i absolutely love this game. the premise of having 88 heroes, 88 levels, 88 seconds per level and 88 minutes in total to finish the game is brilliant. at first you may think this is really hard to do. but keep at it. i can now do the whole game with atleast 20 or 30 minutes spare at the end. its 1 of my favourite games to just pick up and play, i turn the sound off. put on headphones and spotify. and thats my prefered method to play this game. definately worth it

Hilarious. I feel like this game might have influenced James Gunn's approach to the marketing and opening scene of The Suicide Squad. Despite it being a rather bland "move through the gauntlet" level turnstile type game that sits about 10 tiers beneath the likes of Meatboy, the sheer amount of variety in characters makes up for it. Challenging enough to keep trying yet cheesy enough to know it's place. Worth a purchase if found cheap.

I love this game but it is absolutely terrible. This game has 1 strong element that's seemingly universally agreed on: The characters. The references are funny, their design looks great, and the different moves and gimmicks they have are really fun. There's clearly a lot of creativity and humour on display here in the character design. There are characters who can teleport, go invisible, create platforms for themselves, fly around, stop time, invert your controls. destroy the level and make new pathways. I specifically remember a hero called "El Delayo" who literally delayed all of my keyboard inputs and played like I was lagging. It was weird to get used to and a tad frustrating but overall it made the character memorable and unique. Sadly, this game lacks anything other than unique heroes. In fact, "88 heroes" is probably one of the most accurate video game titles ever. Because that's all this game is. You would have the same fun with these characters that you would in a random blank scene in unity fighting generic red sqaures. This isn't so much a game as it is 88 video game characters being prototyped. The level design in this game is straight up worse than most flash games out there. It truly is awful. I would be willing to accept the fact that the levels look ugly as sin if they played well but they don't. Problem 1) Enemies are all useless and never require any thoughtful use of the characters. Remember all those cool powers I mentioned? Most of them aren't relevant. Enemies all have 1 HP and do infinite damage, so you either oneshot them with your characters' attack (if they have one) or you mess up and die to them. This is the equivalent to booting up smash bros ultimate, seeing that you have 70+ characters to choose from and only being able to ever fight the training mode sandbag. Problem 2) The hazards are awful in this game. I've played this game for a good while now and got a feel for all the traps. I can avoid them. That doesn't make the way they are implemented any less frustrating. Lazer traps are "on" for far too long and, like everything in this game, oneshot you. I don't understand this decision, as it further annoys players and makes things like misalinged hittboxes (paticularly on spikes) stick out REALLY hard. Shooting or "zapping" traps don't have an "im about to shoot" telegraph. Combine that with their large offensive phase and you'll end up in a situation where it takes you 3 or 4 characters to just drop down a hole 2 feet tall unless you time it perfectly. These two problems combine to make levels that are just straight up bad. And I do genuinely mean bad. These levels aren't just mediocre. They suck. I'm going to confidently say that I don't believe for a second that all 88 levels were playtested for any length of time other than to see that they don't literally crash the game on loading. The only fun part about playing the levels was occasionally breaking them by teleporting to the exit or breaking your way there. What's sad is that someone clearly tried to make these levels good. There are alternate paths that can be taken under certain circumstances (sometimes), and coins to collect are placed in spots to dare the player to get close to traps. However, even systems like these don't properly work. The alternate paths are alternate but just as boring, and they themselves are few and far between in the first lace. And the coins system requires a player to spend 88 coins to revive a fallen hero-something that takes you putting your current hero in danger 11 times in a row. I don't think I need to explain why that isn't a good design choice. Now for a quickfire of things that are annoying but aren't as annoying as what I've mentioned: The boss sucks. It's really really really really really boring. And you fight him multiple times in the same linear and boring way. The game doesn't take up the full screen. Instead, you see the game through the villains CCTV camera. This looks awful. This also means that characters in the villains lair can literally get up and walk in front of the screen. I rarely curse, but seriously, what the actual fuck. Someone had to create assets and program in a feature of someone occasionally blocking your view. Do you enjoy it when someone stands in front of the TV? No, but you're getting that anyway for some reason. The time limit is incredibly pointless and is something no one will enjoy. I can see liking 88 seconds per level, but the devs clearly did not understand the implications of what an 88 minute timer means. It means that someone can literally play up until level 87 with no deaths and fail by a second and they will have literally wasted almost an hour and a half of their life accomplishing nothing. In a game that forces you to be precise when dealing with traps, this is a joke. I would have liked to see what this game would be like with no stupid screen stuff, 10-20 well designed levels, 1 boss fight and no time limit. I truly believe that (especially at this price tag) the game would have had the potential to be incredibly popular. I understand this review may come off as overly harsh and I expect that this game is made by devs simply beginning their journey. Despite my criticism, there ARE good parts to this game. That is why I like it and will probably keep playing it. Despite that, I cannot recommend this game. Is it worth the price? I paid 3 pounds for it on sale, so me for it probably is. It's currently 13 when not on sale though. I wouldn't pick this up for anything above a fiver. 88 heroes is, without a doubt, the best worst game I have ever played.

