's Den series. So glad that the remastered version was made available to the general public instead of being a Kickstarter only reward. Keep up the good work, can't wait for Godfall! You can find the full game for free on a number of different websites. I personally was happy to spend the $5 to support the developer and play in full screen.

For 5 bucks is a fun little dungeon crawl. Each level gives you the opportunity to raise stats and choose a skill. New more difficult creatures as you go down the rabbit hole. The ability to sell your unwanted gear without going to the vendor is a great addition to the game vs. the free version. I played the game all the time on Kongregate and happily support the dev and their continued contribution to the Monster's Den games. Can't wait for the next one.

Never heard of this game before, so never played the free version. I don't consider $4.50 on sale alot for a game, and developers after all need to eat. Having said that, this is a great game. It reminds me quite a bit of Might and Magic 6-8 without the "pretty" graphics. Will probably be playing this one for a long time to come. Will probably try Godfall when it comes out as well. 9 / 10.

This isn't a bad roguelike dungeon stomper by any stretch, but it's definitely showing its age, and could certainly have used some polish when transferring it from its free-to-play origins (check out Kongregate, for example) to its latest Steam incarnation. The maps are a bit drab - which, when you consider that's what you spend your whole game looking at, is not brilliant. The inventory system is pretty awful - but I do really like the combat, even if it can be a bit tough and prone to the vaguaries of the RNG gods at times. I'd recommend it, but I'd also recommend waiting until it's on special.

If you've ever played a dungeon crawler before, you've already played this. It's nothing special, but I appreciate the simplicity of it and the combat is enjoyable, plus I'm always a sucker for the classic Western CRPG style. The roguelike elements will certainly lend itself well to repeated playthroughs. Ultimately, it's just a relaxing game that I'll certainly sink many hours into. If you're a dungeon junkie you can't go wrong at 5 bucks. Looking forward to achievements and more games from this developer.

I absolutely love this game. Back in highschool when this was a web browser game, I would sign up for computer classes just to play this game secretly in a corner. What I love most about the remastered version of the game is that not a single thing changed. There is so much loot to be had, so many boss fights, and bad ass legendary monsters to hunt. To my knowledge, the game has no end. You can beat the campaign, but it lets you keep playing anyway for the sake of things. It's simple enough to play casually, but challenging enough to make you think. The most fun part is its Diablo 2 skill tree mechanics that you try some really unique parties. Truth be told and all things considered, I do think this game shot itself in the foot of offering the price at $5. It was a free web browser game back in the day. This game is an easy buy for any dungeon crawl or RPG fan at a less price. Seriously, this should be considered a classic in any dungeon crawl gamer's repitoire.

    May 3, 2017

This is another game I first discovered as a browser game on Notdoppler. It's an incredibly fun game. You create a party of up to 4 heroes and enter a dungeon. Once you beat the "final" boss (at level 10) you can then enter an endless dungeon mode, which is exactly what it sounds like: a neverending dungeon generator. "But MetalTreads, if it's a browser game, why wouldn't I just go play it for free there?" you ask. Weeeeell, for one this version is saved to steam, not browser history so you can never lose progress unless you delete it. As well, you can access it from any computer that has steam. For two, you can use custom portraits for your heroes. For three, full screen + good quality graphics = what more do I need to say? For four, it's only $4.99 so even if you don't like it you're not down that much. I love it and highly recommend it to anyone who likes WoW-ish type stuff.

A good deal for a couple hours of dungeon-crawling, loot hoarding, and turn-based combat with some depth to it. Based on the Flash game, but now with fullscreen. Well worth the $5, though the procedurally generated floors can get repetitive-- it's better as something to dip into every now and then.

I first played this game when deployed to Iraq in 2008 off one of our "Morale' folders on our network. I didnt think it was an actual legit game lol, I thought it was just some free demo the govt got for the deployed troops. I had a ton of fun with it and it scratched my video game itch while deployed. Fast forward 8ish years and i randomly stumbled upon it in the steam store and thought "Holy crap THIS game?! No way!" So of course i threw $5 at it and play the hell out of it on and off. Awesomely simplistic dungeon crawler. Great enemy variety, forces you to balance your team and equipment. Great game especially for the price, nothing epic but if you are looking for turnbased rpg you can fire up for 20-30min before dinner/bed without having to devote 3 hrs to get invested/pay attention to a story or to click away at while watching your tv show this is a great pick up.

Imagine if darkest dungeon didn't have all the mindnubing grind, the boring as fuck backtracking, or the bullshit RNG, and the result is Monster's Den: Book of Dread. This is essentially the steam version of the free browser game that's available on multiple sites, so if you want to try it, you can play it there. The game follows the trend of multiple other browser games (Like rebuild and creeper world) of releasing a full game sequel on steam, in this case being Monster's Den: Godfall, which I haven't played yet, and as part of the backer rewards for the kickstarter, this game was included that was also released on steam as well. The gameplay is minimalistic but complex and varied enough to allow you to waste multiple hours without even noticing it and allowing to you even play while doing another task. The base idea is this, you form 4 member party, selecting from 7, and then that party begins delving into multiple dungeons navigating around them, picking up loot, defeating monsters and bosses leveling up every team they reach a new dungeon. Like I mentioned, it's simplistic, but with enough depth to be enjoyable. It operates on a turn based level where party positions mater (Like for example, a cleric with a sword will have to be on the frontline to be able to hit enemies, a thief with a bow can attack from anywhere, and a warrior with a spear can attack from behind his allies, ect ect), melee characters can only attack people around them, ranged characters can attack anyone. People with higher quickness attack first, ect ect. Operating on a mana for abilities and HP for health system. Each class has a plethora of abilities to pick and chose from and multple builds that you can go for. For example, thiefs can be built for poisoning, or striking behind the frontlines, and warriors can be built for defensive support or offensive destruction, you build for 4 stats (endurance, dexterity, intellect and strength, affecting bows, daggers, swords, magic while boosting health, ect). And this is exactly what create the replayability. Nearly every single class synergizes with another class in one way or another. For example, a mage can stun an enemy, and a rogue can instantly execute stunned enemies. A warrior can force enemies to attack them and them alone instead of the rest of the party while a cleric can constitently top them off. There's so many combos and synergies to discover that simply experimenting with various classes and finding all the party combos and strategies and tyring them out is fun on it's own. What little animations exist are very impactful and satisfying, same for the sounds and the artwork is also really high quality and enjoyable to look at. The gameplay while repetive, requires little mental investment to play making it extremely relaxing. It also scratches the minmaxer itch, with your character's stats and strength constantly getting up and your characters constantly getting more powerful without enemies ever becoming overpowered, and since loot is plentyful and you level up normaly as you finish dungeons, and since each dungeon and loot is ALWAYS matched to the level of your characters, there is litterally zero grind. There are two problems however. The game is already available for free on multiple sites, and it costs 5 fucking euro. My recommendation is to go play the online version and if you find this on discount, grab it.

I played the flash version of Monster's Den a lot back in the day, and it was always one of those games that I was surprised was just available as a free online game, considering its scope and quality. I grabbed the Steam version on sale here. To me, it is worth it to buy this game for 3 main reasons: 1. Flash as a platform doesn't always work so well anymore, especially on Linux, but the Steam version of Monster's Den works perfectly via SteamPlay. 2. The ability to play the game in full-screen mode on 1920x1080 screen is a nice touch. 3. This game is so good it was worth money anyway, even when it was first released for free. So I absolutely recommend this game to anyone who likes dungeon-crawling RPGs.
