About this Content

The Crucible DLC introduces a challenging new arena gameplay mode to the Action RPG Grim Dawn. Enter the Crucible, a harsh battleground filled with waves of Grim Dawn’s deadliest fiends. There you will engage in magnificent combat for the amusement of the Crucible’s mysterious overlord, Lokarr. But he is not a cruel master: endure his trials and be rewarded with vast wealth; fail, and know only his scorn.

Countless combatants have fallen prey to the Crucible’s brutal machinations. Will you survive where others have fallen? Or will the arena’s monstrosities, traps, and dark magic get the best of you?

The Crucible is an alternate game mode available to all Main Campaign characters, starting at level 1.

Key Features

Multiple Arenas – Battle across six deadly arenas (with four additional arenas included with Grim Dawn's expansions) filled with Grim Dawn’s most vicious beasts and monstrosities. Each arena features a different layout with varied defensive positions.

Conquer 150 Unique Waves – Wage tireless battle against 150 unique waves of Grim Dawn’s monster menagerie. The farther you go, the more challenging the combinations become, with the possibility of encountering multiple bosses at once! Progress through the first 100 waves to unlock additional difficulties, which present an even greater challenge but also more reward.

Owners of the Ashes of Malmouth expansion can contend with an additional 20 challenging waves, bringing the total to 170!

Vast Wealth Awaits – The more enemies you defeat, the more treasure and Tributes await you at the end. Cash out your reward and claim your prize, or push farther for even greater wealth; but know that failure also means less treasure.

Earn the Favor of the Celestials – Spend hard-earned Tributes to activate powerful arena-wide buffs which empower you and your allies in battle against the Crucible’s fiends.

Forge Powerful Defenses – Spend Tributes and Iron Bits to bolster the arena with defenses that aid you in battle. Upgrade them for even greater power!

Endure Cruel Mutators – Deadly minions are just the beginning in the Crucible’s arsenal. As you progress through the event, randomized Mutators will become active, amplifying your foes (or you) in one way while weakening them in another.

Personal Leaderboard – Keep track of your performance in the Crucible with a personal leaderboard that stores your scores based upon the monsters defeated, the game difficulty and a score multiplier earned by defeating waves of enemies before the bonus timer expires.

    * I gave a negative review of the game as a whole and played the crucible only a couple of times, mostly after the campaign at level slightly above 50. + you can stop the Crucible encounter after each wave and get rewards or take the risk to get more, which is cool - I was disappointed that that enemies always come in waves - there was no other type of encounter and I was hoping for a constant barrage of monsters to push my build to its limits. Seems like it cannot be achieved in this game. - I played through 100 waves of the first crucible difficulty (required to unlock next difficulty). It was boring work to be honest and took me more than half an hour to finish - the rewards were somewhere between laughable and absurd. Experience gain was nearly non-existent, it feels like you get 10% or less of what you earn when defeating the same enemies during campaign. It should have been the same or better experience at the cost of increased difficulty! Complete disrespect of my time - you only get the loot after you finish the entire ordeal and if I did the campaign instead I would have probably gotten one or two (useless) unique items and one or two minor improvements to my current gear. What did I get here? Absolutely nothing of any value of course - I also got no constellation points, which I would have probably gotten if I played the campaign instead - that's a major way of increasing my power at this point, but even this was missing I tried out the Crucible hoping for a challenge and a big cool loot explosion at the end and I only got offended instead. To be honest it feels like Crucible is balanced as an alternative for late game and if that's correct then these pathetic rewards are something you can expect on average to get very late into the game as well. If so then it's very sad.

For the cost, the Crucible adds another great way to spend your time in Grim Dawn. I'd say that if you enjoy the base game, the "arcadey" Horde Mode on offer here is a great diversion and opportunity at some loot. It's actually quite perfect if you're feeling a bit worn from running the story multiple times, but would still like to engage in some combat for rewards without needing to go on any fetch quests. Verdict: A great add on at a fair price to a great game. Thumbs Up.

A fun way to farm more loot. It also serves as a good way of testing different character builds and gear configurations. Now how about a PVP arena to really spice things up?