88 Heroes to play with...88 Seconds to reach the end of the level...88 Levels... 88 Heroes is a classic, silly platformer and (for me) an instant addiction. £12.99 for this - you’d really be doing yourself a disservice if you’re a platforming fan and don’t grab a copy now!
88 Heroes is the hipster love-child of Broforce and Rogue Legacy!
88 Heroes is a game I really wanted to love but ultimately began to hate. I was looking forward to it, the concept isn't unique but the characters are but the game being nothing more than a fair gimmick and after about an hour and a half worth of gameplay, I decided to refund the game as I was disappointed above anything else. I'll start with the things that I loved: -The characters of this game and the variety that they come in are the star. The animations for the characters themselves, the one-liners, the abilities, really make their personalities come alive. Alot of them - well most of them are references to pop-culture (movie and other games). -Voice acting is actually pretty great, each character sounds set apart and none of them sound similar. -The controls are tight, very responsive and tuned for the Xbox 360 controller. It's so precise and reacts to every little touch. -The art style (for the playable characters) is very reminiscent of 90's Sega Genesis games. Very faithful and nice to look at. -Puns, puns and more puns. Parodies and references aboard, if you're not down for that then you probably won't enjoy this game or what it brings to the table. -The sound is decent, the soundtrack isn't great but isn't bad either. Now we'll look at the bad: -Weak enemy variety. Seeing how you're always playing as another character, ot gets boring seeing the same enemies over and over again. Alot of love went into the playable characters and no love went into the npc's. -Animations for the npc's are sub-par. I love that all 88 Heroes have their own unique abilities (well most) and animations but those things do not reflect off of the npc's and that's sad to realize. -The poorest made bosses ever. I understand that the bosses have to accessible for ANY character to beat but holy crap, it seems like the devs were lazy while coming up with them. -No real depth or sense of progression. Unlike something like Rogue-Legacy you really don't have anything to look forward to. When you beat the game, it unlocks solo (1 hero mode) and 8 hero mode but that's hardly rewarding, especially since you already know what the surprise is. -The art style for the npc's and the levels is totally det apart from the art-style of the playable characters. They feel boring while the heroes feel fun. -Getting squashed by the ceiling isn't a challenge, it's annoying. Since this is a one hit death kinda game, it becomes a burden to be precise in an unnecessary way. -Vast majority of characters feel stunted because they cannot attack in the air - even ones that should! -I wish I could say that none of the characters are clones but I consider at least 8 to be clones. 4 Teenage Mutant Armadillo brothers and the pixel people that can't do anything but run. -Invoking useless playable characters purposely. I think this just destroyed the balance of the game, mainly because you have 3 types of characters: The strong, the average and the completey useless ones which don't have any abilities at all and can't attack. Only run. -No video options. Regretfully there are no video options. Would have been cool if the game had some filters or other types of things to give it some extra visual flair - especially since you can play as just one character later. I don't hate the game, I just don't think it's worth the $15.00 for what it is. I don't reckon that this is as polished or executed as great as it could have been. I really loved Super House Of Dead Ninjas which is by the same folks but I think that this title is one to get at discounted price. Perhaps $7.49 would be fair for it. Yes. It's a lovechild of Rogue-Legacy and Broforce but not as satisfying as either... at least not at full price. That's my review and those are the reasons why I refunded. With phenomenal titles like Hollow Knight for the same price, there is NO excuse for devs to get lazy in design. I'll buy the game again later but only when it's on a discounted sale price.

