This legendary battle of World War II took place from October 1941 to April 1942. The Battle of Moscow campaign takes place on a large-scale map (270 km x 290 km) (168 mi. x 180 mi.) with Autumn and Winter seasonal terrain. Battle of Moscow comes with eight legendary aircraft which have been painstakingly recreated for you to enjoy flying.

The airfields and flight strips along with their structures have been placed according to historical documents whenever such data was available. We analyzed air reconnaissance photos and personal photographs of the period to determine the typical airfield layout and their unique designs. As it was back then, there are concrete and unpaved landing strips, many being temporary grass strips with no other visible signs other than a little infrastructure and support personnel.

There are five big towns in the area (in addition to Moscow itself which is visible, but overflights are prohibited by order of Marshall Stalin). Cities such as Vyazma, Rzhev, Kalinin, Klin and Serpukhov are all part of the game space and they were made in great detail thanks to the new mapping technology. The cities and towns were created using WWII aerial imagery, so their layouts are correct for 1941.

Eight (8) aircraft recreated from detailed drawings and blueprints: four fighters (I-16 Type 24, Bf-109 E-7, MiG-3 and Bf-109 F-2), two ground attack planes (IL-2 model 1941 and Bf-110 E-2) and two bombers (Pe-2 Series 35 and Ju-88 A-4).

Additional Career mode timeframe covering all phases of the Moscow battle in 1941-1942.

Numerous mission types for fighter, bomber and attack pilots available.

Beautiful landscape, great set of planes and a good simulation. The level os simulations is not that dificult like in DCS World (that I prefer), but what this sim offers to you is fair enough to have some fun on single and multiplayer modes :)

I cant recommend the game. I dont regret the purchase but for the price of a full game you get access to 8 new aircraft, 4 of those are variations on aircraft I already own with BOS, it also allows access to some new scenery but it all looks incredibly similar so far. It is a pleasure to be able to fly the i16 and the Mig3 though.

A lot of fun, the most realistic WW2 flight simulator ever designed. Here's some key issues. You have to buy Battle of Stalingrad first, use the key code from Steam, download 10 GB of data and code, then go onto the IL-2 website and register the same keycode on their site to play the game. If you are using Windows 10 there is one flaw.... a pop-up tells you to use .Net 3.5 so you have to go to Control Panel, Programs and Features, turn on/off.... turn off .Net 4.6 and click/check 3.5 and the two sub folders, run it and ignore the error message that it couldn't be finished, just close it, and open up the game. When you close the game, put your computer in sleep mode or you'll have to do that .Net 3.5 thing again when you open IL-2 (only necessary for Windows 10). Battle of Moscow will require the keycode to be registered for both Steam and IL-2's website, but no download is necessary, the keycode will unlock B of M. For another $10, you can also unlock Days of Autumn (well worth the $10). If you have a metered connection you can play the Sim against the computer in an offline mode, but only about 10 scenarios (one is fabulous-- Friedrich).... another 15 with Days of Autumn (3 are fabulous, Uninvited Guests, The Russians are Coming, A Change of Plans). Some of the scenarios are quick to get into battle, but some are slow to get into a dogfight as you have to realistically fly a long distance (which you can speed up 4X speed (you sit there for 2 to 4 minutes to get into battle), with or without autopilot on). If you go online, even with a slow connection, you can open up 50 more scenarios with choices of about 24 planes flying a variety of scenarios including: intercept, escort, ground targets, bombing runs, etc. and you'll get points, medals, rank in this mode. There is also online Multiplayer, but it requires a fast connection, which I don't have. The planes fly realistically, joysticks can be programmed to use all the buttons they have, paint jobs can be changed, you can fly for Germany or fly for Russia, the Russian planes are pretty good and diverse enough to be fun, the German planes are fabulous. You have to learn how to take off, land, watch your fuel, fly steady enough to aim your guns, keep from stalling in tight turns, conserve ammo, add on cannons, armored windscreens, develop strategies for your dogfights, etc. The graphics are beautiful... you can turn your head with your joystick's hat and look out at your plane's wing with the pretty countryside down below, or fly low over a river. You'll learn a good lesson about war. It doesn't matter how careful you are, how good you can fly, when they're throwing lead at you someday a bullet will have your name on it and your plane will blowup with some beautiful flaming colors.... its just inevitable as thousands of German and Russian pilots found out. The Battle of Kuban, offering some new planes, can also be purchased and you'll get some of the new planes to use in B of S, and B of M, but the full game with scenarios won't be ready until December 2017, according to the makers.

