Fly the legendary P-40E! It was called the Kittyhawk by the Soviets and the British, but the Americans dubbed it the Warhawk. Regardless of the name, the P-40 was the most mass-produced fighter by the US during WWII with many being used by the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease Act.

In the game, you can fly P-40E during any Career mode timeframe - Battle of Moscow, Battle of Stalingrad and Battle of Kuban - and in multiplayer and Quick Mission Builder.

The P-40 puts up a tough fight and is interesting to fly. It's particularly notable for its powerful armament of six .50 cal. machine guns. An enemy fighter won't last long against the P40’s massive firepower.

The P-40's dimensions are much larger when compared to German and Soviet fighter planes. It gives the pilot some extra room and provides for more armored protection for its pilot. However, its size makes it a bigger target. Stay vigilant and check your six often!

Armament: 6 x wing-mounted Browning M2 .50 cal. (12.7mm) machine guns with 235 rounds per gun and a rate of fire of 850 rounds per minute.

Length: 9.05 m (29.7 ft.)

Wingspan: 11.4 m (37.4 ft.)

Wing surface: 21.92 sq. m (71.9 sq. ft.)

Modifications

Removal of two (2) wing-mounted machine guns to reduce total weight (156 kg / 344 lbs. weight savings, minor speed gain)

Additional M2 .50 cal. MG ammo instead of 235 rounds per gun. (312 for inner guns, 291 for middle guns, 240 for outer guns or 615 per gun when equipped with just four guns. ( 207 kg / 456 lbs. weight increase, minor speed loss)

4 x ROS-82 (82 mm) High Explosive unguided rockets. (40 kg / 88 lbs. weight increase, additional drag results in 10-13 kph speed loss)

1 x FAB-250sv (254 kg) General Purpose Bomb. (264 kg / 582 lbs. weight increase with bomb rack, 19 kph / 31 mph speed loss, 7 kph / 11 mph speed loss after drop)

1 x FAB-500M (522 kg) General Purpose Bomb (532 kg / 1173 lbs. weight increase with bomb rack, 36 kph / 22 mph speed loss, 7 kph / 4 mph speed loss after drop)

Operation Features

Engine has no manifold pressure automatic governor. For this reason, manifold pressure not only depends on throttle position, but also from RPM and altitude. This requires additional checking of manifold pressure to not cause engine damage.

Engine has a single stage mechanical supercharger which does not require manual control.

Engine is equipped with an automatic fuel mixture control which maintains optimal mixture if mixture lever is set to Auto Rich (66%25) position. To use automatic mixture leaning to reduce fuel consumption during flight it is necessary to set mixture lever to Auto Lean (33%25) position. In the case of malfunction of the automatic mixture control, the mixture lever should be set to Full Rich (100%25) position. To stop the engine mixture lever should be set to the Cut Off (0%25) position.

Engine RPM has an automatic governor and it is maintained at the required RPM corresponding to the governor control lever position. The governor automatically controls the propeller pitch to maintain the required RPM. Also it is possible to turn off the governor and control propeller pitch manually.

Water and oil radiators shutters are joint with engine cowl outlet shutters and manually operated.

Airplane has a very small stability margin in yaw. When angle of side slip is more than 12° plane becomes unstable in yaw and starts to increase the side slip angle by itself. Because of this, it is necessary to accurately operate the rudder pedals and pay attention to the side slip indicator.

Airplane has trimmers for all flight-controls: pitch, roll and yaw.

Landing flaps have a hydraulic actuator and they can be extended to any angle up to 45°.

Airplane has a tailwheel control system which is unlocked by the rudder if the rudder pedal is pressed more than half of its range. The tailwheel remains locked if pedals are deflected less than half way. Because of this, it is necessary to avoid large rudder pedal inputs when moving at high speed.

Airplane has independent left and right hydraulic wheel brake controls. To apply either brake push the upper part of the rudder pedal.

Airplane is equipped with a parking brake system.

Airplane has three fuel gauges which show the level in each fuel tank.

It is impossible to open or close the canopy at high speed due to strong airflow. The canopy has an emergency release system for bailouts.

Airplane is equipped with a mechanical release system for a single bomb.

When rockets are installed there is a salvo controller, it has three launch modes: single fire, fire two in a salvo or fire four in a salvo.

The gunsight has a sliding sun-filter. There is also a back-up mechanical sight which can be used if main sight is damaged.

The engine timers on this aircraft make it all but unusable in most situations. You have two options 1. Blow your engine 2. Be a slow easy target. Even on Berloga dogfight server this is the only plane where the engine dies before I get shot to bits by the Messerschmitts. Stay away from this one it was a good plane in the war but in this virtual war it is quite bad.