An extremely fun game, all of the heroes are unique and interesting, fun and silly. The random aspect of keeps the game fresh and fun. It reminds me alot of an old Genesis game called Kid Chameleon, but with way more heroes. Also has a very enjoyable sense of humor and fun tone to it. very awesome game.

88 Heroes isn't just some generic retro-styled game - it positively reeks of the aesthetic of 80's and 90's British computer games. Computer gaming was a far more powerful force in the UK back in the late 80's and early 90's than it \was in the US. And computer games were more open to experimentation than console games. Open worlds and excellent soundtracks abounded in those days. Speaking of which, this game's unique concept also elevates it above genericness. It's crazy challenging, even on the main mode, but that's just how things were back then. It's definitely worth $15.

88 Heroes is one of the worst and most disapointing games I have played on steam. As a retro fantatic the premise of this game looked amazing, retro platformer with tons of playable characters, and jam packed with humorous references to 80's and 90's. I was stoked when I stumbled on this game and skipped every other game in my backlog to play it. Unfortunately the end result is nowhere near as cool as it all looked. First the good, the humor and references in this game are fantastic. Just about every new hero made me chuckle a little bit as I read their bio. There are references to old atari games like a female version of pitfall harry complete with atari jump sound, old nes games like Lou the plumber who attacks by butt stomping, old cartoons like the armadillo brothers who fight with different weapons such as a bo staff, sais etc, and old movies like gronan who makes arnold like groans as he meanders through the levels. Those just scratch the surface of the references in this game, they are all well done, complete with humorous animations, sound effects, and comedic bios. Unfortunately, just about every other aspect of this game was terrible: 1) The screen is too small, the game has the gimmick of the main bad guy watching you through his monitor from his headquarters. As a result a good portion of the screen is the border of his screen and him sitting in his chair. This makes the actual play area way too small, you can hold a trigger to look around the level, and you will need to do this constantly to see whats coming next. This just takes away from the action and makes progressing very tedious as you are constantly stopping to see what is coming next. Another annoying thing about the view of this game is the fact that random henchman will come walking by and when they do it further obstructs the screen. Did you have fun when you were young and your parents/siblings would randomnly walk in front of the tv? Neither did I, but somehow the developer though to include random robots walking by and obstructing your view. 2) there are 88 playable characters, each time you die a new hero is randomnly given to you, similar to how rogue legacy works. However, this system is implemented incredibly poorly. First off, at least half, if not more of the heroes are completely useless. Many of them have no attack at all, and some of them handicap you in someway(example, a panda on a unicycle named wrong wei who has no attacks and all controls are reversed). When a hero dies, they stay dead, which is terrible because you never really get a chance to play around with or experiment with each hero. Sometimes you will die before you even get a chance to see what the hero does. For example, there is a hero who is a robocop spoof and attacks with a rocket. I pressed attack to see what he did, he shot a rocket, I was next to a wall, so the rocket killed me and I never got to play with him again, how could I have possibly known that would happen? 3) This leads to the game terrible difficulty. I love hard games, this game is hard for all the wrong reasons. Besides the terrible level design, which is mostly really easy, but will kill you for things you could not see, and slippery controls, you also have to contend with the terrible hero choice. You have 88 lives in this game, but at least half of them you are forced to play with unplayable characters who are sure fire deaths, I wouldn't mind the comedy aspect of it, but when all of your lives are done the game is over and you are back to level 1. This is a fairly lengthy game (88 levels total) so being put back to the beginning of the game will suck all desire you have to play the game completely out of you. 4) The time limit makes no sense, you have 88 seconds to beat each level, you also have 88 minutes to complete the whole game. You don't need to be a math genius to see what doesn't add up. If you take 87 seconds to beat each level you will run out of time and be forced to start the whole game over. I think most gamers as a whole hate time limits, but if you must have one at least make it a level to level thing. Who wants to go through a game only to realize, after playing for 88 minutes, that you are forced to restart and re-do all 88 minutes. 5) The boss battles in the game are terribly boring, every 22 levels you fight a boss, but because the developer decided to make half the heros useless they had to be designed in a way that any hero could beat the boss. As a result they are all the same, a rocket in the middle, you jump on a button to fire a rocket at the boss, rinse and repeat until dead. The best word to describe this game is tedious, it has so many good ideas, but they are all implemented so poorly that it just makes you not want to play. With a few tweaks this game might be decent, but as it is this is one of the most poorly executed games I have ever had the displeasure of playing and should be avoided at all costs.

