It's alright and it is more DS3 but only buy it with the season pass or on a good sale, because for a DLC that's worth 1/4 the price of the game, it's got like 1/20 of the content.

I felt compelled to write a review for this DLC as it has mixed reviews and I dont think that's fair. This DLC is incredibly short, yes, but it is very good and definitely worth playing if you like DSouls. The Painted World is beautiful, this DLC has great scenery. Many of the new weapons and armor sets look really nice. The fact there are only 2 bosses, and one is incredibly easy and basically a glorified normal enemy, is a huge shame which I imagine is the main reason for all the negative reviews. In my opinion this DLC is worth it for the final boss alone, one of the best bosses in the series and definitely the best of DS3 (so far at least, I havent played the 2nd DLC yet but the final boss of this DLC is better than 90% of the main game for sure) I would definitely recommend grabbing this on a sale though if you're worried about it being short, it really is £12 for ~2 hours of content (way less if you just rush it I imagine)

When the final boss of this DLC is so much more challenging, frustrating, ridiculous - and yet fun and epic - than the already challenging, fun and epic final boss of the base game, you know there's something special going on here. Ashes of Ariandel is some of my favourite content of the game. Because while somewhat short in its areas, and packing only two bosses, its main boss is so amazing that it truly ignites the passions. I may have had more awe in mastering the final boss of the base game - and shaked and became emotional after beating the Ringed City's most unexpected and intensely sad final boss - but this DLC's boss is one for the ages, and will always stand as a measure of true, fun difficulty for every other FromSoft final boss. The tragedy and sadness that runs throughout this DLC's story struck me more too than most of the game, and despite its beautiful frozen landscapes there's a real sense of loss running through here that's sometimes too obscured in the chaos of both the base game and the Ringed Cities' vistas. Though these areas may not take long to conquer, there's a challenge and weight to them that feels like they surpass some of the more frustrating later areas of the base game, while leading you to a desperate clash at its end. Absolutely required to experience, and perhaps best saved for last.

Extremely short for one of the final two DLC's planned for this game. You think FromSoft would go out with a bang, but instead it comes in the form of a 2 hour DLC. Granted, it is a beautiful environment with some interesting tidbits. However most of the armors and weapons from this are forgettable. Lastly, I absolutely hate the fact I cannot team up with my friends in the PvP arena. Worth the money? No Wait for it to go on sale.

There's a lot of negativity being thrown at this DLC, and with previous Fromsoft DLC like Dark Souls' Artorias of the Abyss and Bloodborne's The Old Hunters, I can understand why. However, the only downside or criticism I see coming up is it's length, which, while true, completely undercuts the content itself. I'm in strong disagreement that length > quality, or that the amount of hours it takes to get through something is more important than how much you enjoyed playing it. Ashes of Ariandel is one of the most fun additions to a Souls game I have ever played. The story, the environments, the enemies, and even the huge chunk of lore it adds to not only the main game, but previous Souls entries, is by far worth $15. The frozen forests of the painted world immediately drew me in and the solid difficulty kept my eyes peeled and my hands ready while not acting as a wall I had to beat my head against to traverse. Just as a Souls game should be. What's more, while not an arsenal, the new armors and weapons added gave me inspiration for new builds and got me playing through the entire game over again twice over with new characters. Even with it's short length, the content is sweet and wonderfully crafted with an immersive new land to explore and story to unravel for the fans of PVE like myself, as well as a perfect new addition to Dark Souls 3, the Hollow Arena, which is a must have for any fans of the PVP. While I understand people's disappointment with the addition's length I feel the wonderfully done content that comes with Ashes of Ariandel more than makes up for it, and that a lot of the negative feeling towards the DLC come from the incredible quality of Artorias of the Abyss and The Old Hunters, but it's important to remember that both of those were the ONLY DLC to be released for the respective games, and that Ashes of Ariandel is the first in two planned additions to Dark souls 3. If you're the kind of person who only cares about length, and the Undead Matches doesn't sell the DLC to you, than pass, because Ashes of Ariandel is far more about quality over quantity, and personally, I wouldn't have it any other way.