Sorry, while I'm a big fan of Grim Dawn, I am just not into the Crucible. Overall, it feels grindy, unexciting, and unrewarding. It is very well made, the monster waves are interesting, I like the mutators, and the various pylons you can construct. I find it incredibly grindy that I have to unlock difficulties on each character separately, as everything dies pretty easily on Aspirant. What's worse, the rewards feel very bland. Tons of Rare items which can be hit or miss. I got one Epic after 100 waves. I know that there's RNG involved as well as that's the easiest difficulty, but I've also received similar results on the higher ones. It's an interesting diversion and it's well-made, but if I wanted to grind between the Campaign mode and this mode, it's hard to pick this one. I thought this would also be a reasonable fount of EXP, like if you wanted an alternative way to level up a character, but even that is very scarce. The descriptions leading up to the release really made it seem like there would be some way to gamble for rewards, but all there is to the "gambling" is whether you want to go to proceed to the next waves or not. I agree that's not incorrect, but with the Tribute currency, it would make an interesting choice of either spending it on defenses to get further or keep them in order to get better rewards. It's not a bad mode, but after a day or two, hard to see yourself coming back to it.

I'm not gonna fellate this DLC for being amazing and innovative and stuff because it's not. It's a horde mode, wave based thing with some neat mechanics and some leaderboards. What I DO appreciate is that it's completely optional from a progression standpoint and is perfectly priced for what it is. It's a level more braindead than Grim Dawn is otherwise and that's not a bad thing. It's perfect for zoning out to while you listen to podcasts or something. The only way it could be better is if it was a free update, but $$$ is a thing devs need. (It says I got it for free, but I didn't. RIP.)

For anyone wanting to know the actual contents of the DLC:

Random from a handful of arenas upon starting up
NPCs & Vendors (Your standard blacksmith, tinkerer, stash, vendor etc and some relating to the crucible)
Monster waves
Break/Rest every 10 waves at the end of a round
Mutators/Passives beneficial and harmful on both yourself and monsters come into play eventually.
Loot when complete or defeated scaling with your progress
A checkpoint system (Requires tributes which scale if used multiple times on the same playthrough)
(Optional) Totems and/or buffs can be activated using tributes gained in the crucible along with a small sum of Iron Bits
Personally I used the crucible as a balancing tool for my characters - it gave me an insight to how classes should be played or how to build a class to do what I want before investing anything major into it. It is what it is and this kinda mode certainly isn't for everyone. The DLC certainly is nothing ground breaking, but it's pretty damn neat for testing builds for new and old characters quick and easy with the steady pace in difficulty.

Grim Dawn Crucible DLC is a solid wave-based horde mode, ideal when you feel like eviscerating swarms of monsters without having to save the world for the nth time. It also is a convenient tool for levelling up characters from scratch. - Great for jumping right into the action and testing builds - The players can "cash out" every 10 waves - Waves 50 and 100 are checkpoints and can be accessed by paying tributes (new Crucible currency granted for finishing waves) - The tribute currency can also be used to buy devotion points (the 50 point cap cannot be exceeded, though), build defences on the arena, and earn celestial blessings - Surviving 100 waves unlocks the next difficulty (starting with Aspirant -> Challenger -> Gladiator) - Finishing the Crucible requires surviving 150 waves - The arena can't be used to farm faction reputation - Like any horde mode, it might be tedious and frustrating at times I highly recommend buying this DLC since it is priced just about right for the content it provides. Crucible Mode DLC in simple terms: Pro: + You can level and improve your character's abilities without playing the campaign. + Same campaign mode Loot, same useful NPC's to your character and opportunity to exchange tributes for devotion points. + Great for those who want to get in the action right away and eliminate so many different monsters in different waves. + An excellent alternative mode for a different experience. Con: - This experience adds nothing to the game. - The arenas may be repetitive in the long run. (Note: But in the end all games may be repetitive in the long run...) Worth 6.50 $? Yes in my opinion. I bought this DLC as it came out and even if I don't play it that often (not because I don't like it, just because I like leveling/farming in the main game more), I really do enjoy it very much. For me, the Crucible is something to start, if I am in the right mood, not something I do to skip the campaign or farm legendaries. But everytime I am in this mood, I'm having a blast! The price for this DLC seems very fair and by no means overpriced. What I do want to add though, is that if you have trouble running the main game and experience stuttering, the Crucible could bring your PC to its knees. There is just so much going on in a tiny arena. The purchase of the DLC doesn't affect the main game and its performance though. You will start it seperatly from the main menu. You don't need it to experience the full story, there are no new classes or other extras, besides the arenas that can give you a different approach to farming/leveling/testing new builds. Long story short: If you like the main game, you should give this addition a try.