Unfortunately I should put a much negative review than I want to for this Game as it is enjoyable only for the variety of Characters so NOT for his story (bare to the bones: Big bad Alien try to make quick cash taking hostage the world and mistfists heroes try to stop him. THE END no more is given to you than that so DON'T expect: cutscenes, characters dialogue with the villain, epic ending (more a "roll the credits") and things like that) and NOT for his levels (with no story the game leave you to a bunch of levels to beat and there is 88 of them, they're not randomized and you will learn to know them quickly. The first 20 something levels are fun then little by little you can see the enemies don't change much, expecially in last levels and can also see that devs put too much effort in making levels crazy unbeatable than fun (so no cool strategy to devise only a lot of luck and repeating), ideal for masochists or people who like to try,try and try levels until they beat them (pretty much like the people who play slot machines). And as someone else in these reviews pointed out Boss battles are the same for each of the 4 worlds only made the Life bar a little bit longer so the classic saying: " if you see it once you see it all" it's valid here. This are from my perspective the bad points that make this game a little bit more of a chore to play than fun. Now let's see the good part: The characters 88 Heroes is a fun brigade to know most of them useless and in there just as spoof of much more iconic heroes or to die in a spectacular explosion of pixels .You can see the developers put much more work on them than the rest of the game as each got a set of moves specific for each characters (so different in-game mechanics to use) a good brief backstory for each to give you an idea where they come from and unique voices (that make you like them more or less). They are funny, easy to get and the player will love to reuse them to try all their "quirks". Do you need 88 levels for that? the answer is No. Do they die easily? let's just say is based on how good you are with each character but even the best player couldn't complete all the levels with Mr. Colossus (too big to pass some points) or the Mucus guy (bounce everywhere and good luck passing through the skulls with the sunglasses). So the bad thing is before "retry" a character you have to collect 88 coins this to revive them and let me say there is a lot less coin around than what's really needed. Now where are we in all this? aside controlling the heroes Our perspective in-game is from the back of a monitor of the Big bad H88 this Alien guy who to be honest is also a well made character but a little repetitive in his behavior as he will in rotation comment on heroes death/winning the level: saying it's stupid or dumb, shoot manservant robot head, scream at the screen: without taking count of wich hero is on it and if you leave for a bathroom break, the villain will also go for a "pause". But in the end is fun to have around and you could tell his perspective and generic opinion on the heroes performance will be pretty much your own (slap my face each time I see them fail). The question you should ask yourself is: Is worth buy this game for 15$ only for the characters? My answer is: Meh I already throw away my money blindly for this game just because I love superheroes so retry a level every once in a while for a hour or two will be fine and hopefully (in my dreams XD) developers will come out with more content (dlc, stories/objectives sections, etc.) that will make my purchase get more meaning. If you want to help developers (who could give us some more in deep good games in the next future) and don't mind waste money [:'( *sniff* go for it. Do I reccomend other people to spend this kind of money for it: No. Go easy on this and read what you get for. Then If you still don't care. Do what you want ;-)