i freakin love this game ,BUT....it is a sim and has a brutal learning curve for those not used to the il2 line, realism is as good as it gets for a ww2 sim but is a bit limited when it comes to aircraft, the models are beautifull and detail is great,i do think it is worth the money and hope they continue to bring new aircraft and theaters to the franchise. i give a 8\10 more aircraft would be a 10\10

To start off: this is one of those games I wish I could make a between recommendation because whether you should buy it or not depends on if it's on sale or not. I will honestly say that the only reason I bought this expansion was for the additional planes. This expansion has some more content, including some more single player content. However, I am mainly a multiplayer pilot and I really wanted to fly the Bf 110. I gotta say...the expansion is not really worth the price. Unless there is a sale (like the Steam Summer Sale that was active when I bought this expansion) the game is too expensive for the content you get. Also, the only plane I really like and use consistently is the 110. The other ones are underwhelming to me. So basically, this expansion is too much money for what you get. I believe it should be less money than the base game. If you like the game and this expansion is on sale, then by all means buy it. Just don't put this too high on your priority list.

Great Expansion for earlier eastern front air war. Expansion gives you access older variants of Bf-109 E7 & F2 models. Also comes with legendary Ju-88 what Luftwaffe used actively to end of WW2. Soviet planes in this time of war were inferior so you need planning and wise decision in air to survive. Comes with well known fighter I-16 and notorious Mig-3 Comes with many other planes as well to keep you entertained like Bf 110E2 what i personally like. Career mode is very long and much air units to choose from. Bought Retail Boxed Stalingrad Release in 2014 i can say simulator has moved big leaps. Being Early Access / Preorder customer before Kuban and after i can say that Sturmovik has become the leader of ww2 simulators.

An amazing simulator game with beautiful graphics. As usual, this flight simulator game requires one to learn many key combinations, but that is how it is with these things. Playing such a beautiful simulator makes me consider of buing some head tracking HW to make it easier to view the airspace around the plane. This game is really worth of all its positive feedback and the money I payed for it.

A great DLC for pilots, both new or experienced. From both sides, you have great aircraft. Just one suggestion... If you have Battle of Stalingrad (I know, stupid sentence), and you want to fly the Ju-88, practice on the He-111. Once you have that down like the back of your hand, flying the Ju-88 is not that much different. Have fun out there, DLMalloy (Oh, and I have 4 weeks worth of play time as of review)

While I'd tend to recommend Kauban over this if you are on a budget, this expansion is still very much worth picking up. The map is largely similar to Stalingrad (to a passive viewer) and the plane selection doesn't have a lot of favorites for me -- it's still part of a fantastic, well crafted flight sim that is among the best flight sim experiences in gaming, as well as one of the best VR experiences overall. It's worth it just for the experience of flying the goofy little I-16 around. Stick or HOTAS is highly recommended.

  • Sharpie

    Jan 6, 2021

A pretty decent package that's worth picking up first if you're looking for something to add on after the base game, especially since you get a bunch of new aircraft you can use in the Stalingrad career as well. As a particular appeal for people that want to do a Soviet career as a fighter pilot that isn't painful, the Mig-3 is surprisingly not as terrible as its reputation might suggest. It's fast, has decent firepower and ammo, can actually climb reasonably well and is fairly stable in a high yo-yo maneuver. Just don't try out-turn a BF109 in it and like me you'll probably enjoy flying it far more than the Yak-1 or Lagg-3. The I-16 is alright, again, its more enjoyable than the Yak/Lagg. If you're curious about flying the P-40 though I'd say pick up that DLC and this because the P-40 career for BoM is pretty decent with few escort missions and the aircraft is pretty fun to learn. There's also another big German bomber in this DLC. Whats not to like?