Do you want to experience the plane that coined the phrase "Rage Sucking"? Do you want to saw a person in half with a chainsaw made out of fire? Is your blood pressure too low? Well then, chug 3 Monsters, put on your good aviators and take some Diazepam to for the shakes because we are about to check out the warplane that locks direct eye contact with you at the urinal just establish dominance. P-40E-1 is a fighter plane that decided that speed and maneuverability are dumb nerd stuff for beta males who don't stack 50 cals. In this plane you are effectively a flying fist. Nothing more, nothing less. This is the plane you fly when you look at the rest of the USSR line up and feel disgusted that a nation so well known for its vodka can't seem to build a plane designed for bar fights. This plane is just guns, but don't let that make you think it cant dog fight. Because while it can't out maneuver a 109 in most situation, it can Thanos half the enemy's plane if you so much as sneeze on the trigger. And THAT is the P-40E-1's one trick that doctors hate. You dive in, slap a German's ample posterior hard enough to get the legendary double jiggle, and leave... just leave... You did you job, don't stick around and waste energy. Because you are a 60 year old chain smoker with a bad back. You don't HAVE energy to spare, and if you try to throw hands with the Germans after you have wasted your energy, then I hope you enjoy the soothing ASMR of holes being punched in your fuselage. You fly this plane like boomers debate! Only show up when you have one good attack and quickly leave before someone gives you a reality check, patting yourself on the back in a safe place where no one can judge you for not knowing how a smart phone works. And where is this safe place? UP HIGH! How high? Well how high is your enemy?... yeah, get higher than that. Look, us Americans build things with the intention that we are gonna be THE MOST at something, so today your P-40 is gonna be THE MOST high in the sky because you want to have a monopoly on energy. If ever you see enemy planes above you, don't worry. The P-40E-1 comes equip with a radio that use can use to listen Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd at max volume in an effort to drown out all the wind that is now roaring through all those bullet holes that appeared in your canopy. Lets be real, this thing is a pig. But good god is it charming. I have never had so much fun squeezing the trigger and watching bombers turn into fireballs. And you WILL be the bane of any helpless nerd who picked the HE111 as a career path. The P-40E-1 might not be the best in a dog fight bit it will punish anyone who gets too comfortable and lets you line up a shot. SPEED: Okay MANEUVERING: Okay WEAPONS: You will be the clapper of cheeks BUY IT: Yes

Heavy, slow, underpowered.... And yet, a real mean monster in certain situations. Get a group of them together, and you've got a great chance of spanking your enemy. Very well armed, and it'll take a good beating, making it great for ground and bomber hunting. I love it!

This was the first plane i learned to fly in IL-2 Sturmovik. Yes its not a beginners plane for most, but as i tried to learn other planes i quickly adapted and learned how to utilize it. It was the first plane i had 5 air kills with too. But do not use it for any high altitude dogfights, yes its do-able to shoot a plane down in a high altitude dogfight but its a absolute pain to. It is absolutely amazing in low altitude dogfights, and if you know the plane well its also good in medium altitude dogfights too. But ALWAYS Watch your altitude in it too. Though overall its an great plane.

Not an easy plane to learn and to fly. I don't recommend it for beginners unless you like to play with all the assistance options enabled to make it fly easier. However, if you're more experienced like me and you like to fly hardcore with all the assistance's disabled and you like a challenge, I strongly recommend it. Engine management is key to success with the P-40. Once you learn how to fly it properly, it's very fun to fly and it can become a real force to be reckoned with. It comes with six powerful .50 cal guns, three on each wing and a lot of ammo, more than enough fire power to take out anything you want. It's a beautiful and yet mean looking aircraft in my opinion and it is very well modeled here. Lot's of attention to detail. It's becoming one of my favorite collector planes in the game.

I'm recommending this aircraft because it's interesting, not because it's good. The P40-E1 is not a great plane in comparison with literally any of its contemporaries. It's heavy, it's slow and even though it has .50 cals, they aren't the best available and the dispersion is pretty awful. It's capable as a fighter bomber and ground strafer but in a fight, it's a bucket of frustration that requires constant engine management and it has absolutely zero climb potential. It can't turn fight. And it can't boom and zoom. And that's partially what makes it compelling to fly. You need to REALLY put the work into against 109s. This is one of the first lend-lease aircraft sent to the soviets, and it's largely unremarkable except in endurance and range - where it outclasses any contemporary soviet fighters. E-1 models found extremely limited success, mostly with Australia during the war. Other than that, this plane is actually an absolute joy to land. Its gear is a little slow to drop but it remains stable pretty much all the way to the ground on full flaps and the gear can make pretty hard drops seem a lot softer than they should. It's weight limits skipping and bounces and it has adequately strong toe brakes. For pilots who need fighter landing practice, this is an excellent plane for that.

Just for "collection", the only thing that you'll be able to shot down with this aircraft (instead of yourself) is the Ju-52. It's a flying bait on multiplayer!