I don't think that I will absolutely ever beat this game, but I don't think that is really the point. Featuring 88 playable characters, each with their own personality and controls, this game feels less like a practicable, technical platformer and more like a grab-bag party game like Mario Party. The strong-suit of this game is rarely the levels or the bosses or what most platformers often shine through, and instead in the overpoweringly awesome aesthetic. This aesthetic, if you are in it for the journey and are as excited as I am to try to overcome the challenges with each new control scheme and character, is a propelling force towards making this game fun. Certainly not a flawless game, but for those looking to take a few shots in a difficult, adaptation-based platformer (as opposed to practice and muscle memory), this is a very unique and worthy choice. With its faults, I'd give this one a fair 6 or 7/10.

I mean its kind of fun to see all the references of the heroes. This is the best part of the game. The main-gameplay isnt that fun and some things are more annoying than fun to me. Some design decisions try to make this game challenging but for me this is more some kind of broforce fun-game with fun characters that are sometimes more useless than helpful and you just die by finding out their attack button. The levels are just boring designed so its not really motivating to beat them. Because of the small screen you sometimes dont see whats coming and can be trial and error moments which are just annoying to lose a hero you like in this moment and maybe never see him again. I think this game would have been a good game if it would concentrate more on this fun part like bro-force did and not trying to build a big challenge around it that makes you repeat everything all over again if you fail. A normal level system like in other jump and runs would have been more fun.

I'm so glad I found this gem of a game! It's very retro-ish, and parodies Mario, Ninja Turtles, Portal, a TON of movies, and some other funny little things. It's really entertaining in a silly sort of way, and a little agonizing when you get a character that doesn't work well in a specific level. Pros:

Each character really does have their own personality and play style
The retro throwbacks and parodies are wonderful!
Good Platformer
Good Performance and entertainment value
Cons:

Some characters will die quick (because of the level) and you'll be sad that you didn't really have had enough time to enjoy them...(but that's life, right?)
Batman's Batbot is a little OP with its pausing of time, but that might be the only thing that helps you get through a level or two
When you start the game for the first time and play the tutorial, you'll only have one unlocked...playing the tutorial doesn't unlock the characters, so you'll play the same level over and over with the same character until you quit manually. It's a loop you don't want to start without knowing this fact.
This really is worth picking up and playing, especially if you were born before...say, 1990 or so. A+ Game

Comedic rage platformer. Some of the heroes are useless and only exist to be cannon fodder. You have 3 different game modes unlockable by playing which are essentially normal with all 88 heroes aka 88 lives, hard which your selection of 8 heroes aka 8 lives, and survival which is 1 hero aka 1 life. You can gather coins and after gaining so many you can resurrect a dead hero aka get an extra life. Coins are everywhere and half are easy to get with half being hidden for specific heroes. Everything is destructible, environment and enemies alike. If you like softer rage games then this is good, though there will be raging. Lots of dying in this. Nothing incredibly hard and great for casual gamers. Goes on sale for pretty cheap.

A very soft thumbs-up on this one, if only because (as many other steam reviews throughout history have pointed out), there's never been any options for reviews outside of a binary thumbs up or down. The framing device of the villain hammering away at the keys made this a standout title when I first saw it at MCM Expo, and it can be enjoyable to give another run a go. But as far as "quirky platformers with a varied cast of wacky characters that the player is forced to use at random" go, this one goes a bit too far on the quirkiness aspect, with some of them toeing way too close to the line between "you have to overcome this limitation" and "makes certain parts of the game entirely unplayable". Not a bad option if that's what you're after, but if you want this style of gameplay done better, stick with

    Broforce

i absolutely love this game. the premise of having 88 heroes, 88 levels, 88 seconds per level and 88 minutes in total to finish the game is brilliant. at first you may think this is really hard to do. but keep at it. i can now do the whole game with atleast 20 or 30 minutes spare at the end. its 1 of my favourite games to just pick up and play, i turn the sound off. put on headphones and spotify. and thats my prefered method to play this game. definately worth it

    Broforce