I almost didn't buy this DLC because of the sheer amount of negative reviews it received, but I gave in eventually and let me tell you it was very much worth it and taught me an important life lesson. Form your own opinion. The amount of reviews claiming you'll have Ashes of Ariandel 100% complete in ''around 2 hours'' is just insane. Ok, fair enough you might complete it in that length of time if you researched every tiny detail before it was even released, but they have the audacity to blame the developers for making a short DLC when in reality, its their own fault. Going in blind, I felt it had a reasonable length for its price, similar to the length of the Dark Souls 1 DLC, Artorias of the Abyss. Level design is very well done, and again is reminiscent of Artorias of the Abyss from dark souls 1. The whole area is nicely connected and uses shortcuts to its advantage. Aside from level design the new areas look great and as you probably saw from the screenshots bring you into a cold, hostile environment with some of the classic dark souls 'old ruins' thrown in. Overall theres a nice bit of diversity among the areas to keep it fresh. Another complaint I saw among the mass of reviews was the lack of bosses. The DLC has two bosses in total which attracted a lot of negative attention. I agree that one of the bosses is quite lackluster, however the other one is possibly one of the best in the game, as well as being basically 3 boss battles combined into 1. It often got compared to the Dark Souls 2 DLC's which had around 3 bosses each, but people seemed to forget that one of the three bosses in each DLC was basically a reskin of creatures already in the game. Honestly i feel like its a quality over quantity situation this time round. One nitpick I have is on enemy placement. Specifically enemy placement in the crow village. I got the impression they didn't put much thought into it at all. Hiding an enemy around every corner in an attempt to push you off a cliff (for a pretty cheap death I might add) doesnt seem very creative to me and got old fairly quickly. Thankfully that issue in particular seemed confined to this area alone for the most part. Aswell as this, the enemy placement in other areas of the DLC just seemed lazy and rushed in general, and often it felt like I was completing a 'join the dots' puzzle to progress through the area. And that about sums it up. The whole bandwagon of hate thing this DLC got honestly gave me the impression that most of the Dark Souls 3 community doesnt have an individual thought in their head, and that they simply flock from one negative, sorely lacking opinion to another, like flies to shit.

Ok, this needs to stop. These have to be the most unfair user reviews i have ever seen. This is honestly more a 8 out of 10. Yes, it's a bit short. Thats why its a 8 and not a 10. But still, giving these high quality products a negative review for small flaws is just stupid. You can't count on critics reviews nowadays and you sure as hell should not listen to a bunch of 11 year olds reviewing games on steam.

Ashes of ariandel gets builled quite often because it's short. But, The level design is very interesting. It's got quite a bit of verticality in the level design, and the enemies are no joke. It's up to you to decide if this content is worth it to you: ~14 weapons that are all pretty fun and have unique spins on existing weapon types ~4 spells, That are sadly last i checked pretty meh / situational ~2 bosses, One of which being one of the most intense and fun of the entire series in my opinion Now, The length of the DLC is off putting to some. But may i remind you that the current world record speedrun for all bosses (including both DLCs) in ds3 is 1:24:19. Dark souls is very much a game series you play at your own pace. Yes, You can run through ashes with a sunbro in 30 minutes to an hour your first time through. But i personally explored and took my time. So it's worth it in my eyes.

+ An excelent, fun boss fight. + Useable, cool new weapons. + Access to multiplayer arena. - Uninspired level design, most areas are open snowfields with little more than trees in them. - Confusing areas, it's easy to get lost in the unremarkable snow forest or in the generic-looking town. - Only two boss fights, one of which is very underwhelming. - Very short, barely a couple of hours. - Steep price, considering the amount of content. Overall it's very disappointing when comparing it to the quailty of the previous' games DLC packs.
