When first designed in 1947, the Douglas Skyray™ was on the cutting edge of aviation technology. In 1948, Douglas Aircraft™ was contracted to build the F4D-1™, with the first flight of a production model taking place in 1954. Known as the 'ten-minute killer', the aircraft broke five world records in the time-to-altitude category and exceeded Mach 1 in level flight. In 1953, the Skyray™ shared honors with North American's Super Sabre™ in being awarded the prestigious Collier Trophy. In the late 1950s, an F4D1-equipped squadron was recognized as the top interceptor squadron in the North American Air Defense Command, an area previously dominated by Air Force aircraft.

In all, Douglas produced 421 Skyrays, including two XF4D™ prototypes. The last of the type left the El Segundo, California, plant in December, 1958. It was designated the F-6A™ in 1963 and served both Marine and Navy carrier squadrons until early 1964.

I love this plane! I don't think the APR button works correctly since every time I go to line up on the ILS by inputting the correct frequency, and then I push the APR button on the autopilot bar, it turns to 360 degrees instead. Not sure why this is happening but I cannot use the ILS due to this at any airport that might offer this. The autopilot does work fine for everything else, altitude, speed, heading and for flight planning and follow through. Just can't get it to work to line up on an ILS. Any ideas anyone? Great plane to fly otherwise! I still recommend this plane!

If you want to purchase a plane for FSX, review what you like and please do your research on the plane before you buy. I say this because Virtavia makes excellent models, acceptable flight models, and normally interiors that are devoid of high detail modeling. The intricate functions and switches are hidden in 2-D panels. The gauges work, but the texture/modeling on the cockpit is downright bad for a payware product. Overall I wish they put more effort into the cockpit, like all the aircraft Virtavia produces. If you are looking for an exact replication of a F4D, and clickable controls over every switch in the V.C., then this plane is going to dissapoint. If you want a cool looking plane that covers the basics, and you don't care much for complexity, then it will do just fine. Look at A2A simulations if you want all the bells and whistles. Make sure you go into your steamapps files and navigate towards the DLC folder in FSX. Then click readme and go through the manual and such. It helps a lot and will make your experience much more enjoyable. I hope you are famialiar with up/down elevator trim, because this plane varies quite a bit. Overall this is a very fun aircraft to fly, with a high roll rate and good turn radius and exhibits no bad characteristics-I was wishing for some flat spins like this aircraft is famous for. The good news is the flight model is reflected on the J57 instead of the J40-so this aircraft has a high T/W ratio and is a great climber. Overall, worth 10.00