If you are looking for a great turnfighter don't buy she is very unique and requires alot of attention one wrong move and you're screwed but if you treat her right she will be wonderful stick to intercepting until you get the hang of her! :)

This warbird cannot turn quickly. This warbird cannot recover from a stall easily. This warbird is a terrible dogfighter. So why am I recommending this warbird? Because the P-40 is the best air-to-ground fighter I have ever seen! This plane can strafe very well! The guns on this warbird are accurate and powerful! The tracers have a predictable pattern that is actually easy to see, so you know where your bullets are going to land. In fact, I only use this warbird for strafing and enemy bomber hunting. In dogfights, however, you are better off trying to outrun the enemy. This bird is beaten in maneuverability by pretty much every other fighter in the game.

This is a fairly fun plane. It is entirely unique to the Russian lineup (if you only have the Steam content and not purchased Kuban yet). However, it is a sluggish beast. Some would argue that this heavy son of a gun should be used more for ground attack however it lacks any optional cannons. I personally prefer to use cannons for ground attacks though you do have bombs and rockets as options as well. With that being said, you get SIX American .50 cals by default which is a heck of a lot of firepower for a cannonless plane. It is fairly easy to take planes out of the sky with this kind of firepower, assuming you can maneuver this hulking beast in position behind an enemy. And when it comes to soft targets? The firepower makes mincemeat of them in no time at all with the added benefit of being able to carry large quantities of ammo!

P-40E-1 You can fly this plane in career mode from Moscow to Kuban. In my opinion its the best fighter what soviets have their air units in Moscow. It can take lot of hits and still keep flying. Its weapons are very destructive and can take down German bombers easily. Not the most agile or fastest one but this plane has its strengths and weaknesses. Engine management needs some time getting familiar with but its not that complicated.

She's an excellent plane once you've read the manual and the pilot notes that come with it in the game. Very stable platform and the 50cals are pretty lethal IF you've set your convergence and you fire at that range. I love it, for PVP, you trim it a little bit, and its hands-off flying most of the way. If you want a aircraft you can climb in and throw around with less reading of the tech specs, you may want to go with one of the Russian planes like the Yak1B or the LA5 series.

First experience in this plane. The cockpit is gorgeous in VR, great view, and it's really spacious inside, as are most of the American planes. I drop the flaps, and throttle up, it perks up quickly, gains speed smoothly without a lot of torque twisting. I just barely get off the ground before the engine explodes. 11/10. This plan is a blast, even if it's not hugely competitive, and it's a lot more sensitive to engine management than others.

Ahh the P-40, certainly a workhorse and beautiful aircraft... though commonly referred to as obsolete and inferior compared to its closest competitors. Is that reputation justified? In a word, yes. The airframe is sound, the weapon loadout is powerful, the maneuverability is adequate, it's well-armored especially for its deployment year... so what's the problem with it? What makes it sub-par? It's the powerplant. The Allison 1710-39 is truly the one factor that puts this aircraft at a severe disadvantage. The power to weight ratio is inadequate, the engine just doesn't pull the heavy airframe hard enough. It bleeds speed incredibly fast in any sort of maneuvering due to the heavy airframe, and acceleration is quite limited. In addition, due to the lack of manifold pressure governer, YOU must monitor the manifold pressure constantly and adjust throttle and RPM to get the most out of the engine without blowing it up. It's a handful to manage in a fight. Mismanage it and it will die quickly... and make no mistake, you will be forced to push its limits in order to not die fighting even an older German fighter like the Bf-109E-7. Running away from a fight is usually a lost cause as well because the 1710-39 cannot be used in emergency power for any more than a few seconds without seizing up. Now, the down-sides being stated, It's not *completely* bad. Given the heavy airframe, the P-40 out-accelerates most opponents of its time frame in a dive. Starting at a higher altitude to the enemy, diving down on them, and killing them quickly with the 6x.50cals is the best way the P-40 "dogfights." She also has decent bombing/attack loadouts available, and is actually great fun in the ground attack role. It's really helpful to think of this aircraft as the "B-40" instead of the P-40... treating it like a bomber provides a much better chance of survival and success in missions. It's under-powered, difficult to manage, and obsolete compared to nearly everything it will fight against in the air. Yet... I love it. It's a challenge, It is just a fun aircraft, and scoring a kill against superior German fighters is a great feeling. tl;dr... only purchase if you want a "Dark Souls" challenge in your flight sim.

  • n8d0g

    Dec 27, 2018

She's an excellent plane once you've read the manual and the pilot notes that come with it in the game. Very stable platform and the 50cals are pretty lethal IF you've set your convergence and you fire at that range. I love it, for PVP, you trim it a little bit, and its hands-off flying most of the way. If you want a aircraft you can climb in and throw around with less reading of the tech specs, you may want to go with one of the Russian planes like the Yak1B or the LA5 series.
  • rhannons_library

First experience in this plane. The cockpit is gorgeous in VR, great view, and it's really spacious inside, as are most of the American planes. I drop the flaps, and throttle up, it perks up quickly, gains speed smoothly without a lot of torque twisting. I just barely get off the ground before the engine explodes. 11/10. This plan is a blast, even if it's not hugely competitive, and it's a lot more sensitive to engine management than others.