If you want to "farm" items thorugh this, DON"T, farming in main story is faster. ( Cronely run / treasure trove run / Nemesis run, etc.) This is for someone who would like to level fast, challenge yourself, and play this new kind of "survial arena mode"
  • VathrielRose

    Nov 10, 2017

A lot of fun to be had in challenging yourself in this arena mode, with waves of enemies coming at you and various defences to set up to help you out. But don't use it as a way to get lots of really good items fast; you're better off just playing through certain parts of the main game.
  • Wingthor

    Nov 30, 2017

"This is so easy, I'll be done in no time. Only 50 waves left" I thought, and during the first 100 waves my character was a killing machine, obliterating everything in his way. Suddenly, some random boss came along an killed him in one hit. I had -25% Aether resistance. Damn. That's pretty much how my first crucible match went down. Grim Dawn's Crucible DLC is a kind of arena survival mode where you have to kill waves of monsters and try to survive as long as possible. Every 10 waves you gain "tributes", which is a currency exclusive to the crucible mode. Tributes can be spent by building turrets or buying buffs to make things a little easier. You can even buy devotion points! Once you die, give up (by telling the crucible overlord you don't want to continue) or complete all 150 waves, the crucible ends and you will be able to grab your reward. The reward consists of several chests that drop tons of loot; the number of chests available and the quality of the loot dropping depends on how many waves you've beaten and how many points you achieved in the crucible. Sure it is fun. However, the rough depiction of my first crucible match points out one of the big problems here. The crucible favors tanky builds with lots resistances and self heal, glass cannons barely stand a chance, especially on the highest difficulty. You definitely shouldn't play the crucible mode with hardcore characters, because it is very likely that you WILL die at some point. This DLC is a great way to farm items and build your character if you don't want to play the main campaign, and it's ideal if you don't have much time to play. It's quite fun and definitely worth the money, but I actually prefer "the real thing", aka the campaign.

While I like Grim Dawn, this DLC needs a bit of reworking to make it really worth buying. The enemies that spawn sometimes do not move towards you and get stuck at their spawn points and you would have to go around hunting for them shaving time off your timer which is quite a hassle and not fun.
  • zwitfire

    May 12, 2018

I'm not sure why everyone is saying this isn't worthy for item farming. This is basically THE end-game content for Grim Dawn. With my fresh level 100 I gained 3 legendaries and 10 blue items on my first run on Aspirant (normal) difficulty after beating wave 150. Beating wave 170+ at Gladiator (Ultimate) difficulty easily grants over 7+ legendaries on completion. If you're leveling and farming up to wave 30 on normal difficulty don't expect insane loot. It's good leveling when you just keep resetting at checkpoints and the loot is incredible for end-game level 100. If you want end-game at Grim Dawn, get this.

This DLC was awesome before, but I almost feel like it's a necessity now that there are difficulty skipping tokens. Grind up in the crucible, skip to ultimate difficulty. Thank you Crate caring about your consumer's time.

It's an arena. It's pretty fun and a good way to get early levels. Only thing I don't like is that the arena is randomized and you can't pick which one you get. Edit: They added an option to pick which of the arenas you wanna play in :)

A lot of fun to be had in challenging yourself in this arena mode, with waves of enemies coming at you and various defences to set up to help you out. But don't use it as a way to get lots of really good items fast; you're better off just playing through certain parts of the main game.
