I bought Brigador yesterday, without the OST, even though i was very curious about the audiobook as well, since it's the first time i see one on Steam. Well, after maybe an hour of play, i knew i had to buy it. I'm not objective about neo-retro ... i was a kid in the 80's early 90's, and back then, the future was awesome. The Lamborghini Countach, Tron, Snake Plissken, Red Neons, Atari, Terminator, Syndicate, Cyborgs, Akira, Pink Neons, Japanese Mechas, Electronic warfare, HAL, GUNMN, Purple Neons, Time travelling DeLorean, PowerGlove, Ninjas, Reebok Pumps ... Well, we all know what became of this vision. It became nostalgia, buried under gray-ish ikea furnitures and white-ish Apple products. Listening to this OST, stuff from future city records, Trevor Something, or even playing Blood Dragon or watching Kung Fury, brings all this back to life, with a vengeance. It brings back the dream of a more dark, but also a much more awesome Future. 10 RAD out of 10.

Sadly i have to amend this review. The audiobook is a fun romp of weapons, warfare and violence. However the author also, after being informed he unknowningly signal-boosted nazi propaganda, didn't care at all that that's what he was doing and insisted it was worth spreading.

A rip roaring, grim military sci fi audiobook of uncompromising military action. An OST composed of an EP and two full albums. All of this clocks in over ten hours of the best damn audio content on Steam. If you love the sounds and lore of Brigador this DLC is a no brainer.

    Feb 18, 2022

Excellent soundtrack. Volume 1 has most of the game's action themes, Volume 2 has more ambient, moody themes that work extremely well with the audiobook, and Uplink is mainly remixes of select songs from volume 1 and 2. They're all great, and buying them in a bundle here will save you quite a bit of money compared to getting them all from the artist's Bandcamp, though you won't get FLAC downloads or unlimited streaming. The audiobook is pure military sci-fi pulp following the perspectives of three characters: the conflicted rookie, discovering the horrors of a total war; the steely officer, leading the unit from their isolated sector to Central; and the cunning traitor, living for the thrill of the hunt. There isn't a too much character development given to each, but just enough to help you understand their motivations and reactions to the absolutely insane sh*t that hits the fan over the 7.5 hours of excellent narration by Ryan Cooper. It doesn't put forward any groundbreaking ideas or fascinating characters, it's just well-written and harrowing action, world flavor, and minor character development set in the brutalist cyberpunk universe of Brigador. But more importantly to those who own the game and are fascinated by the lore, the audiobook does a good job at introducing that delicious lore flavor, such as the history of the planet, the culture of Novo Soloeans and Spacers are like, and what piloting a mech or hovertank actually involves. This whole package was an excellent value, especially on sale, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

It's damn good, the soundtrack is amazing and the audiobook is the finest icing on an already perfect cake. You want a bit more about the lore or want to pity any schmuck stuck in a Mongoose? The audiobook has you covered.

Honestly, I just wanted to support the devs a bit more since I got the game in the Humble Monthly Bundle. I haven't listened to the audiobook yet, but I've been listening to the soundtrack and it is excellent.

    Feb 10, 2022

Overall, the audiobook is great in terms of content, but poorly directed. I cannot recommend the DLC for the audiobook alone. The OST is excellent, and the sound quality is good; unless you are an audiophile seeking lossless OST, the DLC is worth the music alone. The OST is excellent, especially for fans of Retrowave, you get several great albums. However, if you want the OST to be in lossless (FLAC), do not buy this DLC. If you want FLAC, I would recommend heading to the Bandcamp site of Makeup and Vanity Set and buying it there. The MP3 file quality of this edition is still good, this is just for the audiophiles out there. The Audiobook is fairly... unrestricted in terms of indulging in violence, but it's all for ultimate badassery. What I do not at all enjoy is the technical direction of the audiobook. Dividing chapters into separate tracks is fine for most media players, but what is unforgivable for me is how some of the sections of a given chapter are not divided whatsoever. You are in one situation and then suddenly, the entire plot shifts to a different character in a different place without you knowing, causing a lot of confusion. Meanwhile other events in the plot are paced, slowing down for significant events or speeding up for more dynamic, acute settings. This makes me feel like the direction of the audiobook is not entirely thought out and nowhere near professional quality. It seems that all that mattered was the sound quality which, mind you, is fairly stellar, but not perfect, for I find bumps in volume with no apparent relation to storytelling. Will check if it's my player doing that, but I doubt it. Overall, I have mixed feelings about the audiobook.

It's kinda hard to describe Brigador. There's not a whole lot of games out there quite like it. Essentially, you're driving a death machine of your choice (Including mechs, exosuits, tanks, bikes and anti-gravity hover tanks) on an isometric map. While it might look like a twin stick shooter at first, it's much more in-depth. Once the controls have 'clicked' the rest of the game falls into place. You go from slow and stealthy to loud and chaotic. From sneaking up on objectives to smashing your way through the enemy like a sledgehammer with legs. If you love blood splattered neon visuals, incredibly in-depth lore and environmental storytelling and crushing tanks underfoot then you'll love Brigador.

The music is an absolute must. Easily my favorite part of Brigador, not to undercut game at all because it is frikkin amazing. Just got around to reading the audiobook and its quite good. Cold hard brutal mech action. Pretty fun stuff.

    Apr 17, 2022

Worth it for the audio book. It really defines Brigador's world beyond what you see in the game. Although it does make me wish for scenarios in the game where you coordinate w/ friendly units like the squads that the book follows. The music is electronic & synthy, my kind of thing. Though it looks like the album artwork is either messed up or missing, but you can track them down on Makeup and Vanity Set's bandcamp.

This review is for historical purposes. At the time, this DLC cost $9.99USD but provided only the MP3 versions of the tracks (hence the breakdown of the prices for the Bandcamp releases, which would provide the albums in FLAC). Since the conversion from a DLC to Steam Soundtracks, Stellar Jockeys / Makeup and Vanity Set have made the FLAC versions available to all users who own them, at the cost of the the soundtracks now being sold individually and for a higher cost for those who don't own them yet. This was converted to a Steam Soundtrack with the Soundtrack and Audiobook combined prior to the Soundtracks being converted to separate releases shipping with FLAC; downloading it now provides an empty folder. Users are expected to download the separate releases instead now. If I happen to be the reason why it's now more expensive on Steam somehow, sorry. The original review: The Soundtrack and Audiobook are great, but I can't recommend this. Both are provided in MP3 format only. If you want both the FLAC soundtrack, and the audiobook, it will cost you: On Bandcamp: $10USD ($13.24CAD) for Brigador, Vol. I $15USD ($19.87) for Brigador, Vol. II $7USD ($9.27CAD) for Brigador, Up-Armoured EP $Free for Brigador, Uplink EP (unless you want to stream it) $9.99USD ($10.99CAD) for the Audiobook via Steam Or $??USD ($13.24CAD) on Humble (Can't view other currencies) Did I mention that the Humble option doesn't even include Up-Armoured, only Volumes I and II (Or, if it does, it only advertises the "2-hour original soundtrack" which is the first two volumes)? And there is no FLAC version of the audiobook. Someone please explain why I am expected to pay $50CAD to get FLAC versions of the soundtrack and the Audiobook.

Probably the best "Deluxe" type DLC upgrade ever. 4 full albums of awesome music and an almost 8 hour long FANTASTIC audiobook for only $11 CAD? Insanely good deal. Worth noting that the audiobook had some mastering issues when first released, those have all been fixed and the book updated. It sounds great now and has extremely good narration.
